Drawing on historical records and personal accounts, Glover offers a fascinating look at the intersection of military justice and presidential power during a time of war, shedding new light on Lincoln's legacy as a wartime leader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Sleeping Sentinel of Vermont: Illustrated With a Daguerreotype, Documents, and Wood-Engravings of the Period Scott stories of very recent authorship: one the product of credulity, the other the product of skepticism at its worst. It cannot justly be claimed, therefore, that the question is settled. In presenting this material concerning the pardon of the Sleeping Sentinel I have no desire to start another contro versy. At the same time, I believe that the very fact that considerable bitterness as well as prejudice entered into the late controversy on both sides should offer an excuse of some validity, at least, for a new evaluation of evidence, now that the smoke Of the battle has cleared away. Moreover, some very interesting and important material bearing on the sub jcet, which was unknown to Doctor Barton and all the other participants in the controversy, has recently been redis covered. In the sincere desire, therefore, to bring order out of chaos and to determine whether perchance there may be two grains of wheat hid in two bushels of chaff, I propose to examine the question from every possible point of view. To this end I shall present all available source material, call attention to the leading versions of the pardon story, and re view the late controversy in its various phases. In brief, I propose to examine everything and suppress nothing which tends to throw light on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War brought many forms of upheaval to America, not only in waking hours but also in the dark of night. Sleeplessness plagued the Union and Confederate armies, and dreams of war glided through the minds of Americans in both the North and South. Sometimes their nightly visions brought the horrors of the conflict vividly to life. But for others, nighttime was an escape from the hard realities of life and death in wartime. In this innovative new study, Jonathan W. White explores what dreams meant to Civil War–era Americans and what their dreams reveal about their experiences during the war. He shows how Americans grappled with their fears, desires, and struggles while they slept, and how their dreams helped them make sense of the confusion, despair, and loneliness that engulfed them. White takes readers into the deepest, darkest, and most intimate places of the Civil War, connecting the emotional experiences of soldiers and civilians to the broader history of the conflict, confirming what poets have known for centuries: there are some truths that are only revealed in the world of darkness.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini's compelling historical novel unveils the private lives of Abraham and Mary Lincoln through the perspective of the First Lady's most trusted confidante and friend, her dressmaker, Elizabeth Keckley. In a life that spanned nearly a century and witnessed some of the most momentous events in American history, Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley was born a slave. A gifted seamstress, she earned her freedom by the skill of her needle, and won the friendship of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln by her devotion. A sweeping historical novel, Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker illuminates the extraordinary relationship the two women shared, beginning in the hallowed halls of the White House during the trials of the Civil War and enduring almost, but not quite, to the end of Mrs. Lincoln's days.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 15, 1837, a "long, gawky" Abraham Lincoln walked into Joshua Speed's dry-goods store in Springfield, Illinois, and asked what it would cost to buy the materials for a bed. Speed said seventeen dollars, which Lincoln didn't have. He asked for a loan to cover that amount until Christmas. Speed was taken with his visitor, but, as he said later, "I never saw so gloomy and melancholy a face." Speed suggested Lincoln stay with him in a room over his store for free and share his large double bed. What began would become one of the most important friendships in American history. Speed was Lincoln's closest confidant, offering him invaluable support after the death of his first love, Ann Rutledge, and during his rocky courtship of Mary Todd. Lincoln needed Speed for guidance, support, and empathy. Your Friend Forever, A. Lincoln is a rich analysis of a relationship that was both a model of male friendship and a specific dynamic between two brilliant but fascinatingly flawed men who played off each other's strengths and weaknesses to launch themselves in love and life. Their friendship resolves important questions about Lincoln's early years and adds significant psychological depth to our understanding of our sixteenth president.

Was John Wilkes Booth a crazed loner acting out of revenge, or was he the key player in a wide conspiracy aimed at removing the one man who had crushed the Confederacy's dream of independence? Edward Steers Jr. crafts an intimate, engaging narrative of the events leading to Lincoln's death and the political, judicial, and cultural aftermaths of his assassination.

Book excerpt: In early 1861, as he prepared to leave his home in Springfield, Illinois, to move into the White House, Abraham Lincoln faced many momentous tasks, but none he dreaded more than telling his two youngest sons, Willie and Tad, that the family's beloved pet dog, Fido, would not be accompanying them to Washington. Lincoln, who had adopted Fido about five years earlier, was afraid the skittish dog wouldn't survive the long rail journey, so he decided to leave the mutt behind with friends in Springfield. Fido had been by Lincoln's side as the prairie lawyer rose from obscurity to the presidency, sometimes carrying bundles of letters from the post office as Lincoln walked the streets of the state capital. Abe & Fido: Lincoln's Love of Animals and the Touching Story of His Favorite Canine Companion tells the story of two friends, an unlikely tandem who each became famous and died prematurely. The book also explores the everyday life of Springfield in the years leading up to the Civil War, as well as Lincoln's sometimes radical views on animal welfare, and how they shaped his life and his presidency. It's the story of a master and his dog, living through historic, tumultuous times. Matthew Algeo is the author of Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure, The President Is a Sick Man, Pedestrianism, and Last Team Standing. An award-winning journalist, Algeo has reported from four continents, and his stories have appeared on public radio's All Things Considered, Marketplace, and Morning Edition.
