Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important contribution to the increasingly topical debate over which development strategies work best for newly industrializing countries. This new edition of a highly successful book, not previously available in paperback, offers a thorough and up-to-date assessment of development theories leading to clear policy prescriptions. There are two completely new chapters on the current debate on the East Asian Model and the different development path taken in Latin America, and on the New Comparative Political Economy. Alschuler demonstrates that a new conceptual framework, incorporating features of dependency theory and world system analysis, is needed in order to capture the complex interaction between multinationals, development strategies and class alliances and their impact on development.

Multinationals play key roles in both the new internationalisation of capital and in the new third world development strategies. In order to capture the complex interaction among multinationals, development strategies and class alliances as well as their impacts on development, Alschuler here offers a new conceptual framework which incorporates features of dependency theory and world system analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congenital malformations are worldwide occurrences striking in every condition of society. These severe physical abnormalities which are present at birth and affecting every part of the body happen more often than usually realized, once in every 33 births. The most common, after heart defects, are those of the neural tube (the brain and spinal cord) which happen in as many as one in every 350 births. They have been noted as curiousities in man and beast throughout recorded history and received great attention in our time by various fields of study, for example, their faulty prenatal development by embryologists, familial patterns by geneticists, causation by environmentalists and variability by population scientists. Attention turned much in recent years to the relation of these malformations to deficiency of a particular dietary ingredient, folic acid, a subject this book analyzes in depth. The greatest conundrum of all, which this latest matter like so much else hinges on, is the amazing fact of the tremendous, almost universal decrease in the frequency of these anomalies since early in the 20th century. The puzzle is ‘What can this downward trend possibly mean?’ and at bottom ‘Whether it is part of a long-term cyclical pattern’. This fascinating biological phenomenon is explored in the book together with various other topics.

Book excerpt: In ovo electroporation is an epoch-making achievement in the study of developmental biology. With this method, experiments can be carried out in gain and loss of function in desired tissue at any desired stage in chick embryos. Introduction of a tetracycline-regulated gene expression system and a transposon system has further extended the potential of the method, making it possible to obtain long-term expression and to turn on and off a gene of interest. It is now applied to mice, aquatic animals, and even to plants for the study of developmental biology and for other purposes. In this book, the application of electroporation in many embryonic tissues and organs is introduced, with some chapters that deal with gene transfer in adults. Sonoporation, another useful tool, using ultrasonic waves instead of electric currents, for gene transfer to mesenchymal tissues is also introduced.
