Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop the basic theory of root systems $R$ in a real vector space $X$ which are defined in analogy to the usual finite root systems, except that finiteness is replaced by local finiteness: the intersection of $R$ with every finite-dimensional subspace of $X$ is finite. The main topics are Weyl groups, parabolic subsets and positive systems, weights, and gradings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph develops a unified theory of Steinberg groups, independent of matrix representations, based on the theory of Jordan pairs and the theory of 3-graded locally finite root systems. The development of this approach occurs over six chapters, progressing from groups with commutator relations and their Steinberg groups, then on to Jordan pairs, 3-graded locally finite root systems, and groups associated with Jordan pairs graded by root systems, before exploring the volume's main focus: the definition of the Steinberg group of a root graded Jordan pair by a small set of relations, and its central closedness. Several original concepts, such as the notions of Jordan graphs and Weyl elements, provide readers with the necessary tools from combinatorics and group theory. Steinberg Groups for Jordan Pairs is ideal for PhD students and researchers in the fields of elementary groups, Steinberg groups, Jordan algebras, and Jordan pairs. By adopting a unified approach, anybody interested in this area who seeks an alternative to case-by-case arguments and explicit matrix calculations will find this book essential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to Hopf algebras in braided monoidal categories with applications to Hopf algebras in the usual sense. The main goal of the book is to present from scratch and with complete proofs the theory of Nichols algebras (or quantum symmetric algebras) and the surprising relationship between Nichols algebras and generalized root systems. In general, Nichols algebras are not classified by Cartan graphs and their root systems. However, extending partial results in the literature, the authors were able to associate a Cartan graph to a large class of Nichols algebras. This allows them to determine the structure of right coideal subalgebras of Nichols systems which generalize Nichols algebras. As applications of these results, the book contains a classification of right coideal subalgebras of quantum groups and of the small quantum groups, and a proof of the existence of PBW-bases that does not involve case by case considerations. The authors also include short chapter summaries at the beginning of each chapter and historical notes at the end of each chapter. The theory of Cartan graphs, Weyl groupoids, and generalized root systems appears here for the first time in a book form. Hence, the book serves as an introduction to the modern classification theory of pointed Hopf algebras for advanced graduate students and researchers working in categorial aspects and classification theory of Hopf algebras and their generalization.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive treatise on the theory and applications of moment functions in image analysis. Moment functions are widely used in various realms of computer vision and image processing. Numerous algorithms and techniques have been developed using image moments, in the areas of pattern recognition, object identification, three-dimensional object pose estimation, robot sensing, image coding and reconstruction. This book provides a compilation of the theoretical aspects related to different types of moment functions, and their applications in the above areas. The book is organized into two parts. The first part discusses the fundamental concepts behind important moments such as geometric moments, complex moments, Legendre moments, Zernike moments, and moment tensors. Most of the commonly used properties of moment functions and the mathematical framework for the derivation of basic theorems and results are discussed in detail. This includes the derivation of moment invariants, implementation aspects of moments, transform properties, and fast methods for computing the moment functions for both binary and gray-level images. The second part presents the key application areas of moments such as pattern recognition, object identification, image-based pose estimation, edge detection, clustering, segmentation, coding and reconstruction. Important algorithms in each of these areas are discussed. A comprehensive list of bibliographical references on image moments is also included.

Book excerpt: Originating from graduate topics courses given by the first author, this book functions as a unique text-monograph hybrid that bridges a traditional graduate course to research level representation theory. The exposition includes an introduction to the subject, some highlights of the theory and recent results in the field, and is therefore appropriate for advanced graduate students entering the field as well as research mathematicians wishing to expand their knowledge. The mathematical background required varies from chapter to chapter, but a standard course on Lie algebras and their representations, along with some knowledge of homological algebra, is necessary. Basic algebraic geometry and sheaf cohomology are needed for Chapter 10. Exercises of various levels of difficulty are interlaced throughout the text to add depth to topical comprehension. The unifying theme of this book is the structure and representation theory of infinite-dimensional locally reductive Lie algebras and superalgebras. Chapters 1-6 are foundational; each of the last 4 chapters presents a self-contained study of a specialized topic within the larger field. Lie superalgebras and flag supermanifolds are discussed in Chapters 3, 7, and 10, and may be skipped by the reader.

Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to prove a functional equation for a local zeta function attached to the minimal spherical series for a class of real reductive symmetric spaces. These symmetric spaces are obtained as follows. We consider a graded simple real Lie algebra $\widetilde{\mathfrak g}$ of the form $\widetilde{\mathfrak g}=V^-\oplus \mathfrak g\oplus V^+$, where $[\mathfrak g,V^+]\subset V^+$, $[\mathfrak g,V^-]\subset V^-$ and $[V^-,V^+]\subset \mathfrak g$. If the graded algebra is regular, then a suitable group $G$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ has a finite number of open orbits in $V^+$, each of them is a realization of a symmetric space $G\slash H_p$.The functional equation gives a matrix relation between the local zeta functions associated to $H_p$-invariant distributions vectors for the same minimal spherical representation of $G$. This is a generalization of the functional equation obtained by Godement} and Jacquet for the local zeta function attached to a coefficient of a representation of $GL(n,\mathbb R)$.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is about extended affine Lie algebras (EALA's) and their root systems. EALA's were introduced by Hoegh-Krohn and Torresani under the name irreducible quasi-simple Lie algebras. The major objective is to develop enough theory to provide a firm foundation for further study of EALA's. The first chapter of the paper is devoted to establishing some basic structure theory. It includes a proof of the fact that, as conjectured by Kac, the invariant symmetric bilinear form on an EALA can be scaled so that its restriction to the real span of the root system is positive semi-definite. The second chapter studies extended affine root systems (EARS) which are an axiomatized version of the root systems arising from EALA's. The concept of a semilattice is used to give a complete description of EARS. In the final chapter, a number of new examples of extended affine Lie algebras are given. The concluding appendix contains an axiomatic characterization of the nonisotropic roots in an EARS in a more general context than the one used in the rest of the paper. Features: Provides a foundation for the study of an important class of Lie algebras that generalizes the class of affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras Includes material on Lie algebras and on root systems that can be read independently.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir is both a contribution to the theory of Borel equivalence relations, considered up to Borel reducibility, and measure preserving group actions considered up to orbit equivalence. Here $E$ is said to be Borel reducible to $F$ if there is a Borel function $f$ with $x E y$ if and only if $f(x) F f(y)$. Moreover, $E$ is orbit equivalent to $F$ if the respective measure spaces equipped with the extra structure provided by the equivalence relations are almost everywhere isomorphic. We consider product groups acting ergodically and by measure preserving transformations on standard Borel probability spaces. In general terms, the basic parts of the monograph show that if the groups involved have a suitable notion of 'boundary' (we make this precise with the definition of near hyperbolic), then one orbit equivalence relation can only be Borel reduced to another if there is some kind of algebraic resemblance between the product groups and coupling of the action. This also has consequence for orbit equivalence. In the case that the original equivalence relations do not have non-trivial almost invariant sets, the techniques lead to relative ergodicity results. An equivalence relation $E$ is said to be relatively ergodic to $F$ if any $f$ with $xEy \Rightarrow f(x) F f(y)$ has $[f(x)]_F$ constant almost everywhere. This underlying collection of lemmas and structural theorems is employed in a number of different ways. In the later parts of the paper, we give applications of the theory to specific cases of product groups. In particular, we catalog the actions of products of the free group and obtain additional rigidity theorems and relative ergodicity results in this context. There is a rather long series of appendices, whose primary goal is to give the reader a comprehensive account of the basic techniques. But included here are also some new results. For instance, we show that the Furstenberg-Zimmer lemma on cocycles from amenable groups fails with respect to Baire category, and use this to answer a question of Weiss. We also present a different proof that $F_2$ has the Haagerup approximation property.

Book excerpt: In this memoir, we prove that the universal Teichmuller space $T(1)$ carries a new structure of a complex Hilbert manifold and show that the connected component of the identity of $T(1)$ -- the Hilbert submanifold $T {0 (1)$ -- is a topological group. We define a Weil-Petersson metric on $T(1)$ by Hilbert space inner products on tangent spaces, compute its Riemann curvature tensor, and show that $T(1)$ is a Kahler-Einstein manifold with negative Ricci and sectional curvatures. We introduce and compute Mumford-Miller-Morita characteristic forms for the vertical tangent bundle of the universal Teichmuller curve fibration over the universal Teichmuller space. As an application, we derive Wolpert curvature formulas for the finite-dimensional Teichmuller spaces from the formulas for the universal Teichmuller space. We study in detail the Hilbert manifold structure on $T {0 (1)$ and characterize points on $T {0 (1)$ in terms of Bers and pre-Bers embeddings by proving that the Grunsky operators $B {1 $ and The results of this memoir were presented in our e-prints: Weil-Petersson metric on the universal Teichmuller space I.
