Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward Palmer: A Biographical Sketch Read at the Meeting of January 10, 1911, on the Occasion of the Anniversary of Dr. Palmer's Birth Dr. Palmer next went to Utah. He carried with him a letter of introduction to Brigham Young, who assisted him most willingly in his work by giving him letters to the authorities in the southern part of the territory. His work was chiefly in the vicinity of St. George, 111 the southwest corner of the territory. This region, considerably lower than the great Utah basin, is remarkable for its semitropical products, such as pomegranates, cotton, etc., on which account it is sometimes called Dixie Land. From St. George he made a long and painful journey across what is now the southern corner of Nevada to Hardyville and Camp Mohave, on the Colorado River, and thence across southern California to San Francisco. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1880s a massive scientific effort was launched by the Smithsonian Institution to discover who had built the prehistoric burial mounds found throughout the United States. Arkansaw Mounds tells the story of this exploration and of Edward Palmer, one of the nineteenth century’s greatest natural historians and archaeologists, who was recruited to lead the research project. Arkansas was unusually rich in prehistoric remains, especially mounds, and became a major focus of the study. Palmer and his team of researchers discovered that the mounds had been built by the ancestors of the historic North American Indians, shattering the then-popular theory that a lost non-Indian race had built them.

Book excerpt: Much has been written about Edward Palmer's explorations and botanical achievements, the most comprehensive by Rogers McVaugh in his book, Edward Palmer, Plant Explorer of the American West (1956), and Marvin D. Jeter, editor of Edward Palmer's Arkansaw Mounds (1990; 2010). But despite their extensive and far reaching research into Palmer's explorations, Palmer and his family are still somewhat of a mystery. Palmer piqued my interest as I read through some of his journals and correspondence in the National Anthropological Archives at the Smithsonian Institution. I wanted to know more about this seemingly frail, lonely man, not Palmer the botanist, or Palmer the doctor, or Palmer the collector, but what made Palmer the man.

Book excerpt: Manuscripts, Politics and Oriental Studies commemorates the life and works of Johann Gottfried Wetzstein (1815-1905) as a scholar, manuscript collector, and consul in Berlin and Damascus. Beyond research into Wetzstein's own time, special attention is given to the impact his efforts to acquire manuscripts have had until this day. Several contributions also illustrate contemporary developments that give context to his own career as a scholar and diplomat. The particular focus of this volume allows to explore the history of Oriental scholarship not purely through the lens of academic posts and publications but encourages us to discover lifes such as Wetzstein's, without academic stardom yet laying the material foundations of textual work for generations. Contributors are Kaoukab Chebaro; François Déroche; Faustina Doufikar-Aerts; Alba Fedeli; Ludmila Hanisch †; Michaela Hoffmann-Ruf; Ingeborg Huhn; Robert Irwin; Boris Liebrenz; Astrid Meier; Samar El Mikati El Kaissi; Claudia Ott; Holger Preißler †; Christoph Rauch; Helga Rebhan; Anke Scharrahs; Jan Just Witkam.
