Book excerpt: Media images such as commercials on television, magazines advertisements, movies, and internet advertisements portray images of what some individuals consider the ideal female and male body image. These media's image can cause individual to develop a negative body images. Furthermore and most significantly for this study, the media may contribute to how males and females perceive themselves as compared to unrealistic body image by displaying the ideal images as a realistic and necessary means to live a happy life. This research was conducted to determine media's impact on male and female's college age student's body perspective of body image. A modified version of the Determination of Body Image Dissatisfaction and Body Image Distortion Survey developed by Stunkard, Sorensen & Schulsinger (1983) was used. A total of 366 students responded. Results indicated college student are impacted by the media's images and these images influence the individuals' body Image. Results from this survey suggest that the media does have a statistically significant impact on the way young people perceive their body image. Females are more influenced by the media than their male peers. Survey results also indicated that females are most influenced by images in magazines but males are most influenced by images on the internet. Both female and male college students perceive themselves as physically smaller then they really are. Contrary to current research, the older students in this study were more influenced by media images as compared to younger students.

Unfortunately, less than half of those with eating disorders receive treatment, which can be very expensive. Thus, effective prevention has become a major public health priority. The Body Project is an empirically based eating disorder prevention program that offers young women an opportunity to critically consider the costs of pursuing the ultra-thin ideal promoted in the mass media, which improves body acceptance and reduces risk for developing eating disorders. Young women with elevated body dissatisfaction are recruited for group sessions in which they participate in a series of verbal, written, and behavioral exercises in which they consider the negative effects of pursuing the thin-ideal. Chapters provide information on the significance of body image and eating disorders, the intervention theory, the evidence base which supports the theory, recruitment and training procedures, solutions to common challenges, and a new program aimed at reducing obesity onset, as well as intervention scripts and participant handouts. The Body Project is the only currently available eating disorder prevention program that has been shown to reduce risk for onset of eating disorders and received support in trials conducted by several independent research groups. The group sessions are brief and fun to lead, and this guide provides all of the necessary information to walk clinicians, teachers, counselors, and volunteers through leading the program for vulnerable young women.

The portrayal of the exceptionally-fit body is often of bodies that are extremely difficult to develop and are often unattainable (Homan, McHugh, Wells, Watson and King, 2012). College age males and females are the first generation that is saturated by images of the exceptionally-fit body (Readdy, Watkins, & Cardinal, 2011). For individuals who internalize this stereotype, body image concerns and health risks are probable . The purpose of this study was to examine to what extent does the media's portrayal of the exceptionally-fit body cause increases in body image concerns and body dissatisfaction in both college age males and females, as well as to examine how these increases influence the development of characteristics associated with muscle dysmorphia. 74 subjects (males= 36, females= 38), were given a questionnaire packet which included a demographic questionnaire, SATAQ-3, BCS, MDI, DMS and OEQ. Subjects were recruited from gyms in southern California. Results showed that higher levels of internalization of the physically attractive stereotype from the media were associated with higher levels of body image concerns. The media influences both college age males and females equally, but females experience more pressure to attain the ideal body portrayed in the media. Results also showed that females desire to be thin, but also possess a drive for muscularity to a moderate degree. Characteristics of muscle dysmorphia can exist within females, but only to a minute degree. Body comparison was found to be a common practice between males and females. The findings in this study suggest that the growth and popularity of social media should be an area of interest for future research done on body image concerns.

Currently, positive media movements are attempting to create new positive body ideals in females. This study used a quantitative research approach to investigate the influence of realistic media exposure on body image. The study surveyed 68 college females who were exposed to a PowerPoint slide show containing images and videos, while an experimental group was not shown any images. All participants were asked 85 questions about pressures, importance, social comparison, and internalization of media images. Results found that the positive media group report significantly more disagreement on one of the items. This could be due to the short amount of exposure time. Future research will explore lengthier realistic media exposure on a younger population.
