Book excerpt: Intercropping of grain legumes in cereals is a common feature of cropping systems while, the extent of forage crop production is partly limited due to small landholding and the extent of forage legumes in the mixture is found to be low. Integration of forage legumes in cropping systems through intercropping could be used to optimize land use productivity and improve the crop residue feed quality, besides additional forage production. The studies, showed that integration of forage legumes (lablab and vetch) into maize as an intercropping can increase productivity per unit of land, enable additional forage crop production without significant sacrifice of maize grain and stover yield and improvement of stover feed value. Intercropping of vetch with maize in rows at 50% of its sole seed rate was superior can be used by those farmers, who need to produce additional forage and improve the crude protein of stover without significant sacrifice of maize grain yield.

Book excerpt: The lack of adequate mulch and crop rotations are major constraints to the implementation of conservation agriculture (CA) for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. One possible solution to these constraints is intercropping the main cereal crop with a leguminous cover crop; a technology option that also has the potential to improve the food security and economic productivity of smallholder CA systems. This study used farmer managed research plots to assess the impacts of integrating different grain legumes (cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata), lablab (Lablab purpureus), and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) into maize based CA farming systems in two semi-arid regions of Zimbabwe. The results from one cropping cycle (late 2015 to mid-2016) found that while there was a significant increase in total biomass production when an intercrop was added to the standard, mulched, monocropped CA maize crop at one site, there was no difference at the second (drier) site and that the addition of a legume intercrop reduced, but did not eliminate the need to add supplemental mulch to CA based farming systems. However, the addition of the cowpea intercrop in particular significantly increased the economic profitability and food security impacts of the farming system at both sites (an effect that was more pronounced at the drier site). Overall, this study found that intercropping of legumes into CA based systems had the potential to improve sustainability, productivity and profitability, resilience and food security impacts for the farmers involved in this study.

Book excerpt: This study evaluated the effect of maize-legume intercropping on plant growth, N2 fixation, WUE, C assimilation and grain yield under field conditions in Eswatini. The 15N natural abundance and ureide assay were used to assess N2 fixation in the six test legumes (Bambara groundnut, cowpea, dry bean, groundnut, jack bean and soybean). Instantaneous water-use efficiency was estimated as the ratio of photosynthetic rate to stomatal conductance from gas-exchange measurements while the 13C natural abundance technique was used as an integrated estimate of WUE. The six test legumes obtained 39.06 – 70.19% of their N nutrition from symbiosis based on the 15N natural abundance technique, while the ureide assay showed that the legumes could obtain 16.46 – 55.79% of their N from symbiosis. The amount of N-fixed ranged from 12.66 to 66.57 kg ha-1 . In most instances, a high amount of N-fixed by legumes was accompanied by greater shoot DM and high grain yield, which indicates the importance of the symbiotic process in plant growth and grain yield. Plants that recorded high photosynthetic rates and leaf chlorophyll content also had greater WUE, and higher WUE was also associated with increased shoot DM and improved yields. The low shoot C:N ratio (12.67 – 21.44 g.g-1 ) of test legumes would support rapid decomposition. ERIC-PCR fingerprinting of isolates revealed high genetic diversity among the rhizobial symbionts of groundnut, jack bean and soybean from Eswatini. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA, housekeeping genes (atpD, dnaK, glnll and rpoB) and symbiotic genes (nifH and nodC) showed that the three legumes were nodulated by rhizobia belonging to the genus Bradyrhizobium. The groundnut microsymbionts were closely related to B. arachidis, B. iriomotense and B. canariense, while the jack bean and soybean microsymbionts were closely related to B. pachyrhizi and B. elkanii. Symbiotic characterization of bacterial isolates showed high variation in nodule number, nodule dry matter and shoot DM induced by rhizobia in their homologous hosts, name groundnut, jack bean and soybean. Some of the test isolates elicited higher relative symbiotic efficiency (RSE) than the commercial rhizobial strains, indicating that the indigenous rhizobia present in Eswatini soils can potentially be used in the development of inoculants. Interestingly, isolates which recorded high RSE clustered together in the single gene phylograms of the housekeeping genes and in the 16S rRNA phylogram. The findings of this study will assist in improving grain yield of maize in Eswatini through maize-legume intercropping.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intercropping provides enough scope to include two or more crops simultaneously in same piece of land targeting higher productivity from unit area. Maize, a cereal crop of versatile use, as planted in wide rows offers the opportunity for adoption of intercropping. The intercropping system with maize and legume is beneficial in multifaceted aspects. The success of maize-legume intercropping system largely depends on choice of crops and their maturity, density, and time of planting. Advantage of maize-legume combination of intercropping system is pronounced in the form of higher yield and greater utilization of available resources, benefits in weeds, pests and disease management, fixation of biological nitrogen by legumes and transfer of N to associated maize, insurance against crop failure to small holders, and control of erosion by covering a large extent of ground area. Though maize-legume intercropping system exhibits limitations like less scope of farm mechanization, dependence on more human workforce, and chance of achieving less productivity from maize, the system implies more advantages for small holders in developing countries where human workforce is not a constraint. The chapter has focused on beneficial impacts of maize-legume intercropping system.

Its production in coastal Kenya is however very low due to low inherent soil fertility and high weed infestation.Studies conducted in the region demonstrated the great potential of Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens) for improving soil fertility and for suppressing weeds. However this legume has a depressive effect on maize when it is intercropped with the cereal, likely resulting from interspecies competition for light and soil resources. Modifications of the maize-mucuna intercropping system, with respect to legume plant density and time of under-sowing it to maize, have been suggested as measures for minimizing yield decline in intercropped maize. The book evaluates the impact of adjusting legume plant density and time of under-sowing it to maize on ground cover, light interception, soil moisture, root distribution, nutrient uptake, weed infestation, and the economic and agronomic benefits of the cereal-legume intercropping systems. Methods of determining LER for cereal-forage legume systems have been suggested. Information provided in this book is useful for agricultural research scientists and extension agents.
