Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space agencies are now realizing that much of what has previously been achieved using hugely complex and costly single platform projects—large unmanned and manned satellites (including the present International Space Station)—can be replaced by a number of smaller satellites networked together. The key challenge of this approach, namely ensuring the proper formation flying of multiple craft, is the topic of this second volume in Elsevier’s Astrodynamics Series, Spacecraft Formation Flying: Dynamics, control and navigation. In this unique text, authors Alfriend et al. provide a coherent discussion of spacecraft relative motion, both in the unperturbed and perturbed settings, explain the main control approaches for regulating relative satellite dynamics, using both impulsive and continuous maneuvers, and present the main constituents required for relative navigation. The early chapters provide a foundation upon which later discussions are built, making this a complete, standalone offering. Intended for graduate students, professors and academic researchers in the fields of aerospace and mechanical engineering, mathematics, astronomy and astrophysics, Spacecraft Formation Flying is a technical yet accessible, forward-thinking guide to this critical area of astrodynamics. The first book dedicated to spacecraft formation flying, written by leading researchers and professors in the field Develops the theory from an astrodynamical viewpoint, emphasizing modeling, control and navigation of formation flying satellites on Earth orbits Examples used to illustrate the main developments, with a sample simulation of a formation flying mission included to illustrate high fidelity modeling, control and relative navigation

Book excerpt: Small satellite technology is opening up a new era in space exploration offering reduced cost of launch and maintenance, operational flexibility with on-orbit reconfiguration, redundancy etc. The true power of such missions can be harnessed only from close and precise formation flying of satellites. Formation flying missions support diverse application areas such as reconnaissance, remote sensing, solar observatory, deep space observatories, etc. A key component involved in formation flying is the guidance algorithm that should account for system nonlinearities and unknown disturbances. The main focus of this book is to present various nonlinear optimal control and adaptive guidance ideas to ensure precise close formation flying in presence of such difficulties. In addition to in-depth discussion of the relevant topics, MATLAB program files for the results included are also provided for the benefit of the readers. Since this book has concise information about the various guidance techniques, it will be useful reference for researchers and practising engineers in the space field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spacecraft formation flying is an enabling technology and attractive alternative to single-spacecraft systems. In addition to being reliable and upgradable, spacecraft formations will provide a means of performing a variety of tasks and missions that cannot be performed by a single satellite. Associated with spacecraft formations are a number of new and challenging problems in the area of spacecraft dynamics and control. Active control systems are required to maintain relative configurations to the accuracies demanded by tasks such as high resolution Earth and deep space imaging. In formation missions involving micro-satellites, fuel efficiency is of paramount importance. This study presents a number of control laws well suited to micro-satellite scale formation missions. The control laws are derived using control techniques such as linear quadratic regulator design, feedback linearization and disturbance accommodation to bring fuel requirements into a range feasible for micro-satellite missions. The CanX-4/5 mission, developed by the Space Flight Laboratory at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, is of particular interest. A control law that accommodates propulsion and attitude subsystem limitations associated with the CanX-4/5 system is presented, along with an extensive body of simulation data to aid in the mission design process.

Book excerpt: The novel concept of multiple spacecraft formation flying as a substitute for a single large vehicle will enhance future space mission performance. The benefits of a spacecraft formation include more cost effective synthetic aperture radar for observations, "graceful degradation" of the formation, flexibility of the satellites altering their roles, reduction of cost owing to the reduction of mass launched into orbit etc. A significant challenge in the domain of control design is to contrive a formation maintenance controller that will enable the member spacecrafts to maintain a desired relative orbit with minimal propellant expenditure. This thesis examines linear and nonlinear LEO formation control methodologies, one of each type, with the aim of evaluating them from a propellant budget, thrust level and error dynamics standpoint. A Linear Quadratic Regulator has been applied on $J_{2}$-perturbed Clohessy-Wiltshire dynamics. In order to remove the restriction of the applicability of Cartesian local vertical local horrizontal frame based control laws to only circular leader orbits, a sliding mode controller acting on a full nonlinear dynamical model has been implemented. This work also studies the effects of leader orbit eccentricity, inclination and formation radius on formation keeping fuel demand and tracking error. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the suitability of the control laws considered and various recommendations made.

