Book Synopsis An Introduction to Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena and Quantum Dissipation by : A. O. Caldeira
Download or read book An Introduction to Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena and Quantum Dissipation written by A. O. Caldeira and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing macroscopic quantum phenomena and quantum dissipation, from the phenomenology of magnetism and superconductivity to the presentation of alternative models for quantum dissipation, this book develops the basic material necessary to understand the quantum dynamics of macroscopic variables. Macroscopic quantum phenomena are presented through several examples in magnetism and superconductivity, developed from general phenomenological approaches to each area. Dissipation naturally plays an important role in these phenomena, and therefore semi-empirical models for quantum dissipation are introduced and applied to the study of a few important quantum mechanical effects. The book also discusses the relevance of macroscopic quantum phenomena to the control of meso- or nanoscopic devices, particularly those with potential applications in quantum computation or quantum information. It is ideal for graduate students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Introduction To Superconductivity And High-tc Materials by : Michel Cyrot
Download or read book Introduction To Superconductivity And High-tc Materials written by Michel Cyrot and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992-07-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sets this book apart from others on the introduction to super-conductivity and high-Tc materials is its simple and pragmatic approach. The authors describe all relevant superconducting phenomena and rely on the macroscopic Ginzburg-Landau theory to derive the most important results. Examples are chosen from selected conventional superconductors like NbTi and compared to those of high-Tc materials. The text should be of interest to students and researchers in all branches of science and engineering, with the possible exception of theoretical physicists, who may require a more mathematical approach.

Book Synopsis Thermal Activation and Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena in Superconducting Devices by : Fred Sharifi
Download or read book Thermal Activation and Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena in Superconducting Devices written by Fred Sharifi and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a study of escape from metastable wells in one and two dimensional potentials of superconducting devices. We have measured escape rates due to both thermal activation over the barrier and macroscopic quantum tunneling through the barrier. The measurements were performed for a variety of device parameters, corresponding to different shapes of the potential barrier. We find strong evidence for macroscopic quantum tunneling in both one and two dimensional systems with an escape rate that is very sensitive to the dissipation present in the system. Surprisingly, we have also found a discrepancy between our results and the predictions of Kramers' thermal activation model in certain types of potentials.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals and Frontiers of the Josephson Effect by : Francesco Tafuri
Download or read book Fundamentals and Frontiers of the Josephson Effect written by Francesco Tafuri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of the Josephson effect, a topic of never-ending interest in both fundamental and applied physics. In this volume, world-renowned experts present the unique aspects of the physics of the Josephson effect, resulting from the use of new materials, of hybrid architectures and from the possibility of realizing nanoscale junctions. These new experimental capabilities lead to systems where novel coherent phenomena and transport processes emerge. All this is of great relevance and impact, especially when combined with the didactic approach of the book. The reader will benefit from a general and modern view of coherent phenomena in weakly-coupled superconductors on a macroscopic scale. Topics that have been only recently discussed in specialized papers and in short reviews are described here for the first time and organized in a general framework. An important section of the book is also devoted to applications, with focus on long-term, future applications. In addition to a significant number of illustrations, the book includes numerous tables for comparative studies on technical aspects.

Book Synopsis Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena - Proceedings Of The Workshop by : Terence D Clark
Download or read book Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena - Proceedings Of The Workshop written by Terence D Clark and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1990-12-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroscopic quantum phenomena (MQP) occur in a number of different systems. The majority of MQP research is done with electromagnetic circuits. The occurrence of MQP in alternative systems, the effects of the environment on MQP, the implications of MQP for measurement theory and quantum mechanics are discussed. This proceedings should therefore provide a nice balance of up-to-date results of MQP research, along with discussion of its implications and possible applications.
