Book excerpt: Mediating Marginality draws on eight years of excavation and survey at the newly discovered Bronze Age Cemetery of Puric-Ljubanj in the county of Vukovar-Syrmia in eastern Croatia. It also incorporates data from an ongoing landscape project that continues to provide evidence of an extensive, hitherto unknown, cultural group living on the margins between well known and documented groups, such as the Belegis and West Serbian variant of the Vatin cultural complex. The monograph explores what this marginality may have meant for these people and how they built a strong community identity through ongoing landscape modification that involved appropriating materials from a very limited palette and reworking and redepositing these in very specific ways over an exceptionally long period of time. Ideas surrounding the deployment of skill, stocks of knowledge and scales of performance are used to interrogate the social world the Spacva-Ljubanj mound builders created for themselves and reveal that although apparently marginalised they were far from impoverished and indeed appear to have created a thriving cultural heritage. The monograph closes with a discussion of how the project intends to go forward, placing particular emphasis on how the modern community can best benefit from continued research in the area.

Fieldwork in the Aegean, Egypt, Cyprus, and the Levant continues to add to our understanding of the nature of this contact and its social and economic significance, particularly to the cultures of the Aegean. Despite sophisticated discussion of the archaeological evidence, in particular on the part of Aegean and Mediterranean archaeologists, there has been little systematic attempt to incorporate anthropological perspectives on materiality and exchange into archaeological narratives of this material. This book addresses that gap and integrates anthropological discourse on contact, examining exchange systems, the gift, notions of geographical distance and power, colonization, and hybridization. Furthermore, it develops a social narrative of culture contact in the Mediterranean context, illustrating the reasons communities chose to engage in international exchange, and how this impacted the construction of identities throughout the region. While traditional archaeologies in the East Mediterranean have tended to be reductive in their approach to material culture and how it was produced, used, and exchanged, this book reviews current research on material culture, focusing on issues such as the biography of objects, inalienable possessions, and hybridization – exploring how these issues can further illuminate the material world of the communities of the Bronze Age Mediterranean.

Book excerpt: Identity and mobility are two very important topics in current Bronze Age research, since this period marks a dramatic increase in long-distance connections. In contrast with many of the large-scale research projects into these phenomena, this volume brings the search for identities back down to a local level; focusing on how identities were constructed within individual cemeteries, and what role mobility might have played for burial form and content. Using diverse social theories and drawing upon natural scientific methods, an approach is developed for investigating identities within cremation cemeteries; an often overlooked data source. Through the application of this approach to two case study sites (Vollmarshausen, near Kassel and Künzing, in Lower Bavaria), new insights could be gained into Late Bronze Age identities, their construction and negotiation, and the social structures within which they played out.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is the analysis of the MBA Period III level at Miletus, and it establishes certain fundamentals concerning the site: (1) the site was inhabited during the early MBA period, (2) the material culture reflects southwestern Anatolian traditions and therefore the inhabitants should be considered indigenous, (3) the settlement was located directly on the coast in an ideal harbor area, (4) this location afforded access to a north-south and east-west crossroad, (5) there is no evidence of hiatus, however this is the earliest period when Cretan influence is discernable in local pottery production and the first Minoan (MM IB--MM IIB) imports appear, and (6) although the quantity of these imports is high in comparison with MM IB--MM IIB imports elsewhere east of Crete, they account for less than 2% of the ceramic assemblage. These numbers are reversed in Period IV, when Minoan or Minoanizing pottery account for over 95% of the excavated material. The first chapter of this dissertation reviews the century-old excavation at Miletus as it pertains to its prehistoric settlements and provides a primer on the history and present state of excavation and research of MBA culture in southwestern Anatolia. The second, third and fourth chapters present the MBA level at Miletus, its general stratigraphy, architectural features, ceramics and small finds. Chapter 3 concerns the local ceramics, and the imported protopalatial ceramics are catalogued in Chapter 4. I examine the Milesian material within its larger geographic context in Chapter 5, isolating the Anatolian and Aegean parallels. Chapter 6 contains a discussion of the Middle Minoan influence in the eastern Aegean and its consequent impact on the nature of the Miletus settlement. Less than a decade ago, there was no indication that the Milesian peninsula had been settled in the Early or the Middle Bronze Ages. Because the prehistoric deposits previously excavated were Late Chalcolithic and Late Bronze Age in date, a hiatus of occupation was assumed. In 1997, our understanding of the site changed dramatically when a new excavation campaign uncovered a MBA Anatolian habitation level that was replete with imported Middle Minoan goods.

Book excerpt: Archaeologists excavating burials often find that they are not the first to disturb the remains of the dead. Graves from many periods frequently show signs that others have been digging and have moved or taken away parts of the original funerary assemblage. Displaced bones and artefacts, traces of pits, and damage to tombs or coffins can all provide clues about post-burial activities. The last two decades have seen a rapid rise in interest in the study of post-depositional practices in graves, which has now developed into a new subfield within mortuary archaeology. This follows a long tradition of neglect, with disturbed graves previously regarded as interesting only to the degree they revealed evidence of the original funerary deposit. This book explores past human interactions with mortuary deposits, delving into the different ways graves and human remains were approached by people in the past and the reasons that led to such encounters. The primary focus of the volume is on cases of unexpected interference with individual graves soon after burial: re-encounters with human remains not anticipated by those who performed the funerary rites and constructed the tombs. However, a first step is always to distinguish these from natural and accidental processes, and methodological approaches are a major theme of discussion. Interactions with the remains of the dead are explored in eleven chapters ranging from the New Kingdom of Egypt to Viking Age Norway and from Bronze Age Slovakia to the ancient Maya. Each discusses cases of re-entries into graves, including desecration, tomb re-use, destruction of grave contents, as well as the removal of artefacts and human remains for reasons from material gain to commemoration, symbolic appropriation, ancestral rites, political chicanery, and retrieval of relics. The introduction presents many of the methodological issues which recur throughout the contributions, as this is a developing area with new approaches being applied to analyze post-depositional processes in graves.
