Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Chemical Physiology No apology is necessary in presenting to the American medical public the work of one so widely known and universally acknowledged as an authority as Professor Lehmann. In so doing, however, I am surrounded with more than ordinary difficulties. A correct English translation of a German work is no easy task; but when the original is not a full discussion of the subject considered, but as compressed a statement of facts as is compatible with clearness, the difficulty of avoiding idiomatic expressions is greatly increased. From Dr. Lehmann's views of the forces operative in living organisms, I must express my dissent. Dr. Jackson has been kind enough, at my request, to prepare an article on these views, stating the doctrines which he has so ably advocated for many years. To adapt the work for the use of students of physiology, I have incorporated in the text additional matter (derived mainly from notes on Dr. Jackson's Lectures, Carpenter's Human Physiology, Todd and Bowman's Physiological Anatomy, Kolliker's Microscopic Anatomy, &c.), of a more purely physiological nature, which will be found included in brackets, thus [ - ]. Short notes have also been added, in the shape of an Appendix, on kindred subjects not treated of by the author; and illustrations selected from various sources have been introduced, instead of referring, as the author has done, to the "Atlas of Physiological Chemistry, by Otto Funke." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physiology I have (been induced to undertake this Work with a view to supply a want which has long/been felt by the student of Physiology-rof a condensed work which should embrace all the most import ant facts connected with the subject. The limited amount of time at the disposal of the student of medicine is not insufficient to enable him. To wade through the more elaborate treatises and although chiefly intended for the student, it is to be hoped that it may prove serviceable to many medical practitioners, more especially those who may have pupils under their instruction. In its construc tioii, I have availed myself of all the more impor tant Works On Physiology. I am also indebted for many views expressed in this Work to the lectures on Physiology delivered by Prof. John N. Reid, M.D., of Victoria College, Toronto, during my academic course. It is my ardent hope that it may cfiect the desirable object for which it is intended in a satis factory manner; and if so, I shall feel greatly rewarded for my exertions. The body, than from that of their chemical relationships to one another; hence the book deals with a department of Physiology more than with a department of Chemistry. Carbon present is con verted into carbon dioxide and hydrogen into water. If the combustion tube is furnished with a delivery tube which dips beneath the surface of clear lime water the characteristic reaction for carbonates is given. Organic liquids are characterized by being inflammable or by yielding inflammable vapors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A cell may be defined as a mass Of living material containing in its interior a more solid structure called the nucleus. The nucleus exercises a controlling influence over the nutrition and subdivision Of the cell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physiology: With Practical Exercises AT the present day, to teach Physiology by means of formal lectures and systematic text-books alone is no more satis factory than it would be to till the farms of America with the wooden plough of Bengal. Some benefit can certainly be gained from the mere reading of a good text-book or listening to a good lecturer; but the result will be meagre in comparison with the capabilities of the subject, and the knowledge thus acquired will be more likely to sink to the level of cram than to rise to the level of education. In this book an attempt has been made to interweave formal exposition with practical work. In the way my experience at the Harvard Medical School and the Western Reserve University has shown to be best suited to the needs and the opportunities of the American student. An arrangement of the Practical Exercises with reference to the systematic course has this great advantage - that by a little care it is possible to secure that the student shall be actually working at a given subject at the time it is being lectured on. Cross-reference from lecture-room to laboratory, and from laboratory to lecture-room, from the detailed discussion of the relations of a phenomenon to the living fact itself, is thus rendered easy, natural, and fruitful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine The general method of presenting the subject of physiology is the same as that followed in all of the other experimental sciences, viz., the laboratory method, according to which the student is led to dis cover for himself certain facts and to formulate from his collected data conclusions which represent fundamental principles of the science. This method of presenting the experimental sciences - chemistry, physics, and the biological sciences, including physiology, psychology, pharmacology, and pathology - is an expensive one, both as to the time and the money involved in it; but from the standpoint of pedagogy it is more economical than the text-book method, because it leads directly and surely to definite results. In answer to the question as to just what these results are which follow the modern laboratory method' of instruction, it may be stated first of all that it cultivates in the student the capacity of close and accurate observation; it affords an opportunity for valuable practice in the systematic recording of the observations; it develops the power of logical thought in drawing tenable conclusions from the Observed data; and, in the formulation of conclusions, it stimulates the ability to express the thoughts in concise and unambiguous terms. In the second place, practice of this kind makes the student independent and furnishes him with just the mental equipment needed for later life in whatever line his activities may be directed. If such an education is more important for one profession than another, the medical profession is certainly the one in which its importance is greatest. The physics, chemistry, and biology studied in preparation for medicine, and the physiology, pharmacology, and pathology Of the medical course Should give the student a most admirable equipment for dealing with the complex problems of clinical practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for a Practical Course in Chemical Physiology IN writing this book for the use of medical students the author has departed from the method usually followed. The subject matter is practically limited to experiments and deductions from the experiments, and is not meant to supply the full.and ordered information obtainable from a text-book of physiological chemistry. The arrangement of the work differs from that generally followed, in that the student is at the outset provided with substances familiar to him, such as a potato, an egg, lard, butter, etc. From these he prepares, by simple chemical manipulations, the proximate constituents and their decomposition pro ducts, and studies their chemical reactions and physical properties. In this way he is introduced to the subject without interposing complex chemical conceptions, which the usual arrangement of dividing the subject into the study of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins necessarily involves. In teaching practical physiological chemistry to students, who have had only an elementary training in organic chemistry, it seems on the whole more satisfactory and more scientific to impose no tax on the faith of the pupil, even if the work covered is less comprehensive than it might otherwise be. The knowledge acquired in such a course as outlined in this book is at least real, and questions beyond the scope of personal demonstrations by the student may well be left to treatment in lectures. In order to induce the student to record his own observations; to draw his conclusions from them, and to correlate the facts observed in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological Chemistry IN view of the results attained from the course given in physiological chemistry in this University, as well as the experience of others, the author is firmly convinced of the superiority of the laboratory method of instruction over the didactic, believing that it is only by practical work that the student can become familiar with the physio logical changes in progress in the animal body and their products. This book has been prepared with the aim of imparting accurate knowledge through the student's own observation. It has seemed advisable to include with the directions for experimental work a brief explanation of the facts observed, so as to call attention to their meaning; or, at times, to state others which are important, but which could not well be demonstrated in such a course as this. Some acquaintance with general chemistry and with chemical manipulation is presupposed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physiological Chemistry in Thirty Lectures The following lectures are not intended to embrace all the results of physiological-chemical investigation. On the contrary, the aim has been to discuss only those discoveries which are known to be of general interest and importance. All isolated facts, of however great significance for the individual investigator in the field, of which the value is not fully established and where the connection to other observations is not clearly known, have been intentionally omitted. The lectures should lead to individual thought and serve to incite further investigation and at the same time give one a general survey of the field covered by physiological chemistry. Corresponding to this purpose, great care has been used with regard to selecting the literature upon which the lectures are based. It is evident that within the space allotted only a limited number of researches could be cited. The "Zentralblatter" with their abstracts and especially Asho and Spiro's "Ergebnisse der Physiologie" must serve to fill in the gaps. Methods and descriptions of individual compounds arc not discussed in detail. It is not possible for any one to work well from brief descriptions. Practical laboratory experience is necessary, and cannot be replaced by anything else. The reader is referred to Felix Hoppe-Seyler's "Handbuch der physiologisch-cherai-schen Analyse" for all such particulars.
