Book Synopsis Correlation Between the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Irradiated Iron and Low-Carbon Steel by : NLj Milašin
Download or read book Correlation Between the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Irradiated Iron and Low-Carbon Steel written by NLj Milašin and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radiation hardening of iron and low-carbon steel was studied on the basis of transmission electron microscopy and tension test data. No visible defects were observed in the iron specimens after irradiation to 3.5x1019 n/cm2, E>1 MeV, at 35 C, as well as after postirradiation annealing at 150 C. Marked microstructural changes occurred in steel irradiated to 2.5x1018 n/cm2 both at 320 C and 450 C. In the former case a 5.1x109 cm-2 increase in dislocation density was found, while in the latter the presence of small dislocation loops of average diameter 200 Å and density 2.4x1014 cm-3 was observed.

Book Synopsis Effect of Irradiation on the Notched-Bar Impact Properties of Some Plain-Carbon Steels by : G. J. Deily
Download or read book Effect of Irradiation on the Notched-Bar Impact Properties of Some Plain-Carbon Steels written by G. J. Deily and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of reactor irradiation upon the notched-bar impact properties of several mild-carbon steels was investigated. ASTM types A 703 and A 2124 boiler steels, and aluminum treated, 0.34 per cent carbon steel were tested. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature was raised significantly by irradiation and the maximum impact strength, under ductile conditions, was reduced in some cases.

Book excerpt: This compilation opens with a section discussing the key interactions required to successfully friction stir weld carbon steels. Friction stir welding is a relatively recent development, predominantly technologically established using aluminum, where the lower melting point of the material greatly aided the process. Next, corrosion models of carbon steel in aqueous solution are reviewed under atmospheric and oxygen depleted environments by focusing on the cathodic reaction and the corrosion film formed on carbon steel as a function of pH and anions. In conclusion, the temperature relation of interlamellar spacing of pearlite with supercooling in carbon steels, based on a previously theoretically foundation, has been determined by the pearlite and bainite phase volumes in alloy steels from the degree of supercooling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of fast-neutron (>1 Mev) irradiation on the mechanical properties of structural metals and alloys was studied. Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm.