Not the stuff of science-fiction, SFF involves flying multiple small satellites together, to deliver benefits which far outweigh a single larger craft or space station. The first autonomous formation flying earth science mission was in 196 and NASA now has 35 SFF mission sets. By networking several smaller and cheaper craft, scientists can make simultaneous measurements that enable higher resolution astronomical imagery, provide robust and fault-tolerant spacecraft system architectures, and enable complex earth science and space science networks dispersed over clusters of satellites in space. This is the first book to introduce and explore SFF. It is a topic of enormous importance to aerospace engineers, astrodynamicists, satellite engineers, astronomers, physicists, and applied mathematicions. This book provides a complete introduction to the subject and is supported by graduate level student exercises plus Matlab and Maple code sets for running SFF simulations. * The first book dedicated to spacecraft formation flying which is the enabling element of distributed spacecraft systems * Written by the leading researchers and teachers in the field; perfect for research and graduate students * Accompanied by Matlab and Maple code sets and exercises for graduate level students of aerospace science, astrodynamics and orbital mechanics.

Book excerpt: Aimed at students, faculty and professionals in the aerospace field, this book provides practical information on the development, analysis, and control of a single and/or multiple spacecraft in space. This book is divided into two major sections: single and multiple satellite motion. The first section analyses the orbital mechanics, orbital perturbations, and attitude dynamics of a single satellite around the Earth. Using the knowledge of a single satellite motion, the translation of a group of satellites called formation flying or constellation is explained. Formation flying has been one of the main research topics over the last few years and this book explains different control approaches to control the satellite attitude motion and/or to maintain the constellation together. The control schemes are explained in the discrete domain such that it can be easily implemented on the computer on board the satellite. The key objective of this book is to show the reader the practical and the implementation process in the discrete domain. Explains the orbital motion and principal perturbations affecting the satellite Uses the Ares V rocket as an example to explain the attitude motion of a space vehicle Presents the practical approach for different control actuators that can be used in a satellite

Book excerpt: This book systematically describes the concepts and principles for multi-satellite relative motion, passive and near passive formation designs, trajectory planning and control for fuel optimal formation maneuvers, and formation flying maintenance control design. As such, it provides a sound foundation for researchers and engineers in this field to develop further theories and pursue their implementations. Though satellite formation flying is widely considered to be a major advance in space technology, there are few systematic treatments of the topic in the literature. Addressing that gap, the book offers a valuable resource for academics, researchers, postgraduate students and practitioners in the field of satellite science and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here a leading researcher provides a comprehensive treatment of the design of automatic control logic for spacecraft and aircraft. In this book Arthur Bryson describes the linear-quadratic-regulator (LQR) method of feedback control synthesis, which coordinates multiple controls, producing graceful maneuvers comparable to those of an expert pilot. The first half of the work is about attitude control of rigid and flexible spacecraft using momentum wheels, spin, fixed thrusters, and gimbaled engines. Guidance for nearly circular orbits is discussed. The second half is about aircraft attitude and flight path control. This section discusses autopilot designs for cruise, climb-descent, coordinated turns, and automatic landing. One chapter deals with controlling helicopters near hover, and another offers an introduction to the stabilization of aeroelastic instabilities. Throughout the book there is a strong emphasis on the mathematical modeling necessary for designing a good feedback control system. The appendixes summarize analysis of linear dynamic systems, synthesis of analog and digital feedback control, simulation, and modeling of flexible vehicles.

Book excerpt: A growing interest in formation flying satellites demands development and analysis of control and estimation algorithms for station-keeping and formation maneuvering. This thesis discusses the development of a discrete linear-quadratic- regulator control algorithm for formations in the vicinity of the L2 sun-earth libration point. The development of an appropriate Kalman filter is included as well. Simulations are created for the analysis of the station-keeping and various formation maneuvers of the Stellar Imager mission. The simulations provide tracking error, estimation error, and control effort results. From the control effort, useful design parameters such as AV and propellant mass are determined. For formation maneuvering, the drone spacecraft track to within 4 meters of their desired position and within 1.3 millimeters per second of their desired zero velocity. The filter, with few exceptions, keeps the estimation errors within their three-sigma values. Without noise, the controller performs extremely well, with the drones tracking to within several micrometers. Bach drone uses around 1 to 2 grams of propellant per maneuver, depending on the circumstances.
