Book excerpt: This title provides a thorough theoretical and practical introduction to the application of neural networks to pattern recognition and intelligent signal processing. It has been tested on students, unfamiliar with neural networks, who were able to pick up enough details to successfully complete their masters or final year undergraduate projects. The text also presents a comprehensive treatment of a class of neural networks called common bandwidth spherical basis function NNs, including the probabilistic NN, the modified probabilistic NN, and the general regression NN.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a number of high-performance construction materials, including concrete, steel, fiber-reinforced cement, fiber-reinforced plastics, polymeric materials, geosynthetics, masonry materials and coatings. It discusses the scientific bases for the manufacture and use of these high-performance materials. Testing and application examples are also included, in particular the application of relatively new high-performance construction materials to design practice. Most books dealing with construction materials typically address traditional materials only rather than high-performance materials and, as a consequence, do not satisfy the increasing demands of today''s society. On the other hand, books dealing with materials science are not engineering-oriented, with limited coverage of the application to engineering practice. This book is thus unique in reflecting the great advances made on high-performance construction materials in recent years. This book is appropriate for use as a textbook for courses in engineering materials, structural materials and civil engineering materials at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also suitable for use by practice engineers, including construction, materials, mechanical and civil engineers.

Some specific topics covered include investigation and repair of glazed brick cladding, the benefits and problems of ASTM C 1324 for analyzing hardened masonry mortars, time-of-cooling effects on mortar joint color, and the selection and use of natural and manufactured stone adhered veneer. Other subjects examined include defection criteria for masonry beams, the effect of void area on brick masonry performance, seismic evaluation of low-rise reinforced masonry buildings with flexible diaphragms, and greening of mortars. B&w photos and illustrations are included. Trimble is affiliated with the Brick Industry Association. Brisch is affiliated with Rockwell Lime Company. There is no subject index.

Book excerpt: This volume provides an in-depth, state-of-the-art exploration of the entire gamut of modern masonry construction -- properties and performance of masonry materials, design criteria and methods in reinforced masonry, complete design applications for both low and high-rise masonry, and environmental features. This new edition reflects the landmark changes in the philosophy in the 1992 Uniform Building Code (e.g., introduction of Strength Design concepts of bearing and shear wall analysis; changes in lateral force levels; revision of the Base Shear Formula). Integrates design principles with the governing Uniform Building Code throughout; demonstrates the symbiotic relationships that exist among the various structural components (e.g. beams, columns, lateral force resisting systems); presents complete designs for reinforced concrete and structural steel; contains problem examples demonstrating how to design various structural components, and features four case studies (numerical examples) showing how to integrate the various structural components into a complete system. For structural designers, draftsman, and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masonry walls constitute the interface between the building’s interior and the outdoor environment. Masonry walls are traditionally composed of fired-clay bricks (solid or perforated) or blocks (concrete or earth-based), but in the past (and even in the present) they were often associated as needing an extra special thermal and acoustical insulation layer. However, over more recent years investigations on thermal and acoustical features has led to the development of new improved bricks and blocks that no longer need these insulation layers. Traditional masonry units (fired-clay bricks, concrete or earth-based blocks) that don’t offer improved performance in terms of thermal and acoustical insulation are a symbol of a low-technology past, that are far removed from the demands of sustainable construction. This book provides an up-to-date state-of-the-art review on the eco-efficiency of masonry units, particular emphasis is placed on the design, properties, performance, durability and LCA of these materials. Since masonry units are also an excellent way to reuse bulk industrial waste the book will be important in the context of the Revised Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC which states that the minimum reuse and recycling targets for construction and demolition waste (CDW) should be at least 70% by 2020. On the 9th of March 2011 the European Union approved the Regulation (EU) 305/2011, known as the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and it will be enforced after the 1st of July 2013. The future commercialization of construction materials in Europe makes their environmental assessment mandatory meaning that more information related to the environmental performance of building materials is much needed. Provides an authoritative guide to the eco-efficiency of masonry units Examines the reuse of waste materials Covers a range of materials including, clay, cement, earth and pumice
