Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom's Wonder offers a fresh reading of the Hebrew Bible's wisdom literature with a unique emphasis on "wonder" as the framework for understanding biblical wisdom. William Brown argues that wonder effectively integrates biblical wisdom's emphasis on character formation and its outlook on creation, breaking an impasse that has plagued recent wisdom studies. Drawing on various disciplines, from philosophy to neuroscience, Brown discovers new distinctions and connections in Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes. Each book is studied in terms of its view of moral character and creation, as well as in terms of the social or intellectual crisis each book identifies. Most general treatments of the wisdom literature spend too much time on issues of genre, poetry, and social context at the neglect of discussing the intellectual and emotional power of the wisdom corpus. Brown argues that the real power of the wisdom corpus lies in its capacity to evoke the reader's sense of wonder. An extensive revision and expansion of Brown's Character in Crisis (Eerdmans, 1996), this book demonstrates that the wisdom books are much more than simply advice literature: with wonder as the foundation for understanding, Brown maintains that wisdom is a process with transformation of the self as the goal.

During the 20th century, a considerable number of studies has beendedicated to the Alexandrian culture. This research requires a review of its a oeenjeux mA(c)thodologiquesa and a more ample and complete a oehistorical approacha seems to be necessary in order to comprehend to which extent the author might have been influenced by his social background. This study presents a comparison between scholars from different areas and with diverse approaches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the personification of Wisdom as a female figure - a central motif in Proverbs, Job, Sirach, Wisdom and Baruch. Alice M. Sinnott identifies how and why the complex character of Wisdom was introduced into the Israelite tradition, and created and developed by Israelite/Jewish wisdom teachers and writers. Arguing that by personifying Wisdom the authors of Proverbs responded to Israel's defeat by Babylon and the loss of Davidic monarchy, and by retrieving and transforming the Wisdom figure the authors of Sirach, Baruch and Wisdom responded to the spread of Hellenism and the potential loss of identity for Jews. Sinnott concludes that personified Wisdom functioned to reinterpret and transform the Israelite/Jewish tradition.

Hall gives us a penetrating history of wisdom, from its sudden emergence in the fifth century B.C. to its modern manifestations in education, politics, and the workplace. Hall’s bracing exploration of the science of wisdom allows us to see this ancient virtue with fresh eyes, yet also makes clear that despite modern science’s most powerful efforts, wisdom continues to elude easy understanding.

His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth." - John 19:35 With time and experience comes wisdom. John, the longest-surviving of the apostles, recorded in his Gospel a portrait of Jesus that displays the depth of years of reflection on who Jesus is and what he means to the world. Writing in light of the philosophies of his day, John describes Jesus as the incarnate Word, the divine Logos, the embodiment of all truth and wisdom. In this last volume of the Biblical Imagination Series, Michael Card completes his work on the four Gospels. He shows how John stands alongside the other Gospel writers to fill out the picture of Jesus' divine identity, with stories and sayings of Jesus not recorded by the others. This Jesus reorients our understanding of ourselves and the world around us, offering us nothing less than the way, the truth and the life. Like John before him, Card has written these words so that we may better believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing we have life in his name.

Now The Tree of Life is available in a third edition, complete with a new preface by the author and a special supplement that surveys the latest developments in wisdom research. This superb study thoroughly explores the wisdom writings of the Bible, interpreting this literature in a way that illumines the development of Israel's search for wisdom throughout its tumultuous history. Murphy looks at each wisdom book individually -- Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Ecclesiasticus, and Wisdom of Solomon -- and adds to them a discussion of wisdom from other parts of the Old Testament. His careful investigations expose the various guises that wisdom adopts -- the "fear of the Lord," moral formation, the universality of human experience, the mysteries of creation, and others.

Book excerpt: “There’s no fool like an old fool,” the saying goes. What is it about wisdom that sets it apart from mere intelligence? What is that elusive difference between a simple grasp of the facts and profound understanding? Wisdom has fascinated the human race for thousands of years; philosophers are notorious for being in love with it, and for centuries writers have tried to capture its essence in proverbs and fables. In this book, Trevor Curnow provides an accessible introduction to wisdom and the many ways we have thought about and tried to achieve it throughout history. Drawing on examples from a diversity of eras and places—from ancient Egypt to medieval Europe to modern Africa—Curnow explores the ways we have sought to overcome the problems posed by our existence, such as love and death, with a steadfast wisdom. He shows how many cultures have attributed wisdom to deities such as Apollo, Odin, and Sarasvati, and how, especially, we have placed it within the vehicle of the proverb, which has safeguarded its lessons throughout time and across cultures. Including a collection of one hundred sayings that offer a rich record of wisdom’s reification, this history gives new insight into what wisdom actually is and where we might find it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vision of Wisdom is Holy Inspired by God. God speaks according to His Word that has already been written (The Holy Bible). He will not speak anything contrary to His already written Word. Every word that is written in The Vision of Wisdom is in sync with God's already written Word. Before reading, pray and ask God to give you knowledge and understanding of what you're about to read. Without seeking God first, these words of wisdom will not make sense to the carnal mind. The Word of God speaks of this in 1 Corinthians 2:14 (NLT) But people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. God gave me 'The Vision of Wisdom' over the last eleven years, (2003-2014) after I sought Him asked Him for wisdom. This book is Volume I of III There is much that I do understand and then there are some that I, myself, still have not received the wisdom to understand exactly what God is saying, but as I continue to read and seek Him, He grants unto me more understanding of what He is saying. Therefore, I encourage you to seek God. Ask God for knowledge, wisdom and understanding. In the book of James; James 1:5 (NLT) it is written "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking." After you pray and ask God for knowledge, wisdom and understanding, believe that He has heard you and by faith receive because that's what you asked Him for. As you read The Vision of Wisdom, allow the words of wisdom to minister to your heart and mind. Don't try to figure it out carnally, if there's something you read that you don't understand, ask God for understanding. There were several times God had given me a phrase and the next sentence or sometimes a couple days later, He would give me what seemed like the same phrase all over again, but once I went back and read the two phrases I realized, though they were alike they were not totally the same. At first I could not understand why God was repeating Himself, just in a different manner. He then let me know-we learn by repetition, the more we hear or read something it will take root in us. Hence, His reason for doing this is because He is depositing His wisdom in us, not wisdom from man, but He is depositing-His wisdom in us as we take in His words. I know that "The Vision of Wisdom" will bless you just as it has blessed me, because these words are Holy Inspired by God, this wisdom is not of my own, but from Him. As you read, you too will know that the mind of man could not fathom what God is saying, therefore it had to come from Him. Thank God for a spiritual mind to understand the things of the spirit.
