Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Philip Neri is one of the best-loved saints of all time. Known as the ಘApostle of Rome', he set in motion a great renewal of Christianity at the heart of the Church's capital city during the 1500's. St. Philip's foundation of the Oratory began by stimulating young laymen to conversion, prayer, and apostolic works, and through them gradually brought about a reform of the entire Church, at all levels of society. St. Philip inspired many through his words, his miracles and his spiritual gifts, which show many similarities with other great saints such as Padre Pio and St. John Vianney. This account of Philip's life, written by his disciple Antonio Gallonio soon after the saint's death, captures well his holy zeal for God's work in the face of a corrupt and decadent Rome; his great sense of humor, which he would often use to remind people of hidden spiritual realities; and the many extraordinary miracles and conversions wrought by St. Philip both during his lifetime and after his death. This is the first ever English translation of the affectionate biography, published originally in Latin in the Jubilee Year 1600. Unusually for the time, it was written in chronological order; it also bears the original footnotes by Gallonio, in which he refers to eyewitnesses and makes comparisons with the lives of canonized saints, intending thereby to assist in the promotion of Philip's cause for elevation to the altars. Additional notes and a comprehensive index make this a most interesting and useful book for devotees of St. Philip, as well as a very readable introduction to the saint for those who do not yet know him.

Book excerpt: St Philip Neri (1515-1595) is known as the Apostle of Rome and the founder of the Congregation of the Oratory. This translation of his maxims and sayings is the work of Fr Faber, first published in 1847. His Maxims emphasise the constant teaching of the masters of the spiritual life, going back to the Desert Fathers (themselves always the favourite reading of St Philip). Full of good sense, they present us with an essential spirituality, presented as easily accessible reflections for each month of the year.

Philip's Earliest Years In Eome. When Philip Neri, in his twentieth year, fixed on Fiome as his abode, he had an education of mind and heart befitting a man who is destined to become great. The influence on him of the city in which he was born, the example and teaching of his parents and masters, his intimacy with the friars of S. Dominic, whom he regarded with such reverence and love, the places he had seen, all combined to ensure this. But there was an influence more powerful still . Philip's clear and thoughtful mind, together with his recollected and meditative habits, would lead him to reflect much on the events of public life in his early years. Those events were of unwonted importance, and we may be sure that Philip was not a listless and unintelligent spectator of a scene so various and so stirring. How often and with what sorrow of heart he would think of the losses inflicted on the Church and on Italy! How continually would he raise to heaven those eyes beaming with charity, pleading for his mother the holy Church, which he loved more than his own life, and which lay before him torn by heresy, sunk in corruption, its life tainted and threatened by a revived and aggressive paganism! Philip was five years old when Leo X. died suddenly, in the prime of life, and not without suspicion of poison. His pontificate had been, in some respects, great and splendid; but, unhappily, the baleful seed of Protestantism then sprang up and bore fruit. He was succeeded by Adrian VI., a Fleming by birth, a man of simple habits, frugal even to parsimony in his mode of life, and an enemy to the literature and art of the day, because both had become profane and licentious. Adrian projected many and weighty reforms, and would probably...

It was the way to salvation and the most effective means of evangelization. God had taken flesh in order to befriend mankind. Jesus had called his Apostles friends. The first Christians, in turn, spread salvation through friendships of their own. Evangelizing the world was done through one friend bringing another into the Church—where both could be friends with God. Friendship and the Fathers brings together, for the first time, the Fathers’ doctrine and stories of friendship—mostly in their own words. You’ll meet many giants of the early Church, including Minucius Felix, and walk with him as he brings a pagan friend to faith. Basil and Gregory, best friends from school whose friendship was shattered and then restored. Ambrose, who encouraged his clergy to cultivate strong friendships. Augustine, whose grief for a lost friend led him to profound insights—and whose friendship with St. Jerome was fraught with emotional baggage. Rabanus Maurus, the great biblical commentator and writer of hymns, whose counsels on friendship have never before appeared in English.

Book excerpt: Philip Neri (1515-1595) is one of the most lovable and popular of saints, Christian humanist, practical joker and one of the Church's great contemplatives, he had such an impact on the degenerate Rome of his day that he quickly became a leading figure in the recovery of Catholic spirituality and culture that we associate with the Counter Reformation. In the midst of the Roman Renaissance, St. Philip was able to prove by his own example and in the lives of those who followed him that Christianity is the way to true and lasting happiness. His burning love for Christ found visible and tangible expression in the many visions and miracles recorded by those around him. Every evening he gathered his disciples to read and discuss the New Testament and then to pray together silently for half an hour. His aim, as he himself said, was to make people 'saints in their own homes'. Philip Neri: The Fire of Joy is the only major biography of Philip to appear during the 400th anniversary celebrations of the life of the saint. Already a bestseller in Germany, Spain and Italy, it draws on the most recent scholarship to paint a vivid, brilliant portrait of one of the most attractive and inspiring figures of Christianity.
