Book excerpt: Lorsqu'on examine le discours grammatical sur le discours rapporté, on est surpris par la pauvreté descriptive et par le peu de formes dont nous semblons disposer, hormis sacro-saints discours direct et indirect, pour jongler avec la parole de l'autre. Le problème réside dans cette volonté de tracer à tout prix une frontière catégorique entre les paroles qu'on rapporte et son propre discours. Cet ouvrage inventorie les définitions et usages classiques comme le discours direct et le discours indirect, modes conventionnels de citation, pour en arriver à épingler et à expliquer : • le fameux discours indirect libre auquel nous adjoignons un nouveau comparse, le discours direct libre afin de rééquilibrer un système de citation ; • des formes hors-norme, qui mélangent les critères distinctifs des deux formes précédentes, (discours direct avec "que", discours indirect avec "guillemets",... • des formulations ambiguës (conditionnel de citation, formes d'attribution en "selon X", "d'après X", "aux yeux de X",...) qui laissent place à la rumeur et aux on dit ; • des cas où se mélangent les voix de chacun, ces paroles à tous et à personne (stéréotypes, clichés langagiers, proverbes, lieux communs). L'ouvrage allie démarche théorique neuve, influencée par les théories de l'énonciation et de l'analyse conversationnelle et interactionnelle, à un regard historique ouvert à la pratique quotidienne de la citation. Point ici de prescription ou d'interdit mais une "analyse du discours" applicable transversalement à tous les domaines des sciences humaines, dès lors qu'elles se fondent sur une négociation des paroles d'autrui.

Book excerpt: Exploring Discourse Practices in Romanian is a glimpse into Romanians’ style of interaction, which has developed eclectically at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures. It is oriented towards modern literacy while being deeply rooted in a long oral tradition, and paradoxically displays both attachment to local specifics and commitment to mimetic speech and act(ion)s imported from various cultural spaces. The book presents a characterisation of the Romanian cultural space in terms of various discourse practices, drawing on recent challenging theoretical proposals, and concluding with in-depth corpus-based analyses. The chapters focus on five main topics (the co-construction of discursive identities, discursive polyphony, textualisation of attitudes and emotions, conceptual metaphors, and grammaticalisation of context) explored in various discourse genres (political discourse, media discourse, professional discourse, face-to-face conversation, literature of memoires, and the usage of Romanian by non-natives). The theoretical framework utilised here is discourse analysis, defined in a broad sense (with regards to discourse patterns, pragmatic phenomena, conversation analysis, and rhetoric). The volume, having both a theoretical and an applied dimension, will appeal to an international readership, including researchers interested in current developments of pragmatics and discourse analysis.

Book excerpt: At the heart of the French Revolution there lay a fundamental paradox: how to liberate the minds of the people whilst simultaneously ensuring their loyalty to the new regime. It is an exploration of the facts and implications of this tension that forms the basis of this study, which reconstructs the intellectual world of the Revolution. The new radical regime attacked the old institutionalized forms of Catholic worship and instruction, yet retained the catechetical outlook with its dogmatic mindset as an important feature of political education. Catechisms not only conveyed information in an accessible manner, they also revealed the intellectual tendencies of those who favoured the genre. Civic catechisms were meant to play an important part of revolutionary instruction; they were the only category of texts repeatedly mentioned in the National Assembly and in various pieces of legislation, including education bills, and there were calls for a 'national catechism'. The status of the catechisms changed throughout the Revolution, and this study also investigates the degree of continuity of purpose across the period, as well as the catechisms' place alongside other texts such as speeches and bills. An important contribution to the literature on the intellectual history of the French Revolution, this book will also be of interest to scholars of rhetoric, education and the intellectual history of the eighteenth century, as well as to revolutionary studies in general.
