Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I compare the Canon EFS 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM to the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens. Why am I comparing these two lenses? Because I own both and wanted to see which lens produced the better results. Sure, I could say that the more expensive lens produces the best results, but is that accurate? Does that opinion match the data in a side-by-side comparison. Since my telephoto lens also takes photos at 100mm, which is the better choice if you have to choose between one or the other? When out photographing insects at a local botanical garden or on trails, I like to use my macro lens. It is awesome for close-up photography and showing details. However, I can't take any wide-angle shots of outdoor scenery or zoom on deer that happen to appear nearby or birds that land on a branch or a raccoon that wanders toward the creek. And it has an incredible motor inside that makes noise. Yep, it never shuts up. So, get used to the noise if you buy this lens. I like my telephoto lens because it can be used in a variety of scenes (not just searching for bugs), and I don't have to get so close to insects to get their photo. I can take a photo of an ant on a leaf, and turn around and take a photo of a deer that just walked into a clearing. It's cheaper and quite versatile. But can its images of spiders or dragonflies match those of the macro lens? Well, look on the cover. Can you tell which one was taken by the macro lens (more expensive) and which was taken by the telephoto (cheaper) lens? I doubt it. For most images, I don't think that you'll find much of a difference, but don't take my word for it. Look through this book and decide for yourself. Book excerpt: Close-up and macro photography is one of the most popular types of photography among digital photographers today. After the big-range zoom, a macro lens is typically one of the next purchases considered by serious outdoor photographers and amateur photographers looking for close-up capability in all zoom lenses. Yet hobbyist photographers struggle. Many macro shots just don’t make it–not sharp, confusing backgrounds, muddled compositions, misplaced sharpness, and distracting light. Even more advanced photographers find challenges working with depth of field, dealing with light, and using different focal lengths up close. You need a book that goes beyond the camera manuals to teach you how to select and use various lenses to take great macro shots. This guide by pro photographer Rob Sheppard will help you conquer the fundamentals and capture stunning pictures. Sheppard starts with the basics. He discusses factors such as depth of field, perspective, and compression and which types of lenses are right for your style of shooting. You will have a better understanding of your equipment and understand your choices for investing in lenses. Beautifully illustrated with large, compelling photos, this book teaches you how to take control of your photography to get the image you want every time you pick up the camera.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Despite the explosion of new technology in recent years, photography is still based on certain unalterable principles involving light and lenses. The Complete Book of Photographic Lenses examines every type of lens for every format, from how to choose it to how to use it. Joseph Meehan describes the basic design and operation of standard, wide-angle, telephoto, and specialized lenses, and gives an overview of their history. For example, Meehan explains that the versatile standard lens is a fine choice for both 3/4-length and tighter profile shots. He also shows why wide-angle lenses are ideal for vistas and explains how fisheye lenses exaggerate foreground objects. The corresponding illustrations--beautiful photographs and detailed diagrams--clarify each concept." "Next, closeup and enlarging lenses are described, including specifics on macro zooms, extension tubes, bellows, diopters, and copy lenses. The section on telephoto lenses contains extensive information on film formats, aspect ratios, mirror lenses, tele-zooms, angle of view , compression, selective focus, and depth of field. The chapter on wide-angle lenses covers various wide-angle focal lengths, fisheye lenses, wide-angle zooms, perspective control, and metering problems." "Best of all, this book goes beyond fundamentals to explore how lens selection affects the content and composition of your photographs. Meehan discusses how to successfully frame pictures and how to compose action shots, and shows how different focal lengths produce different interpretations of a subject. The book concludes with information on lens testing and aberrations, special-purpose lenses (such as the soft-focus lens), filters, lens accessories, tripods and other stabilizing devices, and projector screens." "The Complete Book of Photographic Lenses is so comprehensive that it will never go out of date. This invaluable resource will help photographers who use 35mm, medium-format, large format, and panoramic cameras make the best lens choices for their creative efforts."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
