Book Synopsis A History of Wine in America, Volume 1 by : Thomas Pinney
Download or read book A History of Wine in America, Volume 1 written by Thomas Pinney and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-09-17 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vikings called North America "Vinland," the land of wine. Giovanni de Verrazzano, the Italian explorer who first described the grapes of the New World, was sure that "they would yield excellent wines." And when the English settlers found grapes growing so thickly that they covered the ground down to the very seashore, they concluded that "in all the world the like abundance is not to be found." Thus, from the very beginning the promise of America was, in part, the alluring promise of wine. How that promise was repeatedly baffled, how its realization was gradually begun, and how at last it has been triumphantly fulfilled is the story told in this book. It is a story that touches on nearly every section of the United States and includes the whole range of American society from the founders to the latest immigrants. Germans in Pennsylvania, Swiss in Georgia, Minorcans in Florida, Italians in Arkansas, French in Kansas, Chinese in California—all contributed to the domestication of Bacchus in the New World. So too did innumerable individuals, institutions, and organizations. Prominent politicians, obscure farmers, eager amateurs, sober scientists: these and all the other kinds and conditions of American men and women figure in the story. The history of wine in America is, in many ways, the history of American origins and of American enterprise in microcosm. While much of that history has been lost to sight, especially after Prohibition, the recovery of the record has been the goal of many investigators over the years, and the results are here brought together for the first time. In print in its entirety for the first time, A History of Wine in America is the most comprehensive account of winemaking in the United States, from the Norse discovery of native grapes in 1001 A.D., through Prohibition, and up to the present expansion of winemaking in every state.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lyle Family: The Ancestry and Posterity of Matthew, John, Daniel and Samuel Lyle, Pioneer Settlers in Virginia The aim of this book is to preserve to posterity facts of interest per taining to the Lyle family. That the book has errors is more than probable, since much of the information received in correspondence was variable in dates and in the spelling of proper names. For such errors as appear, the explanation lies in my telling the tale as told to me. It has taken years to gather what the book contains. But a few years of delay would have made almost impossible of discovery many of the facts that are presented. In successful effort, in obliging pos. Book Synopsis Islam in Education in European Countries. Pedagogical Concepts and Empirical Findings by : Aurora Alvarez Veinguer
Download or read book Islam in Education in European Countries. Pedagogical Concepts and Empirical Findings written by Aurora Alvarez Veinguer and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations between Muslims and the public education systems of Europe are often characterised by tensions. There is often still a perceived incompatibility between the claims of individual Muslims or Muslim communities on the one hand and the aims of public education in Europe on the other. The relatively recent presence of Islam in much of Europe, the internal diversity of Muslim communities, the lack of a centralized, hierarchical church-like structure – different arguments are used to justify such a discriminatory treatment of one of the largest faith communities in Europe. Nevertheless, as this book aims to illustrate, there are already rich and diverse experiences throughout Europe of how to integrate Islam into the national and regional school systems, particularly in primary, but also in secondary education. Accordingly, this book provides some analyses of the ways in which Islam is integrated in education in certain regions of Spain, the Netherlands, France and England. These analyses are paralleled by empirical findings concerning the role of religion in the life of young Muslims, their views concerning religion in school, and the impact of religion in education and society in Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, France and England.
Book Synopsis Nazis in the Holy Land 1933-1948 by : Heidemarie Wawrzyn
Download or read book Nazis in the Holy Land 1933-1948 written by Heidemarie Wawrzyn and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young Germans marched through Haifa shouting „Heil Hitler!“ and Swastika flags were hoisted at the German consulates in Mandatory Palestine. It was in November 1931 when a non-Jewish German made the initial contact with Nazi officials in Germany that led to the establishment of a miniature Third Reich with local NS groups, Hitler Youth program, and associations for women, teachers, and others in Palestine. Approximately 33% of all Palestine-Germans (Palästina-Deutsche) participated in the NS movement. Until today no extensive research written in English has been done on this bizarre „footnote“ in history. While previous publications in German mainly concentrated on the members of the Temple Society, this work includes Protestant and Catholic Germans as well. It focuses on the relationship of Palästina-Deutsche with local Arabs and Jews. It covers the period of 1933 to 1948 as well as the years between the establishing of the State of Israel and the departure of the last group of Germans in 1950. At the end of the book, the reader will find a list with more than seven hundred names of those who joined the NS groups.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable study develops a theoretical critique of contemporary discourses on secularism and assimilation, arguing that the perspective of assimilating distinct religious minorities by incorporating them into a secular and supposedly neutral public sphere may be self-subverting. To flesh out this insight, Jansen draws on the paradoxes of assi
