Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medford in the Revolution: Military History of Medford, Massachusetts, 1765-1783; Also List of Soldiers and Civil Officers, With Genealogical and Biographical Notes The people of Medford met in town meeting on December 7, I 773, and heard the letter from the Committee of Correspondence concerning the three tea ships in Boston harbor. A commit tee was appointed to draw up resolutions and to report at an adjourned meeting, December 16. While they were adopting the report, the exciting town meeting was being held in the Old South meeting house, Boston, and when Medford's letter was forwarded, the tea was oating in the bay. Among the Sons of Liberty who took part in the Tea Party was John Fulton of Medford. He was one of the party who disguised themselves at the house of his brother-in-law, Nathaniel Bradlee, corner of Tremont and Hollis Streets. The men were assisted by Mrs. Nathaniel Bradlee and Mrs. Fulton in assuming their disguise and in removing the stains of the evening's work. The men were saved from capture by the authorities by the coolness of the women. The tea troubles were not settled by making a tea pot of Boston harbor. In the latter part of I774 it began to be whispered that some of the good people of Medford were using the forbidden beverage. A committee was appointed to enquire if any person or persons Sells or consumes any East India teas in their families and if any such found in this Town that they cause their names to be posted up in some publick place. Then the voters, not wishing to bind their neighbors to what they would not abide by, Voted that we will not use any East India Teas in our Families till the Acts be Repealed. In June, 1774, the Boston Port Bill became a law, and all business in Boston and vicinity was at a stand still. It put an end to the lightering business, which was Medford's chief source of revenue. Farmers from the east and north brought their products to Medford, which with bricks, leather and rum manufactured in the town, were transported down the Mystic river by boats or lighters. November I4, 1774, suffering but in exible, the town voted, This Town does not approve of any bricks being carried to Boston till the committees of the neighboring towns shall consent to it. Book excerpt: "Based on the Invalid Lists of 1806 and the Pension Lists of 1818, 1832 and 1840, this book supplies--in addition to name, age, service, residence, and source of information--the date of the pension application; date and place of birth; service record; names of all family members cited in the pension statement; and place or places of migration to, from, or within Tennessee. The 1840 Pension List is especially interesting to researchers as it includes widows' applications. Widows were required to submit proof of marriage and children, and their applications, therefore, constitute a rich vein of genealogical source material."--Amazon.

Book excerpt: Times of crisis call for revolutionary leadership. What better model could we have for courage and creativity under fire than those who found themselves in positions of leadership during the American Revolutionary War? Men and women, famous and obscure, of European and African descent--the leaders of the revolution faced outrageous odds and dire consequences should they fail. Yet they stuck to their principles, winning the most unlikely of victories and not only shaping a new country but reshaping the world. Now Pat Williams helps you apply their genius to your sphere of influence. Through the remarkable stories of more than 25 leaders of the American Revolution, you'll discover fresh insight into how great leaders are formed, refined, tested, and strengthened. As Thomas Paine wrote, "We have it in our power to begin the world over again." Let Pat Williams show you how to lead in our day with revolutionary courage, confidence, and a serving heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One a revolutionary leader and the other a vagabond who deserted from the Continental Army, Samuel Adams and Henry Tufts appear opposites, yet they were two sides of the same coin. While one devoted his life to overthrowing British colonial rule and the other to rambling, womanizing and stealing horses, Adams and Tufts represented the self-interested capacity for survival as well as the lofty ideals that made the American Revolution possible. When they crossed paths in 1794, with Adams serving as governor of Massachusetts and Tufts a hapless prisoner facing the gallows, it was the serendipitous climax of three decades of revolutionary activity and crime. Recalling the sometimes complementary roles of virtue and vice in the early republic, the story of these two men reflects themes of the American Revolution, including class differences among colonists, the importance of education in fostering republicanism, and the founders' emphasis on improving criminal justice. It is also a story of redemption--both for these two imperfect individuals and for the revolution that they participated in.
