Book Synopsis Trace Metals and Infectious Diseases by : Jerome O. Nriagu
Download or read book Trace Metals and Infectious Diseases written by Jerome O. Nriagu and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts explore the influence of trace metals on the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Many parts of the world in which common infectious diseases are endemic also have the highest prevalence of trace metal deficiencies or rising rates of trace metal pollution. Infectious diseases can increase human susceptibility to adverse effects of metal exposure (at suboptimal or toxic levels), and metal excess or deficiency can increase the incidence or severity of infectious diseases. The co-clustering of major infectious diseases with trace metal deficiency or toxicity has created a complex web of interactions with serious but poorly understood health repercussions, yet has been largely overlooked in animal and human studies. This book focuses on the distribution, trafficking, fate, and effects of trace metals in biological systems. Its goal is to enhance our understanding of the relationships between homeostatic mechanisms of trace metals and the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Drawing on expertise from a range of fields, the book offers a comprehensive review of current knowledge on vertebrate metal-withholding mechanisms and the strategies employed by different microbes to avoid starvation (or poisoning). Chapters summarize current, state-of-the-art techniques for investigating pathogen-metal interactions and highlight open question to guide future research. The book makes clear that improving knowledge in this area will be instrumental to the development of novel therapeutic measures against infectious diseases. Contributors M. Book excerpt: Mathematical models have become invaluable tools for understanding the intricate dynamic behavior of complex biochemical and biological systems. Among computational strategies, logical modeling has been recently gaining interest as an alternative approach to address network dynamics. Due to its advantages, including scalability and independence of kinetic parameters, the logical modeling framework is becoming increasingly popular to study the dynamics of highly interconnected systems, such as cell cycle progression, T cell differentiation and gene regulation. Novel tools and standards have been developed to increase the interoperability of logical models, which can now be employ to respond a variety of biological questions. This Research Topic brings together the most recent and cutting-edge approaches in the area of logical modeling including, among others, novel biological applications, software development and model analysis techniques.
Book Synopsis Binding, Transport and Storage of Metal Ions in Biological Cells by : Wolfgang Maret
Download or read book Binding, Transport and Storage of Metal Ions in Biological Cells written by Wolfgang Maret and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 990 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal ions play key roles in biology. Many are essential for catalysis, for electron transfer and for the fixation, sensing, and metabolism of gases. Others compete with those essential metal ions or have toxic or pharmacological effects. This book is structured around the periodic table and focuses on the control of metal ions in cells. It addresses the molecular aspects of binding, transport and storage that ensure balanced levels of the essential elements. Organisms have also developed mechanisms to deal with the non-essential metal ions. However, through new uses and manufacturing processes, organisms are increasingly exposed to changing levels of both essential and non-essential ions in new chemical forms. They may not have developed defenses against some of these forms (such as nanoparticles). Many diseases such as cancer, diabetes and neurodegeneration are associated with metal ion imbalance. There may be a deficiency of the essential metals, overload of either essential or non-essential metals or perturbation of the overall natural balance. This book is the first to comprehensively survey the molecular nature of the overall natural balance of metal ions in nutrition, toxicology and pharmacology. It is written as an introduction to research for students and researchers in academia and industry and begins with a chapter by Professor R J P Williams FRS.
Download or read book Modeling Life written by Alan Garfinkel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the mathematical tools essential for students in the life sciences to describe interacting systems and predict their behavior. From predator-prey populations in an ecosystem, to hormone regulation within the body, the natural world abounds in dynamical systems that affect us profoundly. Complex feedback relations and counter-intuitive responses are common in nature; this book develops the quantitative skills needed to explore these interactions. Differential equations are the natural mathematical tool for quantifying change, and are the driving force throughout this book. The use of Euler’s method makes nonlinear examples tractable and accessible to a broad spectrum of early-stage undergraduates, thus providing a practical alternative to the procedural approach of a traditional Calculus curriculum. Tools are developed within numerous, relevant examples, with an emphasis on the construction, evaluation, and interpretation of mathematical models throughout. Encountering these concepts in context, students learn not only quantitative techniques, but how to bridge between biological and mathematical ways of thinking. Examples range broadly, exploring the dynamics of neurons and the immune system, through to population dynamics and the Google PageRank algorithm. Each scenario relies only on an interest in the natural world; no biological expertise is assumed of student or instructor. Building on a single prerequisite of Precalculus, the book suits a two-quarter sequence for first or second year undergraduates, and meets the mathematical requirements of medical school entry. The later material provides opportunities for more advanced students in both mathematics and life sciences to revisit theoretical knowledge in a rich, real-world framework. In all cases, the focus is clear: how does the math help us understand the science?

Book Synopsis Signals and Systems in Biomedical Engineering by : Suresh R. Devasahayam
Download or read book Signals and Systems in Biomedical Engineering written by Suresh R. Devasahayam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years Biomedical Engineering has received a great deal of attention as one of the emerging technologies in the last decade and for years to come, as witnessed by the many books, conferences, and their proceedings. Media attention, due to the applications-oriented advances in Biomedical Engineering, has also increased. Much of the excitement comes from the fact that technology is rapidly changing and new technological adventures become available and feasible every day. For many years the physical sciences contributed to medicine in the form of expertise in radiology and slow but steady contributions to other more diverse fields, such as computers in surgery and diagnosis, neurology, cardiology, vision and visual prosthesis, audition and hearing aids, artificial limbs, biomechanics, and biomaterials. The list goes on. It is therefore hard for a person unfamiliar with a subject to separate the substance from the hype. Many of the applications of Biomedical Engineering are rather complex and difficult to understand even by the not so novice in the field. Much of the hardware and software tools available are either too simplistic to be useful or too complicated to be understood and applied. In addition, the lack of a common language between engineers and computer scientists and their counterparts in the medical profession, sometimes becomes a barrier to progress.

Book Synopsis Magnesium in the Central Nervous System by : Robert Vink
Download or read book Magnesium in the Central Nervous System written by Robert Vink and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain is the most complex organ in our body. Indeed, it is perhaps the most complex structure we have ever encountered in nature. Both structurally and functionally, there are many peculiarities that differentiate the brain from all other organs. The brain is our connection to the world around us and by governing nervous system and higher function, any disturbance induces severe neurological and psychiatric disorders that can have a devastating effect on quality of life. Our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the brain has improved dramatically in the last two decades. In particular, the critical role of cations, including magnesium, has become evident, even if incompletely understood at a mechanistic level. The exact role and regulation of magnesium, in particular, remains elusive, largely because intracellular levels are so difficult to routinely quantify. Nonetheless, the importance of magnesium to normal central nervous system activity is self-evident given the complicated homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the concentration of this cation within strict limits essential for normal physiology and metabolism. There is also considerable accumulating evidence to suggest alterations to some brain functions in both normal and pathological conditions may be linked to alterations in local magnesium concentration. This book, containing chapters written by some of the foremost experts in the field of magnesium research, brings together the latest in experimental and clinical magnesium research as it relates to the central nervous system. It offers a complete and updated view of magnesiums involvement in central nervous system function and in so doing, brings together two main pillars of contemporary neuroscience research, namely providing an explanation for the molecular mechanisms involved in brain function, and emphasizing the connections between the molecular changes and behavior. It is the untiring efforts of those magnesium researchers who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of magnesiums role in biological systems that has inspired the collation of this volume of work.
