Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Elementary Chemical Physiology and Urine Analysis This little book is an outgrowth of the course given to second year students in the Medical School of Northwestern University, and represents in its present form the practical laboratory work as now followed in the course of study required for graduation. The time devoted to the study of chemistry and chemical physiology in our American medical colleges has been altogether too short, and only within very recent years, with a few notable exceptions, has any attempt been made to impart systematic knowledge in this direction. But now the views of medical teachers are undergoing a rapid change and among the scientific studies recognized as forming a rational groundwork for the study of medicine proper, physiological chemistry is justly regarded as of the first importance. It is the belief of the Author that instruction in chemistry should be given through two years of the course of the medical student. While it may be urged that general chemistry forms no proper part of the curriculum of the medical school it is certainly true that no one of our schools can afford to abandon it until it is generally agreed to make it a requirement for admission. But this is a long way in the future. In his first year work, therefore, the student should be taught the elements of general chemistry both in the classroom and the laboratory, the laboratory work consisting of simple experiments followed by qualitative analysis. Such a course opens the way for the laboratory practice in chemical physiology in the second year, and this should be made practical and simple. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for the Physiological Laboratory The present edition is considerably altered. The Introduction has been enlarged, the Histology revised, and the Chemical Physiology considerably added to and improved. The Physiology Proper has also undergone some modification. In each division of the book much new matter has been introduced. The object of the authors in this edition, as in the former ones, has been to make the book of real practical value to the student, and not to burden him with descriptions of methods which are not within his scope. The alterations have been suggested by the experience of many years teaching, and we think that they will be found to add to the usefulness of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological and Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology TO offer to the medical profession in general and to the medical student in particular a new work embodying laboratory methods of clinical chemistry and toxicology, where so many admirable treatises are in existence, may appear at first sight an unprofitable and useless labor. But all such previous works have either been too voluminous for general use, or too complicated to serve as an ordinary working manual. What the student needs is a work brief enough to give him a clear understanding of the methods of chemical diagnosis, and broad enough so that its pages may comprise all that he will need in the intelligent practice of his profession. While this little work does not pretend to be a com plete working manual of medical chemistry and toxicology, if it accomplishes the purpose for which it was written, that of leading the. Book Synopsis Concepts of Biology by : Samantha Fowler
Download or read book Concepts of Biology written by Samantha Fowler and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepts of Biology is designed for the single-semester introduction to biology course for non-science majors, which for many students is their only college-level science course. As such, this course represents an important opportunity for students to develop the necessary knowledge, tools, and skills to make informed decisions as they continue with their lives. Rather than being mired down with facts and vocabulary, the typical non-science major student needs information presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Even more importantly, the content should be meaningful. Students do much better when they understand why biology is relevant to their everyday lives. For these reasons, Concepts of Biology is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand.We also strive to show the interconnectedness of topics within this extremely broad discipline. In order to meet the needs of today's instructors and students, we maintain the overall organization and coverage found in most syllabi for this course. A strength of Concepts of Biology is that instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. Concepts of Biology also includes an innovative art program that incorporates critical thinking and clicker questions to help students understand--and apply--key concepts.
