Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, , course: Conference, language: English, abstract: Indian Retail Scenario: Organized retailing has exponentially emerged to contribute to the growth of Indian retail sector. It constitutes 3% of the total retail market and expected to grow at a rate of 42% in 2008. According to estimates provided by Technopak, organized retail in India is expected to receive investments of $25 billion, taking the size of modern retail to $75 billion by 2011. These investments imply that share of organized retail will grow from the present 3 % to approximately 15-18 % by 2011-12. With the onset of a globalize economy in India, the Indian consumer's psyche has changed. They are well versed with the concept of value for money, quality and service standards offered worldwide, in turn they are becoming more demanding. These demands are the visible impacts of the Indian organized retail sector. The evident increase in consumerist activity is colossal; it is replicated in money making recess for the Indian organized retail sector. Indian Retail is in the midst of a retail revolution, seen in sprawling number of malls developed from 50 operational malls in 2005 to 250 mall by 20083. Multiple formats have sprung up across different cities. City landscapes are dotted with malls and customers have problems of plenty as far as deciding shopping destinations is concerned.

The foremost desire of every brand manager in such a market is to create a distinctive identity and a pre-emptive position for the brand in the consumer's mind space. Finding a position that is meaningful for the consumer and assures him of a distinctive benefit offered by no other competitor ensures survival and sustainability for the brand. For a Multinational company, that finds itself in the midst of a culture and customs which are absolutely different from those of its home country, brand positioning may involve several critical decisions like whether or not to use a standardized strategy for all the markets, up to what extent to adapt to the local culture, what values to inculcate into the brand and what values to emphasise while positioning it, and whether to emphasise the country of origin of the brand or not. The Indian market is characterized by a unique blend of traditional values and modern approaches, and the evaluation criterion used by the consumer to judge a product or place value on a brand consists of a varying mix of such contrasting parameters. In this marketing environment marked by such psychographic characteristics of an average consumer it is interesting to get an insight into the strategies that are being used or can be used by the MNCs dealing in Fast Moving Consumer Goods to position their brands in the Indian market. The book is aimed at developing a broad understanding of the brand positioning strategies of multinational companies dealing in fast moving consumer goods in India and the factors affecting their positioning strategies.

Book excerpt: The modern consumer is no longer attracted by single-minded, predictable and one-benefit-focused brand promises. The old-fashioned FMCG communication strategies based on television, radio and print with constant repetition have become outdated. From Great to Gone shows that what’s needed are ’Lego’ strategies, whereby the marketing and communication strategies are built up by many key facets (like building blocks) and delivered to the consumer through a mix of various touch points. Most importantly, you need to leave consumers to put all of that together themselves. There are major internal and external hurdles to transforming FMCGs successfully into FICGs - Fast Innovating Consumer Goods. It requires new brand strategies and flatter, more top-down than bottom-up, decision-making organisations and a 21st-century model for advertising agencies. Externally these companies need a new route to market through transformation of their old retail dependencies. Changes are also required in all communication delivery, reflecting modern consumers’ connectivity and unlimited access to information. In the book the authors showcase what the winners of the 21st century have in common that has enabled them to become FICGs. New, unimagined models continue emerge, to which, with the authors’ guidance producers and retailers may develop their own sustainable responses.

Even successful companies cannot sit back and rest, but need to prepare for the next wave of change. In the face of this complexity, it is all the more important to take stock of current knowledge, based on insights and experience from leading scholars in the field. What do we know from extant studies, and what are the ensuing best practices? What evolutions are ahead, and will current recipes still work in the future? This Handbook sheds light on these issues.
