Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May of 1978, several hundred of the friends, colleagues and former students of Professor Herbert C. Brown gathered on the campus of Purdue University to note his formal retirement, to honor him for his past contributions to chemistry and to wish him continued success in research. It was a time of reunion and recollection, a time for looking back and giving recognition to a lifetime of accomplishment. There was the ceremony of a banquet, presided over with inimitable wit by Professor Derek Davenport, and the dedication of the Herbert C. Brown Archives, with addresses by Dr. Alfred Bader, of Aldrich Chemicals, and Dr. Alan Schriesheim, of Exxon. There was the publi cation of a book of the personal reminiscences of students and post doctoral colleagues - "Remembering HCB." But it was also a time for looking at the present and into the future with a set of scien tific lectures, mainly by former students or associates, who des cribed their current or projected research activities. That is what this book is about. The papers, some of which are expanded versions of the lectures, fall into two broad groups - some deal with the interplay of struc ture and mechanism, the others deal with the use of organometallics in synthesis. It is, perhaps, no accident that these are the two main areas of H. C. Brown's research interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organometallic Chemistry is the study of chemical compounds containing bonds between carbon and metal. The term "e;Metal"e; is defined deliberately broadly in this context and may include elements, such as silicon or boron, which are not metallic but are considered to be metalloids. Almost all branches of chemistry and material science now interface with organometallic chemistry. Organometallics find practical uses in stoichiometric and catalytic processes, especially processes involving carbon monoxide and alkene-derived polymers. Organometallic (OM) chemistry is the study of compounds containing, and reactions involving, metal-carbon bonds. The metal-carbon bond may be transient or temporary, but if one exists during a reaction or in a compound of interest, we're squarely in the domain of organometallic chemistry. Despite the denotational importance of the M-C bond, bonds between metals and the other common elements of organic chemistry also appear in OM chemistry: metal-nitrogen, metal-oxygen, metal-halogen, and even metal-hydrogen bonds all play a role. Metals cover a vast swath of the periodic table and include the alkali metals (group 1), alkali earth metals (group 2), transition metals (groups 3-12), the main group metals (groups 13-15, "e;under the stairs"e;), and the lanthanides and actinides. The principal idea of this book is to offer a comprehensive coverage of unconventional and thought-provoking topics in organometallic chemistry. It also supplies practical information about reaction mechanisms, along with the descriptions of contemporary applications to organic synthesis, organized by mechanism and kinetic. It will serve as a valuable reference tool for students and professional of organic and post organic chemistry, who need to become better acquainted with the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organometallic chemistry is an interdisciplinary science which continues to grow at a rapid pace. Although there is continued interest in synthetic and structural studies the last decade has seen a growing interest in the potential of organometallic chemistry to provide answers to problems in catalysis synthetic organic chemistry and also in the development of new materials. This Specialist Periodical Report aims to reflect these current interests reviewing progress in theoretical organometallic chemistry, main group chemistry, the lanthanides and all aspects of transition metal chemistry. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: Transition metal catalysis belongs to the most important chemical research areas because a ubiquitous number of chemical reactions are catalyzed by transition metal compounds. Many efforts are being made by industry and academia to find new and more efficient catalysts for chemical processes. Transition metals play a prominent role in catalytic research because they have been proven to show an enormous diversity in lowering the activation barrier for chemical reactions. For many years, the search for new catalysts was carried out by trial and error, which was costly and time consuming. The understanding of the mechanism of the catalytic process is often not very advanced because it is difficult to study the elementary steps of the catalysis with experimental techniques. The development of modern quantum chemical methods for calculating possible intermediates and transition states was a breakthrough in gaining an understanding of the reaction pathways of transition metal catalyzed reactions. This volume, organized into eight chapters written by leading scientists in the field, illustrates the progress made during the last decade. The reader will obtain a deep insight into the present state of quantum chemical research in transition metal catalysis.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series provides a continuing critical review of the literature concerned with mechanistic aspects of inorganic and organometallic reactions in solu tion, with coverage over the whole area being complete in each volume. The format of this second volume is very similar to that of the first, with material arranged according to reaction type and compound type along generally accepted lines. Papers discussed are selected on the basis of relevance to the elucidation of reaction mechanisms but may also include results of a nonkinetic nature, such as stereochemical studies and product ratios, when useful mechanistic information can be deduced. In this volume extra space has been given to areas concerned with electron transfer processes and substitution reactions of inert complexes, and to improve convenience for the reader the text has been further divided to form three additional chapters. Electron transfer processes are discussed in three chapters: "General and Theoretical," "Reactions between Two Complexes," and "Metal-Ligand Redox Reactions," while six chapters are concerned with substitution and related reactions. Here reactions of inert chromium and cobalt complexes are discussed in separate chapters. The period of literature coverage is January 1981 through June 1982 inclusive and in a few instances, where delays in delivery of journals have been encountered, the issues not covered will be included in the next volume.
