Book excerpt: This book was compiled from writings by Hari Prasad Shastri, who devoted his life to the study and propagation of the non-dual teachings and their application through the Yoga of Self-Knowledge, Adhyatma Yoga. After receiving instruction from illumined sages in Northern India and confirming the essential teachings of the Upanishads in his own experience, he travelled in Japan, China and Europe and studied the classics of the world's wisdom traditions. In 1933, in London, he founded Shanti Sadan as a traditional centre of non-duality and the way of Self-Knowledge. Meditation Its Theory and Practice was one of the first books published by Shanti Sadan. It contains a distillation of insights and guidance in meditation as it is understood and practised in the non-dual schools, with special relevance for those who wish to seriously practise meditation without having adopted discipleship under a particular teacher. In the current edition, the original content has been somewhat re-arranged and augmented by clearly structured sets of meditation exercises that may be taken up for regular daily practice.

Book excerpt: Fifty years ago few people in the West had even heard of meditation, while today the concept of meditation is well known, and meditation methods are to be found everywhere. With so much information about meditation, how is a sincere seeker to find a meditation method which is both proven and effective? By using a method which has been used successfully through the centuries: Om Yoga Meditation. Om Yoga Meditation: Its Theory and Practice is a thorough guide providing all the information that might be desired for a successful meditation practice, illumining the art and science of effective inner life. Beginning with an in-depth explanation of what yoga is and what its goals are, and continuing with a background on the theory of mantra, Abbot George then shows the value of the unique mantra Om. He shows that Om Meditation is the original yoga, citing the classic scriptures of India and the testimony of the saints. In this book you will discover the techniques for using Om in meditation, and how to make your meditation the most effective. You will also learn the foundations of the yogic life that will support and nourish your practice, and be given the keys to bless others as well as yourself using Om. "The Holy word, Om, bestows the highest state" (Yoga Vashishtha 5:54) "This is the bridge to immortality. May you be successful in crossing over to the father shore beyond darkness" (Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.5,6).

Book excerpt: Buddhist meditation, while attracting less popular attention than some other meditative disciplines, has given rise to a particularly rich literature in recent years. Despite differences in style and terminology, these modern writings on Buddhist meditation serve much the same purposes as did the manuals and commentaries of the classical masters: to explicate and interpret the Buddha's teachings on meditation, to clarify the nature and value of the various meditative techniques and attainments, and/or to offer advice on the actual practice of meditation. Meditators are increasingly inclined to compare and evaluate critically what the different contemporary meditation masters have to say, to weigh up the results of relevant scientific studies, or to consult translations of the primary texts in search of the Buddha's 'original' teachings on meditation. Writers on meditation are also increasingly adopting an appropriately critical approach, particularly as regards the reliability of textual accounts. Relatively few still commit the old error of assuming that the Pali canon is a complete and faithful record of what the Buddha said on the subject, or that the classical commentators were infallible authorities. The present collection of twenty-eight readings is designed to give meditators, researchers, and general readers ready access to representative samples of those writings, and to the principal relevant texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 20 years meditation has grown enormously in popularity across the world, practised both by the general public, as well as by an increasing number of psychologists within their daily clinical practice. Meditation is now used to treat a range of disorders, including, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, and addiction. In the past twenty years we have also learned much more about the underlying neural bases for meditation, and why it works. The Psychology of Meditation: Research and Practice explores the practice of meditation and mindfulness and presents accounts of the cognitive and emotional processes elicited during meditation practice. Written by researchers and practitioners with considerable experience in meditation practice and from different religious or philosophical perspectives, he book examines the evidence for the effects of meditation on emotional and physical well-being in therapeutic contexts and in applied settings. The areas covered include addictions, pain management, psychotherapy, physical health, neuroscience, and the application of meditation in school and workplace settings. Uniquely, the contributors also present accounts of their own personal experience of meditation practice including their history of practice, phenomenology, and the impact it has had on their lives. Drawing on evidence from both research and practice, this is a valuable synthesis of the ways in which meditation can profoundly enrich human experience.
