Book Synopsis Ensuring Intellectual Freedom and Access to Information in the School Library Media Program by : Helen R. Adams
Download or read book Ensuring Intellectual Freedom and Access to Information in the School Library Media Program written by Helen R. Adams and published by Libraries Unlimited. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over two-thirds of all challenges to books and other resources reported to the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom occur in schools. This book explores intellectual freedom issues in school library media programs including selection of resources and materials selection policies, challenges and censorship, students' freedom to read, patron privacy and confidentiality of library records, the blocking of Internet resources, access to the school library media center, its resources, and services for students with special needs, and advocacy for minors' First Amendment rights in school library media programs. Throughout the text, practicing public school and private school library media specialists at different grade levels candidly share their stories and observations on how intellectual freedom principles and ALA policy statements apply to real life situations. Attorney Mary Minow provides vital information about the impact of the First Amendment, federal and state law, and court decisions on minors using libraries in schools. Whether a library media specialist in the field or a student in a graduate or undergraduate library and information studies program, readers will find both practical information and advice to complement the concepts found in the American Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Manual. Print and Web resources are included.
Book Synopsis A Discussion Guide for Information Power, Guidelines for School Library Media Programs by : M. Ellen Jay
Download or read book A Discussion Guide for Information Power, Guidelines for School Library Media Programs written by M. Ellen Jay and published by American Library Association. This book was released on 1988 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most recent set of national guidelines for the development of school library media programs, which was published in 1988, identifies underlying changes in the roles of the school library media specialist as well as in the program itself. Viewing the library media specialist as an initiator of curricular activities rather than a purveyor of support services, these guidelines emphasize leadership, partnership, planning, curricular needs, collection development, and equity of access to information. This discussion guide has been developed to help educators at all levels to plan meetings and conduct effective discussion sessions with persons who have become familiar with "Information Power" in its entirety, in order to evaluate local school library media programs in light of the recent revisions. The first of three sections identifies the principal concepts presented in "Information Power" and provides an overview of each of its eight chapters. Procedures by which discussion sections may be effectively organized to promote the successful exchange of knowledge and views are recommended in the second section. The final section identifies specific constituencies for discussion groups and suggests discussion questions for each of the groups--i.e., library media specialists, administrators and boards of education, classroom teachers, college and university faculty, state department of education personnel, and members of the community at large--as well as questions for mixed constituency groups and questions basic to all discussion sessions. Book Synopsis Dealing with Selection and Censorship by : Wisconsin. Department of Public Instruction
Download or read book Dealing with Selection and Censorship written by Wisconsin. Department of Public Instruction and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook focuses on intellectual freedom as it relates to school library media centers and public libraries. The purpose of this handbook is to help public libraries and school districts develop and adopt necessary policies and procedures that will build a solid foundation for intellectual freedom as part of the community and school climate and provide sources of assistance when an expression of concern or a complaint occurs. Although it contains suggestions for classroom teachers faced with challenges, the handbook does not have a major focus on resources selected specifically for classroom instruction. It is divided into four sections: School District Policies and Procedures: Selection and Reconsideration; School District Policies and Procedures: Internet Access; Public Library Policies and Procedures: Selection and Reconsideration; and Public Library Policies and Procedures: Internet Access. Both of the Selection and Reconsideration sections contain information on the philosophical base, statutory base, resource selection policy, reconsideration policy, staff development, communication and public information, and reconsideration in practice. The Internet Access sections include information on Internet filters, Internet policy, staff development, and communication and public information. Appendices include a selected bibliography, Wisconsin statues and administrative rules, Intellectual Freedom Statement, challenges to materials in school libraries, and sources of assistance. (AEF)
Book Synopsis Censorship and Selection by : Henry Reichman
Download or read book Censorship and Selection written by Henry Reichman and published by American Library Association. This book was released on 2001-05 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Censorship! The word itself sparks debate, especially when the context is the public school. Since the publication of the second edition of this landmark book in 1993, wired classrooms, legal challenges, and societal shifts have changed the landscape for the free exchange of ideas. Completely revised and updated, this new edition remains the most comprehensive guide for protecting the freedom to read in schools: For school librarians and media specialists, teachers, and administrators, Reichman covers the different media (including books, school newspapers, and the Internet), the important court cases (including recent litigations involving Harry Potter, the Internet, and Huck Finn), the issues in dispute (including violence, religion, and profanity), and how the laws on the books can be incorporated into selection policies. An entire chapter is devoted to troubleshooting and answering the question of What do we do if...? Look no further for the best and most specific information on providing access and facing challenges to intellectual freedom. You'll find answers if you are asking questions like these: * What is the distinction between making selection decisions and censoring?
