Download or read book Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena - Proceedings Of The Workshop written by Terence D Clark and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1990-12-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroscopic quantum phenomena (MQP) occur in a number of different systems. The majority of MQP research is done with electromagnetic circuits. The occurrence of MQP in alternative systems, the effects of the environment on MQP, the implications of MQP for measurement theory and quantum mechanics are discussed. This proceedings should therefore provide a nice balance of up-to-date results of MQP research, along with discussion of its implications and possible applications.

This book was released on 1998-12-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the end of the nineteenth century neared, it was clear to many in the physics community that if only Newton's equations plus Maxwell's equations could be solved adequately, there would really be nothing very new in physics on a fundamental level. Then came relativity and quantum mechanics. As we now approach the end of the twentieth century, it is clear to many in the physics community that if one could adequately solve somebody's gauge field theory (or somebody else's string model), then nothing fundamentally new would ever again enter into physics. To others in the physics community, it is somewhat doubtful that our present physical understanding of the world, especially of quantum mechanics, has reached such a pinnacle. This conference was organized to discuss the present state of affairs in our knowledge, both experimental and theoretical, of the basic tenets of quantum mechanics. Many fields of physics in which quantum mechanics plays a central role were included: (i) atomic and molecular beams; (ii) photon beams; (iii) atomic interference in atom-surface physics and atom wire physics; (iv) Bose-condensed systems; (v) quantum '1/f' noise; (vi) quantum electrodynamics effects in water, colloidal systems and biological systems; (vii) quantum interference in neutrino physics; (viii) periodic-in-time driven quantum systems; (ix) superconducting quantum circuits; and (x) quantum computer circuit elements. The large variety of different topics, all of current importance, allowed for various viewpoints that are usually not present when conferences devoted to narrower topics are held. The cross-fertilization of ideas was greatly appreciated by the participants, and will be of equal interest to the reader of the proceedings.

Download or read book Quantum-like Models And Coherent Effects - Proceedings Of The 27th Workshop Of The Infn Eloisation Project written by Padma Kant Shukla and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-10-17 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decades frontieres in various branches of physics have been investigated, especially for describing coherent effects, with very similar methodologies. In particular, the quantum-like formalism has recently received a great deal of attention for describing a number of 'classical topics', such as charged particle beam optics and dynamics in accelerating machines, plasma physics, nonlinear optics, transmission lines, solid state physics. On the other hand, proper quantum models that have been applied to coherent correlated states, squeezed states, macroscopic quantum coherence in superconductivity, superradiance in condensed matter, stochastic mechanics, have also been recently developed in way fully similar to the one used for quantum-like models. The quantum-like approach seems, therefore, to form a common basis for understanding the observations in many diverse field of science. This volume collects very significant examples of these common methodologies that have been given by various quantum-like approaches for describing numerious physical scenarios in the above branches of physics.

Book Synopsis Quantum Phenomena in Mesoscopic Systems by : B. Altshuler
Download or read book Quantum Phenomena in Mesoscopic Systems written by B. Altshuler and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2004-01-28 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a snapshot of the vision shared by outstanding scientists on the key theoretical and experimental issues in Mesoscopic Physics. Quantum properties of electrons in solid state devices and transport in semiconducting and superconducting low-dimensional systems, are discussed, as well as the basis of quantum computing (entanglement, noise decoherence and read-out). Each chapter collects the material presented at a Varenna School course of last year, by leading experts in the field. The reader gets a flavor, how theorists and experimentalists are paving the way to the physical realization of solid state qubits, the basic units of the new logic and memory elements for quantum processing. He will be surprised in finding that mesoscopic solid state devices, which were invented just yesterday ( think of the Single Electron Transistor, or the Cooper Pair Box) are currently used as charge-sensing applications in the equipment of frontier research laboratories. These devices contribute as probing systems to produce evidence on still unsettled questions in topics like the metal-insulator transition in disordered two dimensional systems, quantum Hall conductance in heterostructures, or Kondo conductance in quantum dots.

Book Synopsis Probing the Meaning of Quantum Mechanics by : Diederik Aerts
Download or read book Probing the Meaning of Quantum Mechanics written by Diederik Aerts and published by World Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an interdisciplinary perspective on one of the most fascinating and important open questions in science: What is quantum mechanics talking about? Quantum theory is perhaps our best confirmed physical theory. However, despite its great empirical effectiveness and the subsequent technological developments that it gave rise to in the 20th century, from the interpretation of the periodic table of elements to CD players, holograms and quantum state teleportation, it stands even today without a universally accepted interpretation. The novelty of the book comes from the multiple viewpoints and subjects investigated by a group of researchers from Europe and North and South America.

Download or read book On Three Levels written by Mark Fannes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a five-day NATO Advanced Research Workshop "On Three Levels, the mathematical physics of micro-, meso-, and macro phenomena," conducted from July 19 to 23 in Leuven, Belgium. The main purpose of the workshop was to bring together and to confront where relevant, classical and quantum approaches in the rigorous study of the relation between the various levels of physical description. The reader will find here discussions on a variety of topics involving a broad range of scales. For the micro-level, contributions are presented on models of reaction-diffusion pro cesses, quantum groups and quantum spin systems. The reports on quantum disorder, the quantum Hall effect, semi-classical approaches of wave mechanics and the random Schrodinger equation can be situated on the meso-level. Discussions on macroscopic quantum effects and large scale fluctuations are dealing with the macroscopic level of description. These three levels are however not independent and emphasis is put on relating these scales of description. This is especially the case for the contributions on kinetic and hydrodynamicallimits, the discussions on large deviations and the strong and weak coupling limits. The advisory board was composed of J.L. Lebowitz, J.T. Lewis and E.H. Lieb. The organizing committee was formed by Ph.A. Martin, G.L. Sewell, E.R. Speer and A.

Book Synopsis The Theory of the Quantum World by : David Gross
Download or read book The Theory of the Quantum World written by David Gross and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since 1911, the Solvay Conferences have shaped modern physics. The 25th edition held in October 2011 in Brussels and chaired by David Gross continued this tradition and celebrated the first centennial of this illustrious series of conferences. The development and applications of quantum mechanics have always been the main threads in the history of the Solvay Conferences, hence the 25th Solvay conference gathered many of the leading figures working on a wide variety of profound problems in physics where quantum mechanical effects play a central role. The conference addressed some of the most pressing open questions in the field of physics. The proceedings contain the OC rapporteur talksOCO which give a broad overview with unique insights by distinguished and renowned scientists. These lectures cover the seven sessions: OC History and ReflectionsOCO, OC Foundations of Quantum Mechanics and Quantum ComputationOCO, OC Control of Quantum SystemsOCO, OC Quantum Condensed MatterOCO, OC Particles and FieldsOCO, OC Quantum Gravity and String TheoryOCO and it ended with a general discussion attempting to arrive at a synthesis. In the Solvay tradition, the proceedings also include the prepared comments to the rapporteur talks. The discussions among the participants OCo some of which quite lively and involving dramatically divergent points of view OCo have been carefully edited and are reproduced in full.
