Book excerpt: From the 9/11 attacks to waterboarding to drone strikes, relations between the United States and the Middle East seem caught in a downward spiral. And all too often, the Central Intelligence Agency has made the situation worse. But this crisis was not a historical inevitability -- far from it. Indeed, the earliest generation of CIA operatives was actually the region's staunchest western ally. In America's Great Game, celebrated intelligence historian Hugh Wilford reveals the surprising history of the CIA's pro-Arab operations in the 1940s and 50s by tracing the work of the agency's three most influential -- and colorful -- officers in the Middle East. Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt was the grandson of Theodore Roosevelt and the first head of CIA covert action in the region; his cousin, Archie Roosevelt, was a Middle East scholar and chief of the Beirut station. The two Roosevelts joined combined forces with Miles Copeland, a maverick covert operations specialist who had joined the American intelligence establishment during World War II. With their deep knowledge of Middle Eastern affairs, the three men were heirs to an American missionary tradition that engaged Arabs and Muslims with respect and empathy. Yet they were also fascinated by imperial intrigue, and were eager to play a modern rematch of the "Great Game," the nineteenth-century struggle between Britain and Russia for control over central Asia. Despite their good intentions, these "Arabists" propped up authoritarian regimes, attempted secretly to sway public opinion in America against support for the new state of Israel, and staged coups that irrevocably destabilized the nations with which they empathized. Their efforts, and ultimate failure, would shape the course of U.S. -- Middle Eastern relations for decades to come. Based on a vast array of declassified government records, private papers, and personal interviews, America's Great Game tells the riveting story of the merry band of CIA officers whose spy games forever changed U.S. foreign policy.

Who closed their factories in U.S. communities and opened them in other countries? Who kept their U.S. workers? pay stagnant while their income soared? Who wants to sell all the coal and oil that they own no matter how hot the earth gets? Who flooded U.S. cities and towns with opioid prescription drugs? Not foreign governments and not illegal immigrants. The answer is: rich American capitalists. Without rules, many capitalists will attempt to monopolize markets. They will also dump their wastes into the environment and use their economic power to try to control governments. Trump and his henchmen are changing the rules to benefit the rich, not ?Make America Great Again?. U.S. history can guide us how to truly make America better but Americans must learn what works and what does not and vote accordingly.

This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When he was a student at Oxford University, C. S. Lewis wrote to a friend expressing his great admiration of and enthusiasm for the novels of Nathaniel Hawthorne, particularly The House of the Seven Gables and Transformation (British title of The Marble Faun). This study examines the parallels between these two kindred spirits and their works, focusing on their similar worldviews, their personal backgrounds and lifestyles, and the "Ultimates" they both pondered. It discusses common themes in their works, such as myth, scientism, and "the great power of blackness." Their respective attitudes toward these issues and others, such as faith, repentance, heaven and hell, confession, church attendance, the clergy, and Puritanism are strikingly similar. Considerable attention is given to "companion pieces" of the two writers, with discussion of the so-called "Fortunate Fall" in The Marble Faun and Perelandra, veil imagery in "The Minister's Black Veil," The Blithedale Romance, and Till We Have Faces, influence of Bunyan's allegory on The Pilgrim's Regress and "The Celestial Railroad," and multiform love in The Four Loves and The House of the Seven Gables. Examination of such affinities between these two writers and their works provides mutual illumination and enhanced appreciation of each.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nelson Dilworth had a varied career, including time as a farmer, a newspaper publisher, World War I soldier, and state legislator. In a political career that would span nearly a quarter century, Senator Dilworth became known across California as a gifted orator, unashamed to express his faith in Jesus Christ, who delivering powerful speeches on the unique freedoms granted to Americans by the Constitution and the opportunities and high standard of living given American citizens by the free market. In many of his speeches, Dilworth returned to the theme that the freedom enjoyed by Americans today was established and preserved by the bloodshed of earlier generations, that it is an accomplishment and opportunity rarely found in human history. In themes echoed by Ronald Reagan's "A Time for Choosing" speech more than a decade later, Dilworth also repeatedly discussed the important concept that this unique freedom is both precious and fragile, and must be preserved and valued by each generation in order to be passed to the next; "Liberty is never lost to a nation until it is lost in the souls of the men who compose that nation. I feel safe in asserting that it is both obvious and apparent that we, today, are the beneficiaries of the courageous past achievements of our forefathers in political liberty and political institutions. But not only are we the present beneficiaries, we are the trustees of the future. In our hands rests all that is precious in America... It is your high privilege to preserve the best in America, to improve it, and to pass it on to posterity, your children and mine. We can, in honor and integrity, do no less. No sacrifice is too great to accomplish this." (pp. 17-18)Praise for Senator Dilworth: "Incidentally, I was deeply impressed with your composition "Let's Sing About America." Our young people particularly need to hear more of this kind of idealism."- Richard Nixon, President of the United States (1969-1974), Vice President of the United States (1953-1961)"Your letter of April 26th and the autographed copy of "Let's Sing About America" have been received, and I hope you will accept my sincere thanks for your thoughtful gesture and kind comments."- J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1924-1972)"Your unanimous re-election is indeed a tribute to the sincerity and ability with which you have carried out your duties for so many years."- Earl Warren, Governor of California (1943-1953), Chief Justice of the United States (1953-1969)"I would sincerely appreciate having the benefit of your comments and recommendations on bills pending before me which you have introduced or in which you have an interest... My legislative staff will be most pleased to cooperate with your on any legislative matter."- Goodwin J. Knight, Governor of California (1953-1959), Lieutenant Governor of California (1947-1953)"I was delighted to have a copy of your song, "Let's Sing About America"... Again thank you for the lovely song."- Jacqueline Cochran, WWII commander of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) & first woman to break the sound barrier.
