Book excerpt: This study offers insight into what grade configuration is more likely to positively impact student achievement during the middle grades and supports students remaining in an elementary setting with fewer transitions during the middle grades to most benefit reading and mathematics achievement. Findings are useful to school boards, superintendents, and school district administrators interested in educational policy development and research on transition especially when restructuring school grade configurations and building new school sites.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the academic achievement of sixth grade students enrolled in a traditional middle school model versus those enrolled in a K-8 school model by analyzing English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics scores. Developmental Scale Score (DSS) data from the 2017 Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) were collected from three K-8 schools and three middle schools in one high-performing Florida school district. Results from an independent samples t-test revealed that middle school student scores were slightly higher in overall ELA and mathematics proficiency, but the differences were not substantive. Cross-tabulation was utilized to compute the proportion of students making learning gains in ELA and mathematics. The results were nearly identical among the middle school students and the K-8 students relative to ELA; however, the proportion of students making learning gains in mathematics was substantially higher among the K-8 students. To investigate equity in the distribution of achievement, a comparison was made between Middle School and K-8 bi-serial correlation coefficients measuring the strength and direction of the relationship between student achievement and socioeconomic status (SES). Results suggested that the negative influence of low-SES on academic achievement in ELA and mathematics was notably stronger among students enrolled in the middle school model. While making school construction decisions, policy makers will be informed through these findings as to which type of grade span configuration is most likely to positively impact student achievement.

Book excerpt: When school districts determine grade configurations of their schools, traditionally academic achievement is not their focus. Instead, most grade configurations are based on student growth, existing facility capacity, and transportation requirements. Since school ratings are based on students' academic achievement, districts should be aware if they are minimizing their students' achievement by placing them in schools with ineffective grade configurations. This study evaluates the affect grade configuration has on fifth and sixth grade reading and mathematics achievement. State assessment results for schools of various grade configurations containing fifth and sixth grade levels were analyzed. Data were collected from years 2005 and 2006. The results between the two years varied. In 2005, there was a significant difference in mathematics achievement but not reading achievement. In 2006, there was a significant difference in reading achievement but not mathematics achievement. Further research is needed to determine the cause of the variance.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of grade span configuration on the academic achievement of sixth grade students in Florida public schools. Grade configuration (PK-6, PK-8, and 6-8) was the independent variable. Academic achievement, the dependent variable, was measured using 2009 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) Reading and Mathematics mean scale scores and the percentage of students making annual learning gains from 2008 to 2009. School socioeconomic status (SES) was used as a covariate to equalize the effect of poverty on achievement. Random samples of schools were drawn from the population of all Florida public schools with sixth grades in 2009, and from Florida's 2009 Academically High Performing School Districts. Findings showed that there was a statistically significant difference in achievement based on grade level configuration in reading and mathematics for all schools and for schools in Academically High Performing Districts. In all cases, the PK-6 configuration was statistically significantly higher than 6-8, with varied significance between PK-6 and PK-8, and PK-8 and 6-8. The strongest practical significance for all schools was found for learning gains in mathematics, with 26% of the variance in mean learning gain percentages accounted for by grade configuration when controlling for SES. Recommendations were made that future studies address differentiating grade configurations by instructional models and other factors that could impact achievement. The degree and the fidelity to which the middle school concept is implemented in 6-8 schools should be accounted for before making conclusions about the impact of configuration on academic achievement of students in that configuration.

Book excerpt: Mathematics and reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) have increased among students attending elementary and secondary schools since the first time the assessment was administered. These score increases have been observed both for Black and White students; statistically significant score differences between the two racial/ethnic groups have also been observed. This statistical analysis report, "Achievement Gaps: How Black and White Students in Public Schools Perform in Mathematics and Reading on the National Assessment of Educational Progress," examines achievement gaps between Black and White public-school students at both the national and state levels. The report uses data from two assessment programs--main NAEP and Long-Term Trend (LTT) NAEP. While both programs assess reading and mathematics, they are different in three major respects: (1) main NAEP assesses performance of students in 4th- and 8th-grades, while LTT NAEP assesses performance of students ages 9 and 13; (2) main NAEP reports results for both the national and state levels, while LTT NAEP reports results for the national level only; (3) main NAEP was first administered in the 1990s, while LTT NAEP was first administered in the 1970s. The report uses results from all assessment years including the 2007 main NAEP and the 2004 LTT NAEP. All results are for public school students. The percentages of Black and White students in individual states vary by state. Some states' trends could not be reported because there were not enough Black or White students in the sample to have reportable results. This report is organized as follows. Following an introduction, the remainder of this report presents first mathematics and then reading results. In each section, long-term trend results are presented first, giving national results only for public school students ages 9 and 13. These are followed by both national and state results for public school fourth- and eighth-graders from main NAEP. National data from main NAEP are also presented by (1) gender; and (2) eligibility categories for the National School Lunch Program. The last section consists of two appendixes that contain relevant technical notes and supplemental tables. (Contains 12 footnotes, 11 tables, and 24 figures.) [This report was prepared under a project of the NAEP Education Statistics Services Institute (NAEP-ESSI) of the American Institutes for Research (AIR) in support of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). For the report highlights, see ED505902.].

Book Synopsis A Longitudinal Study of School Practices and Students' Characteristics that Influence Students' Mathematics and Reading Performance of Arizona Charter Middle Schools by : Carrie Lynn Giovannone
Download or read book A Longitudinal Study of School Practices and Students' Characteristics that Influence Students' Mathematics and Reading Performance of Arizona Charter Middle Schools written by Carrie Lynn Giovannone and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, Arizona legislators passed laws specifically to implement charter schools in Arizona. Approving 15 year charters (i.e., contracts), allowing charter schools to cross school district boundaries, and requiring the charter schools to administer the state assessment are three of the many charter school statutes written into law. In 2010, those initial charters are expiring. The variation in school practices that occur between charter schools is great as reported by researchers nationwide. This difference does not stop at the borders of Arizona; some Arizona charter schools are labeled as excelling in performance while others are labeled as underperforming. There is limited research of Arizona charter schools and the variance that exists among them. There were two purposes for this dissertation. The first purpose was to analyze the influence of school practices and student characteristics on charter middle school students' mathematics and reading performance at grade 8. The second purpose was to assess those influences over time (i.e., 2007-2009). The assessment used was Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) which remained stable during this span of time. Multiple imputations were performed for missing data. Hierarchical linear cross-classified random effects modeling (HLM/CCREM) was used to assess the data while taking student mobility into consideration. The results showed that the effect of teacher experience influenced lower achieving students, that teachers teaching out of their area of expertise had a negative effect on mathematics and reading achievement of students, and attending a charter school that was converted from a traditional public school has an advantage in Arizona. An indicator of whether a student was attending a charter school in 2006 (prior to the time period of this study) was added to the model and showed that students scored higher in mathematics and reading if they also attend a charter school in 2006. All factors assessed in this study were accounted for even if they didn't remain in the model due to fit statistics. These results will contribute to the field of education by providing empirical evidence of the effects of charter school practices on student achievement.
