Mandukya Upanishad, though the shortest of all Upanishads, is a revered, profound Upnaishad that teaches us about four states of consciousness: the waking, dreaming and sleeping states and Turiya, the fourth state, beyond the first three. In this Upanishad, there is a unique combination of psychology and profound philosophy, a clear exposition of the four states of consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a common misconception that a spiritual seeker must have faith in a god or divine entity to achieve self-realization. When one understands the teachings of the Upanishads, enlightenment is possible here and now without the word "God." The Mandukya Upanishad is for those students who want to practice spirituality without resorting to unnecessary abstract concepts. The Mandukya Upanishad provides a comprehensive map for the inward journey that shows the individual the way from the mundane to the eternal. It describes this state as the ultimate reality and the goal of human existence. When one understands the teachings of the Upanishads, then one realizes that life itself is a sort of worship that can shine on the altar of infinity. --From Chapter 1, "Awakening"

Book excerpt: Included is a foreword on the life and teachings of Swami Satyadharma, who passed away while writing the commentary on Dhyānabindu. Her commentary on Nādabindu is complete. The Dhyāna and Nādabindu Upaniṣads were probably composed between the ninth and fourteenth centuries CE. The bindu is a psychic centre located in the brain at the top back of the head. These upaniṣads focus on meditation on the bindu, the source point or origin of individual creation, where begins the primal sound or first vibration, the mantra Om. They define and describe in detail the mantra Om, the effects of meditating on it until one attains perfect liberation, merging with the Divine.Nādabindu describes the components of Om, that is, its three and a half measures (mātrā) which are the sounds a u m, and the half measure, the echo of m. Always meditating on Om, the yogin is liberated from worldly life, unaffected by his/her karmas. The nāda is first heard through the right ear, and many other inner sounds are heard. Eventually the yogin hears no other sounds and transcends duality.Dhyānabindu, an expansion of Nādabindu, confirms that meditation on Om can destroy all karmas. The yogin should meditate on the lotus of the heart, then at the eyebrow centre, then on the Sun, Moon and Agni, leading to the ātman. The six parts of yoga, the cakras, nāḍīs and prāṇas are described. Kuṇḍalinī Śakti can be awakened by the repetition of the mantra haṃsa, ham spontaneously accompanying the inhalation, and sa the exhalation, as well as uḍḍiyāna and jālandhara bandhas, khecarī mudrā and mahāmudrā. The ātman is described in detail. Finally, the teacher recommends meditating on the bija mantras of the five elements, the five prāṇas and the nāda.

Book excerpt: In the age-old tradition that has been handed to us by the highly realized vedic seers, any mantra is to be uttered only after the invocation of the mystic syllable "Om". But, what is Om? How should it be uttered? Why should it be uttered? What is its relation to the world we live in? How is it connected to the concept of God? What are its practical uses in our daily life? Such questions are clearly answered by Mandukya Upanishad. It is a concise treatise on the grandeur of Om. It offers some practical meditative instructions, which when sincerely followed by us, allow us to enter into the experiential world of the God-ultimate. This Upanishad contains 12 aphorisms. The present work is an attempt to thoroughly explain the intricacies contained in these aphorisms. Every aphorism is provided with a word to word meaning, a direct import and a detailed explanation. The commentary is non-traditional in its style and it does not belong to any one school of thought. I have chosen to link many branches of wisdom such as that of the Veda, Tantra, Purana, Sri Vidya, Modern Sciences, etc. This is to bring out a systematic and harmonious outlook which aims to connect the missing dots in the spiritual journey of a truth seeker. I welcome the interested reader into this enigmatic journey.

Book excerpt: This unique book explains in great detail the esoteric concept of 'OM/Aum' and 'Naad' as they are envisioned and elucidated by the Upanishads. All the various connotations and aspects of 'OM' as well as the 'Naad' are elaborately dealt with. While 'OM/Aum' is a monosyllabic word that represents the cosmic Supreme Consciousness that is all-pervading and is at the core of the entire living creation, the 'Naad' is the sound created by the vibration that this Consciousness produces in the vast realm of the cosmos. The 'Naad', the cosmic Sound, is the first and subtlest manifestation of life created by the Supreme Consciousness in all its myriad forms, from the most primitive to the most advanced. The 'OM' is a means to realize this Consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OM Mala is a book (and a mala or a rosary) about just one word-OM. OM is one of the shortest Sanskrit words, and yet is perhaps the most powerful one, besides being a globally recognized mystic mantra. The OM Mala gives 84 names of OM from Sanskrit texts and explains their meanings in 109 sections or beads: 108 chanting beads and one 'sumeru' bead. Each bead offers the meaning(s), explanation, traditions, etymology, and quotations for one or more names of OM. The book covers rare names of OM like 'shrutipada' and 'rasa' as well as common names like 'om', 'udgitha', and 'pranava'. Popular meanings (like Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva) and rare meanings (like inhalation, holding the breath, and exhalation) are included. The book contains teachings and narratives related to OM from Veda-s, Upanishad-s, Smriti-s, Purana-s, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Gita, Yoga, Tantra, Vaishnavism, Shaivism, and Shaktism. Pearls on OM from poems, plays, and works on music and Ayurveda are presented. The use of OM in Yogic breathing and meditation is explained and the explanations/relevance of OM in Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism is briefly touched upon. The OM Mala is a mini-encyclopaedia on OM and associated concepts in Indian religions and culture.
