Allowing your magnificence to shine forth is the process of uncovering your own perfection and realizing, you are your greatest asset. To know the truth of “why things happen” is to live in the active understanding that all events and situations are here for your benefit. Extracting the gifts within life's challenges is the result of seeing beyond “what appears to be,” and seeing through to the higher purpose in all that occurs. The design of Life is inherently wise. No matter how great our challenges, we were born with every tool we need to create our own liberation and transformation. In identifying the on-going architecture that is here to aid us, we begin to taste a sublime freedom. In learning to read that architecture in “real-time,” we begin to live the perfection of who we are, and who we are here to become.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past half century scholars have downplayed the significance of Lorenzo de' Medici (1449–1492), called "the Magnificent," as a patron of the arts. Less wealthy than his grandfather Cosimo, the argument goes, Lorenzo was far more interested in collecting ancient objects of art than in commissioning contemporary art or architecture. His earlier reputation as a patron was said to be largely a construct of humanist exaggeration and partisan deference. Although some recent studies have taken issue with this view, no synthesis of Lorenzo as art patron and art lover has yet emerged. In Lorenzo de' Medici and the Art of Magnificence historian F. W. Kent offers a new look at Lorenzo's relationship to the arts, aesthetics, collecting, and building—especially in the context of his role as the political boss (maestro della bottega) of republican Florence and a leading player in Renaissance Italian diplomacy. As a result of this approach, which pays careful attention to the events of his short but dramatic life, a radically new chronology of Lorenzo's activities as an art patron emerges, revealing them to have been more extensive and creative than previously thought. Kent's Lorenzo was broadly interested in the arts and supported efforts to beautify Florence and the many Medici lands and palaces. His expertise was well regarded by guildsmen and artists, who often turned to him for advice as well as for patronage. Lorenzo himself was educated in the arts by such men, and Kent explores his aesthetic education and taste, taking into account what is known of Lorenzo's patronage of music and manuscripts, and of his own creative work as a major Quattrocento poet. Richly illustrated with photographs of Medici landmarks by Ralph Lieberman, Lorenzo de' Medici and the Art of Magnificence offers a masterful portrait of Lorenzo as a man whose achievements might have rivaled his grandfather's had he not died so young.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating study, Alison Cole explores the distinctive uses of art at the five great secular courts of Naples, Urbino, Ferrara, Mantua, and Milan. The princes who ruled these city-states, vying with each other and with the great European courts, relied on artistic patronage to promote their legitimacy and authority. Major artists and architects, from Mantegna and Pisanello to Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci, were commissioned to design, paint, and sculpt, but also to oversee the court's building projects and entertainments. The courtly styles that emerged from this intricate landscape are examined in detail, as are the complex motivations of ruling lords, consorts, nobles, and their artists. Drawing on the most recent scholarship, Cole presents a vivid picture of the art of this extraordinary period.

Book excerpt: Two of the most important Spanish sculptors of the sixteenth century and their work in Naples can be found here together in an opulent art book. During the period between 1513 and 1518, Bartolome Ordonez and Diego de Siloe from Burgos in Castile made the southern Italian city blossom into one of the most important European centres of marble sculpture. Ordonez and de Siloe were influenced in their art by the work of Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael, and continued to develop their own style: poetical and expressive, it was modelled on the Italian Renaissance mixed with borrowings from Antiquity, but without giving up the Naturalism typical of the Iberian peninsula. As masters of a variety of techniques they found in Naples that the unique marble from Carrara provided a fertile environment for their creative work. Their activities here provided the decisive impetus for the continued development of artistic taste towards the High Renaissance and laid the foundation stone for the Neapolitan School with its main representatives Girolamo Santacroce and Giovanni da Nola. Book excerpt: A funny and haunting new novel from "one of the most acclaimed novelists of her generation" (Los Angeles Times). Hal is a mild-mannered IRS bureaucrat who suspects that his wife is cheating with her younger, more virile coworker. At a drunken dinner party, Hal volunteers to fly to Belize in search of Susan's employer, T.—the protagonist of Lydia Millet's much-lauded novel How the Dead Dream—who has vanished in a tropical jungle, initiating a darkly humorous descent into strange and unpredictable terrain. Salon raved that Millet's "writing is always flawlessly beautiful, reaching for an experience that precedes language itself." In Ghost Lights, she combines her characteristic wit and a sharp eye for the weirdness that governs human (and nonhuman) interactions. With the scathing satire and tender honesty of Sam Lipsyte and a dark, quirky, absurdist style reminiscent of Joy Williams, Millet has created a comic, startling, and surprisingly philosophical story about idealism and disillusionment, home and not home, and the singular, heartbreaking devotion of parenthood.
