Book excerpt: This brief presents the results of a study on the development of the mobile app-supported math trail program for learning mathematics. This study is a part of the MathCityMap-Project, a project of the MATIS I Team from IDMI Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, Germany, that comprises math trails around the city that are supported by the use of GPS-enabled mobile phone technology. The project offers an activity that is designed to support students in constructing their own mathematical knowledge by solving the prepared mathematical tasks on the math trail and interacting with the environment, including the digital environment. The brief focuses specifically on the development of a model for a mobile app-supported math trail programme and the implementation of this programme in Indonesia. It offers both an empirical exploration of its implementation as well as critical assessment of students’ motivation in mathematics, their own performance, as well as teachers’ mathematics beliefs. It concludes with a future-forward perspective by recommending strategies for implementation in schools, among the general public of the existing math trails (including its supporting tool). It also discusses strategies for developing and designing new trails and suggests further research in other geographical regions and contexts for continued project development and implementation. Learning Mathematics in a Mobile App-Supported Math Trail Environment articulates an innovative and exciting future for integrating real mathematical tasks and geographic and digital environment into effective mathematics education.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of A Tour of the Calculus and The Infinite Ascent offers an enlightening and enthralling tour of the basics of mathematics, and reveals a world of fascination in fundamental mathematical ideas. One, Two, Three is David Berlinski’s captivating exploration of the foundation of mathematics, its fundamental ideas, and why they matter. By unraveling the complex answers to these most elementary questions—What is a number? How do addition, subtraction, and other functions actually work? What are geometry and logic?—Berlinski reveals the intricacy behind their seemingly simple exteriors. Peppered with enlightening historical anecdotes and asides on some of history’s most fascinating mathematicians, One, Two, Three, revels in the beauty of numbers as Berlinski shows us how and why these often slippery concepts are as essential to the field of mathematics as to who we are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two volume classic comprises two titles: "Patterns of Plausible Inference" and "Induction and Analogy in Mathematics". This is a guide to the practical art of plausible reasoning, particularly in mathematics, but also in every field of human activity. Using mathematics as the example par excellence, Polya shows how even the most rigorous deductive discipline is heavily dependent on techniques of guessing, inductive reasoning, and reasoning by analogy. In solving a problem, the answer must be guessed at before a proof can be given, and guesses are usually made from a knowledge of facts, experience, and hunches. The truly creative mathematician must be a good guesser first and a good prover afterward; many important theorems have been guessed but no proved until much later. In the same way, solutions to problems can be guessed, and a god guesser is much more likely to find a correct solution. This work might have been called "How to Become a Good Guesser."-From the Dust Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which is based on Pólya's method of problem solving, aids students in their transition from calculus (or precalculus) to higher-level mathematics. The book begins by providing a great deal of guidance on how to approach definitions, examples, and theorems in mathematics and ends with suggested projects for independent study. Students will follow Pólya's four step approach: analyzing the problem, devising a plan to solve the problem, carrying out that plan, and then determining the implication of the result. In addition to the Pólya approach to proofs, this book places special emphasis on reading proofs carefully and writing them well. The authors have included a wide variety of problems, examples, illustrations and exercises, some with hints and solutions, designed specifically to improve the student's ability to read and write proofs. Historical connections are made throughout the text, and students are encouraged to use the rather extensive bibliography to begin making connections of their own. While standard texts in this area prepare students for future courses in algebra, this book also includes chapters on sequences, convergence, and metric spaces for those wanting to bridge the gap between the standard course in calculus and one in analysis.

