These eight designs by Julie Bohringer are amazingly fast to finish with fused and Blanket-Stitched appliqué and are (mostly) machine embroidered. In fact, the Blanket Stitches double as quilting because they're worked through all the quilt layers. Once your appliqués are stitched, just add the binding and hang your little quilt on the wall! Seven projects are 10.5" x 29" and one (Waves of Glory) is 8" x 30". This refreshing approach to appliqué is also a great way for beginners to discover the rewarding hobbies of sewing and quilting. Stapled; 52 pages. 8 designs to appliqué and quilt in one step: Better by the Bushel (apples), Autumn Blaze (fall leaves), Season of Peace (poinsettia), O Christmas Tree (tree), Hot Stuff (chile peppers), Ride 'Em Cowboy (rodeo), Tools of the Trade (teaching), and Waves of Glory (American flag).

Book excerpt: The traditional textiles of Central Asia are unknown treasures. Straddling the legendary Silk Road, this vast region stretches from Russia in the west to China in the east. Whether nomadic or sedentary, its peoples created textiles for every aspect of their way of life, from ceremonial objects marking rites of passage, to everyday garments, to practical items for the home. There were suzanis for the marriage bed; prayer mats; patchwork quilts; bridal ensembles; bags for tea, scissors, and mirrors; lovingly embroidered hats and bibs; and robes of every color and pattern. Author Susan Meller has spent years assembling the 590 textiles illustrated in this book. She documents their history, use, and meaning through archival photographs and fascinating travelers’ narratives spanning many centuries. Her book will be a revelation to designers, collectors, students of Central Asia, and travelers to the region. Silk and Cotton is destined to become a classic.

Book excerpt: From Oaxacan wood carvings to dessert kitchens in provincial France, Critical Craft presents thirteen ethnographies which examine what defines and makes ‘craft’ in a wide variety of practices from around the world. Challenging the conventional understanding of craft as a survival, a revival, or something that resists capitalism, the book turns instead to the designers, DIY enthusiasts, traditional artisans, and technical programmers who consider their labor to be craft, in order to comprehend how they make sense of it. The authors’ ethnographic studies focus on the individuals and communities who claim a practice as their own, bypassing the question of craft survival to ask how and why activities termed craft are mobilized and reproduced. Moving beyond regional studies of heritage artisanship, the authors suggest that ideas of craft are by definition part of a larger cosmopolitan dialogue of power and identity. By paying careful attention to these sometimes conflicting voices, this collection shows that there is great flexibility in terms of which activities are labelled ‘craft’. In fact, there are many related ideas of craft and these shape distinct engagements with materials, people, and the economy. Case studies from countries including Mexico, Nigeria, India, Taiwan, the Philippines, and France draw together evidence based on linguistics, microsociology, and participant observation to explore the shifting terrain on which those engaged in craft are operating. What emerges is a fascinating picture which shows how claims about craft are an integral part of contemporary global change.
