Book excerpt: True devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus moves us to ponder the unrelenting love of Jesus, fully human and fully divine, as He poured Himself out for the world. In these pages, Fr. Thomas Dailey transports you beyond the prayers and liturgies and helps you to contemplate the Sacred Heart, which Pope Benedict XVI said “has irreplaceable importance.” Fr. Dailey shows you how to experience the way of prayer that formed St. Margaret Mary — the visionary to whom the devotion was revealed — in the religious order founded by St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal. Fr. Dailey's brilliant combination of Salesian spirituality and meditative devotion will enable you to respond to Christ's “divine affection” and experience God's love as never before. Through a series of nine reflections on the Sacred Heart, Fr. Dailey will show you:

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider this meditation: DEVOTION to the Sacred Heart consists in honoring, with a worship of adoration, love, gratitude, imitation, and reparation, the heart of Jesus, which, united hypostatically to the vVord, is the heart of God, the source and fulness of graces, the perfect model of all virtues; and whose goodness, greatness, amiability, and generosity are alas! unrecognized on the part of men. This devotion, like that of the words of the cross, the sacred lance, the crown of thorns, and a multitude of others, has a double object: the one sensible and material, able to be perceived by the senses, or represented by the imagination; the other wholly spiritual, but having the closest relations with it. The sensible object is that heart, which living and animated was the organ of the feelings of our divine Savior, and which reminds us of them, as being their most direct, truest, and most expressive symbol. The spiritual object 'consists in those very feelings, the interior dispositions of Jesus Christ! his love for his Father, his love and tenderness for men, his joy, his sorrows, his wishes. . . . . . . The Blessed Margaret Mary gives us to understand and distinguish. this double object, when she says: " The divine Master assured me that he felt singular pleasure in seeing the sentiments and love of his heart honored under the emblem of a heart of flesh, as he had shown me." The Church speaks in the same way in her office, where we read: "The Sovereign Pontiff, Clement XIII, has authorised the feast of the Sacred Heart, so that the faithful may, under that symbol, celebrate with more devotion and fervor, the charity of Jesus Christ suffering and dying for the salvation of the human race, and instituting, in memory of his death, the sacrament of his body and his blood. While giving glory to the Sacred Heart of Jesus we celebrate the memory of the principal favors of his love towards us." Let us admire here the simplicity and fitness of the means Jesus Christ has wished to make choice of. The heart is in fact the most natural emblem of love, goodness, and whatever there is of great, generous, and heroic in the soul: moreover, it receives the impression of all the feelings we experience. 'What Christian, then, could by meditation place himself in presence of the heart of Jesus Christ without recalling the sentiments of charity, tenderness, and compassion, with which that divine Savior was filled. "The heart of Jesus," says Pere Gautrelet, "represents, and reminds us of the sacred humanity, whose noblest organ it was, and the divine pardon which penetrated it, raised it to the dignity of a divine heart, and imprinted the seal of divinity on all its movements and sentiments; the honor paid to Jesus Christ can be formalised in that we pay to his adorable heart." The end of devotion to the Sacred Heart, is to acknowledge, in a worthy manner, the love of Jesus for us; it is therefore to imitate the virtues of which he gives us an example to repair the crimes and ingratitude of men towards him, particularly in the adorable Eucharist. What Christian would not strive to realize that sublime end! Ah! how can we think of the wonders and the excess of the charity of the Son of God; how can we recall to mind that that love was the cause of the humiliations of his Incarnation, the labors of his life, the gift which he has given us of himself in his sacrament, the sacrifice he consummated on Calvary, and not be drawn to love him with the greatest love! All that is brought before us by devotion to the Sacred Heart. Therefore, whoever embraces its spirit and practice, cannot but share the sentiments of St. Liguori who exclaimed: " O all amiable heart of my Jesus, ' heart worthy to possess all hearts, heart resplendent with the flames of the purest love! O consuming fire, consume all my being, and give me a new life, a life of grace, a life of love." ....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book of meditations, based on a series of meditations by the author shortly before he became Archbishop of Munich-Freising, in 1977, theologian Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) presents his profound thoughts on the nature and person of God, building a bridge between theology and spirituality as he makes wide use of the Sacred Scriptures to reveal the beauty and mystery of who God is. He writes about each of the three persons in the Holy Trinity, showing the different attributes of each person, and that "God is three and God is one." God is - and the Christian faith adds: God is as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three and one. This is the very heart of Christianity, but it is so often shrouded in a silence born of perplexity. Has the Church perhaps gone one step too far here? Ought we not rather leave something so great and inaccessible as God in his inaccessibility? Can something like the Trinity have any real meaning for us? It is certainly true that the proposition that "God is three and God is one" is and remains the expression of his otherness, which is infinitely greater than us and transcends all our thinking and our existence. But, as Joseph Ratzinger shows, if this proposition meant nothing to us, it would not have been revealed! And it could be clothed in human language only because it had already penetrated human thinking and living to some extent. "Without Jesus, we do not know what 'Father' truly is. This becomes visible in his prayer, which is the foundation of his being. A Jesus who was not continuously absorbed in the Father, and was not in continuous intimate communication with him, would be a completely different being from the Jesus of the Bible, the real Jesus of history... In Jesus' prayer, the Father becomes visible and Jesus makes himself known as the Son. The unity which this reveals is the Trinity. Accordingly, becoming a Christian means sharing in Jesus' prayer, entering into the model provided by his life, i.e. the model of prayer. Becoming a Christian means saying 'Father' with Jesus.” — Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI)

Book excerpt: In A Heart on Fire: Rediscovering Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Rev. James Kubicki, SJ, presents a persuasive and engaging guide to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an age-old and often misunderstood Catholic devotion. He delves into the rich theological and spiritual roots of the devotion and demonstrates how the faithful may encounter the Sacred Heart of Jesus in one another, scripture, the sacraments, and especially in the Eucharist. Fr. Kubicki, former national director of the Apostleship of Prayer (now the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network), brings to life the rich imagery associated with the devotion’s history and provides a contemporary look at traditional devotions like the Twelve Promises, family consecration and enthronement, the Sacred Heart Badge, the Litany of the Sacred Heart, holy hours, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

He is very much a contemporary man; a witness to the atomic age with all its possibilities of achievement and progress; an eye-witness in Japan to part of its record of awesome destructiveness. In 1942 Fr Arrupe became Rector at the Jesuit house at Hiroshima and he was able to use his earlier medical training when the atom bomb fell on the city in August 1945. He was elected twenty-eighth General of the Society of Jesus in May 1965 and was the first Basque since St Ignatius Loyola to hold that ofice.

Book excerpt: This new edition of Prayer of the Heart brings back into print a pioneering work that sold almost 70,000 copies in its first edition. George Maloney, S.J. (1924-2005), a leading exponent of the Eastern Christian spiritual tradition in the decades after Vatican II, opens up the Eastern Christian tradition of prayer--in particular the Jesus Prayer--to Western Christians in a clear and practical manner. Unmatched as a readable and comprehensive guide to Eastern spirituality during its fifteen-year history of publication, it fills a void in the spirituality market for today's readers as well.
