Hero and Hero-Worship: Fandom in Modern India explores the areas of political, religious, film and cricket star fandoms; analyzing the rise of star formations and their consequent fandoms, star-fan bonds, as well as the physical and virtual space that both stars and fans inhabit. As perhaps one of the first book-length studies on Indian fandom, this volume not only draws on the works of Jenkins and other fandom scholars, but also explores the economic and cultural specificities of Indian fandom. This book will be of particular interest to scholars working in the field, as well as general readers interested in understanding star-fan interactions and intersections.

Book excerpt: I find the notion of a day dedicated to a gender a little condescending, given that every day is a reason to celebrate who you are. Having said that, we aren't about to rock the boat and have faithfully brought to you, via our cover story, six inspiring women who did choose to rock the boat and how. While I'm on the topic, and the concept of glass ceilings is still a bit fresh, did you know, car heaters, Monopoly, fire escapes, life rafts, medical syringes, refrigerators, ice cream makers, dishwashers, closed circuit television, central heating systems and kevlar were all invented by women? Did you also know that despite where India is in terms of being a global presence or any other metric you choose to apply, women couldn't work in a bar in Delhi until a few short years ago, and still cannot work past 8.30pm in a bar in Mumbai? Talking of antiquated laws, I hear there's still one going around, which thankfully our cops ignore, that requires a person to present a doctor issued certificate stating he/she is medically required to drink alcohol. Talking of alcohol we have a few vodka cocktail recipes for you this time along with a quick feature on beer cocktails, a rare presence in most bar menus. In fact, apart from the much made Shandy, I doubt most of us have had the opportunity to experience them. Summer is here, so I'm guessing all manner of bubbly, frothy, chilled relief will be explored, beer cocktails being the notable entrant this time around. Which reminds me, beer too is said to be invented by a woman though strangely that beverage doesn't seem to be as accepted by women in this country as in others. Given the lovely weather we're experiencing at this perfect time between Summer and Winter, what do you plan to do? Will you be exploring the great outdoors or using the time to catch up with reading at outdoor cafes alternating between coffees and summery fruit drinks, or other such? Do share on our forum! Stay well. Sid

Book excerpt: Across Asia, consumer culture is increasingly shaping everyday life, with neoliberal economic and social policies increasingly adopted by governments who see their citizens as individualised, sovereign consumers with choices about their lifestyles and identities. One aspect of this development has been the emergence of new wealthy middle classes with lifestyle aspirations shaped by national, regional and global media – especially by a range of new popular lifestyle media, which includes magazines, television and mobile and social media. This book explores how far everyday conceptions and experiences of identity are being transformed by media cultures across the region. It considers a range of different media in different Asian contexts, contrasting how the shaping of lifestyles in Asia differs from similar processes in Western countries, and assessing how the new lifestyle media represents not just a new emergent media culture, but also illustrates wider cultural and social changes in the Asian region.

Book excerpt: Yoga gurus on lifestyle cable channels targeting time-pressured Indian urbanites; Chinese dating shows promoting competitive individualism; Taiwanese domestic makeover formats combining feng shui with life planning advice: Asian TV screens are increasingly home to a wild proliferation of popular factual programs providing lifestyle guidance to viewers. In Telemodernities Tania Lewis, Fran Martin, and Wanning Sun demonstrate how lifestyle-oriented popular factual television illuminates key aspects of late modernities in South and East Asia, offering insights not only into early twenty-first-century media cultures but also into wider developments in the nature of public and private life, identity, citizenship, and social engagement. Drawing on extensive interviews with television industry professionals and audiences across China, India, Taiwan, and Singapore, Telemodernities uses popular lifestyle television as a tool to help us understand emergent forms of identity, sociality, and capitalist modernity in Asia.
