This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meïr Aaron Goldschmidt and the Poetics of Jewish Fiction presents a bold new reading of one of Denmark’s greatest writers of the nineteenth century, situating him, first and foremost, as a Jewish artist. Offering an alternative to the nationalistic discourse so prevalent in the scholarship, Gurley examines Goldschmidt’s relationship to the Hebrew Bible and later rabbinical traditions, such as the Talmud and the Midrash. At the same time, he shows that Goldschmidt’s midrashic style in a secular context predates certain narrative movements within Modern-ism that are usually associated with the twentieth century and especially Czech writer Franz Kafka. Goldschmidt was remarkable in his era, both as a writer who explored his peripheral identity in the mainstream of European culture and as a writer of the first truly Jewish bildungsroman. In this groundbreaking study of Goldschmidt’s narrative art, Gurley refashions his position in both the Danish and Jewish literary canons and introduces his extraordinary work to a wider, non-Scandinavian audience.

This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 16 include: . excerpts from Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire . poems BY Richard Watson Gilder . scenes from Faust by Goethe . the writings of Nikolai Vasilievitch Gogol . excerpts from Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield . selections from Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs . the elegies and odes of Thomas Gray . and much, much more.

Download or read book Nineteenth-Century Jewish Literature written by Jonathan M. Hess and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scholarship has brought to light the existence of a dynamic world of specifically Jewish forms of literature in the nineteenth century—fiction by Jews, about Jews, and often designed largely for Jews. This volume makes this material accessible to English speakers for the first time, offering a selection of Jewish fiction from France, Great Britain, and the German-speaking world. The stories are remarkably varied, ranging from historical fiction to sentimental romance, to social satire, but they all engage with key dilemmas including assimilation, national allegiance, and the position of women. Offering unique insights into the hopes and fears of Jews experiencing the dramatic impact of modernity, the literature collected in this book will provide compelling reading for all those interested in modern Jewish history and culture, whether general readers, students, or scholars.

Book Synopsis A Measure of Memory by : Victoria Aarons
Download or read book A Measure of Memory written by Victoria Aarons and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Measure of Memory explores the importance of storytelling in articulating the vicissitudes of individual and communal identity in twentieth-century American Jewish fiction. Focusing primarily on the short story and on major figures such as Sholom Aleichem, Delmore Schwartz, Philip Roth, Bernard Malamud, J. D. Salinger, and Art Spiegelman, Victoria Aarons examines the characteristically self-reflexive narratives of Jewish literature, ranging from Hebrew scripture, the Jewish Enlightenment, and Yiddish literature to the postmodernism of Grace Paley and the feminism of Lynne Sharon Schwartz, Francine Prose, and Leslea Newman. Aarons demonstrates how, in telling their personal histories, characters in American Jewish fiction bear witness to the survival - if only in memory - of a community. Their stories speak to a shared defeat and achievement and thus to a shared but evolving cultural ethos.