Book excerpt: Mel Gibson teaching Euclidean geometry, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins acting out Zeno's paradox, Michael Jackson proving in three different ways that 7 x 13 = 28. These are just a few of the intriguing mathematical snippets that occur in hundreds of movies. Burkard Polster and Marty Ross pored through the cinematic calculus to create this thorough and entertaining survey of the quirky, fun, and beautiful mathematics to be found on the big screen. Math Goes to the Movies is based on the authors' own collection of more than 700 mathematical movies and their many years using movie clips to inject moments of fun into their courses. With more than 200 illustrations, many of them screenshots from the movies themselves, this book provides an inviting way to explore math, featuring such movies as: • Good Will Hunting • A Beautiful Mind • Stand and Deliver • Pi • Die Hard • The Mirror Has Two Faces The authors use these iconic movies to introduce and explain important and famous mathematical ideas: higher dimensions, the golden ratio, infinity, and much more. Not all math in movies makes sense, however, and Polster and Ross talk about Hollywood's most absurd blunders and outrageous mathematical scenes. Interviews with mathematical consultants to movies round out this engaging journey into the realm of cinematic mathematics. This fascinating behind-the-scenes look at movie math shows how fun and illuminating equations can be.

Book excerpt: A guide to the practical art of plausible reasoning, this book has relevance in every field of intellectual activity. Professor Polya, a world-famous mathematician from Stanford University, uses mathematics to show how hunches and guesses play an important part in even the most rigorously deductive science. He explains how solutions to problems can be guessed at; good guessing is often more important than rigorous deduction in finding correct solutions. Vol. II, on Patterns of Plausible Inference, attempts to develop a logic of plausibility. What makes some evidence stronger and some weaker? How does one seek evidence that will make a suspected truth more probable? These questions involve philosophy and psychology as well as mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’m glad you’ve found Ontario’s most comprehensive grade 9 math (MTH1W) preparation and support material! As a private maths, ESL, and high school prep tutor of 7 years, I’ve worked alongside my students taking the MTH1W course to provide the first of this kind: a workbook that features over 320 pages of lessons, homework problems, evaluations, and full, handwritten solutions in exact chronological order of REAL course delivery. Here's What's Inside: - Unit 00 (Basic Review of Fractions and Numeration): A refresher on working with fractions and numbers to set students up for success as they begin their high school journeys. - Unit 01 (Numbers): All 7 lessons, homework sets, and full handwritten solutions for each problem within the first unit of grade 9 math in Ontario. This unit features a real MTH1W unit 1 quiz and a full unit test. - Unit 02 (Data): All 5 lessons, homework sets, and full handwritten solutions for each problem within the Data unit of grade 9 math in Ontario. This unit features a real MTH1W unit 2 Data assignment and a full unit test. - Unit 03 (Variables and Exponents): 7 comprehensive lessons focusing on the application of exponents laws, polynomial expression operations, and algebra. This unit features a real checkpoint quiz along with a full unit test. All practice sets and evaluations are equipped with full handwritten solutions. - Unit 04 (Relations): Introducing students to the linear function, in unit 4 we look at exploring linear relations with an emphasis on cause-and-effect relationships between independent and dependent variables. - Unit 05 (Geometry): Students seem to struggle most with grasping the concepts within unit 5. For this reason, unit 5 is very visually dense featuring very clear and concise examples walking students through the problem-solving process. Of course, all homework sets along with both unit evaluations feature full handwritten solutions. - Unit 06 (Finance): It's about time; has finally added some financial education to the grade 9 math curriculum. In this unit, we walk students through the application of budgeting, simple and compound interest, and the concepts of appreciation/depreciation. - Course Recap and Finals Prep: An overview of each unit along with a breakdown of the most important concepts is provided for each unit of the course. Every unit features a practice exam-style review - of course, with full solutions. But wait, there's more: a real culminating assessment and EQAO exam to prepare students for their end-of-course testing. Unlike the other resources out there claiming to feature ‘MTH1W’ content but fail to deliver anything beyond the old academic (MPM1D) course material, this is a brand new workbook that features near-identical elements to the 2023/2024 delivery of the MTH1W course. Featuring real lessons; real homework problems; real evaluations; real, handwritten solutions; real students; and real educators – this resource is sure to provide support for all students preparing for – and working through – the new MTH1W course. I guarantee immense satisfaction with this product; if I’m wrong, a full refund will be awarded. Thank you, and enjoy :)
