Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Philip Neri is one of the best-loved saints of all time. Known as the ಘApostle of Rome', he set in motion a great renewal of Christianity at the heart of the Church's capital city during the 1500's. St. Philip's foundation of the Oratory began by stimulating young laymen to conversion, prayer, and apostolic works, and through them gradually brought about a reform of the entire Church, at all levels of society. St. Philip inspired many through his words, his miracles and his spiritual gifts, which show many similarities with other great saints such as Padre Pio and St. John Vianney. This account of Philip's life, written by his disciple Antonio Gallonio soon after the saint's death, captures well his holy zeal for God's work in the face of a corrupt and decadent Rome; his great sense of humor, which he would often use to remind people of hidden spiritual realities; and the many extraordinary miracles and conversions wrought by St. Philip both during his lifetime and after his death. This is the first ever English translation of the affectionate biography, published originally in Latin in the Jubilee Year 1600. Unusually for the time, it was written in chronological order; it also bears the original footnotes by Gallonio, in which he refers to eyewitnesses and makes comparisons with the lives of canonized saints, intending thereby to assist in the promotion of Philip's cause for elevation to the altars. Additional notes and a comprehensive index make this a most interesting and useful book for devotees of St. Philip, as well as a very readable introduction to the saint for those who do not yet know him.

Book excerpt: St Philip Neri (1515-1595) is known as the Apostle of Rome and the founder of the Congregation of the Oratory. This translation of his maxims and sayings is the work of Fr Faber, first published in 1847. His Maxims emphasise the constant teaching of the masters of the spiritual life, going back to the Desert Fathers (themselves always the favourite reading of St Philip). Full of good sense, they present us with an essential spirituality, presented as easily accessible reflections for each month of the year.

Book excerpt: In No Strange Land illuminates the richness of mysticism--in the life of Philip Neri--as an "experience of the activity of God." The life of the Apostle of Rome demonstrates that it is primarily people, not arguments, that reveal the mysteries of God. Philip's experience of God, his mysticism, was given him for the sake of others. Furthermore, that experience itself was embodied; that is to say awakened, nourished, and brought to fruition within the religious tradition into which he was born, and from which he lived--in particular the Church of Renaissance Florence and Rome, with its own particular appropriation of Christianity. It is this sacramental life that places mysticism beyond the merely private and esoteric, and allows for the mystic, in Newman's phrase, "to use this world well." With great deftness, Fr. Robinson traverses biographical, historical, and theological domains as he examines the nature of experience, the roles of knowledge and love in prayer, and the primacy of grace in the accomplishment of salvation. Informative and engaging, In No Strange Land is an outstanding contribution to Renaissance biography, historical theology, and the study of mysticism. "Anyone interested in St. Philip Neri will surely find something of great value here. In a way, it is a study of 'mysticism' in which Philip is the case-study. A wide-ranging and wise book."--JOHN RIST, author of Real Ethics and Plato's Moral Realism "In this lucidly argued and very readable book, Fr. Jonathan Robinson interweaves an attractive portrait of the great sixteenth-century reformer St. Philip Neri with an equally persuasive reworking of themes in classical Catholic doctrine of the spiritual life, thus inviting readers to reflect on our own hopes for sanctity in the midst of an indifferent and even deeply hostile cultural environment."--FERGUS KERR, O.P., author of Twentieth-Century Catholic Theologians and After Aquinas "A resident of Rome cannot avoid walking streets where even after more than four centuries the memory of St. Philip Neri remains alive. Turning a corner on some narrow Roman lane, as it were, in Jonathan Robinson's new book we encounter this remarkable saint--one of the great mystics of the Church, a living witness to us, as much as to his contemporaries, of the reality and mercy of God. Father Robinson breaks new ground in this highly original study of St. Philip Neri, presenting a new perspective on the character and mission of the saint."--ARCHBISHOP J. AUGUSTINE DI NOIA, O.P., Assistant Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; author of The Diversity of Religions: A Christian Perspective "Jonathan Robinson offers an intensely thoughtful and impressively well-informed investigation of Filippo Neri and his age--subtly nuanced but clearly and cogently expressed, imbued with deft humor and wry understatement. An intriguing account of a remarkable individual's life and faith, this book also figures as a major achievement in the field of contextual history--illuminating the human realities of sixteenth-century Florence and Rome."--EDWARD GOLDBERG, author of After Vasari and Jews and Magic in Medici Florence FATHER JONATHAN ROBINSON is the founder and Superior of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Toronto. He was educated in Montreal, Edinburgh, and Rome. He was a member of the Philosophy Department at McGill University, and for three years chairman of the department. Fr. Robinson has also lectured at Fordham, Oxford, and Edinburgh, where he was a member of the Department of Logic and Metaphysics. His books include On the Lord's Appearing, Spiritual Combat Revisited, and The Mass and Modernity.

Book excerpt: Philip Neri (1515-1595) is one of the most lovable and popular of saints, Christian humanist, practical joker and one of the Church's great contemplatives, he had such an impact on the degenerate Rome of his day that he quickly became a leading figure in the recovery of Catholic spirituality and culture that we associate with the Counter Reformation. In the midst of the Roman Renaissance, St. Philip was able to prove by his own example and in the lives of those who followed him that Christianity is the way to true and lasting happiness. His burning love for Christ found visible and tangible expression in the many visions and miracles recorded by those around him. Every evening he gathered his disciples to read and discuss the New Testament and then to pray together silently for half an hour. His aim, as he himself said, was to make people 'saints in their own homes'. Philip Neri: The Fire of Joy is the only major biography of Philip to appear during the 400th anniversary celebrations of the life of the saint. Already a bestseller in Germany, Spain and Italy, it draws on the most recent scholarship to paint a vivid, brilliant portrait of one of the most attractive and inspiring figures of Christianity.

Book excerpt: Philip Neri lived in the most important century for the history of the Catholic faith, and even the modern world. Yet he didn't factor into the great events of that century, albeit he was close to many of the great men active in that age. Philip began a life of devotion and prayer, and embodied the expression of St. Paul to ""Pray without ceasing."" Raised to the priesthood, he began the direction of penitents, fearing neither to approach the poor, tradesmen, nobles or cardinals, and to give them great penances to focus their devotion on Jesus Christ. Sometimes reading these penances, one would scratch their head thinking that this is crazy, yet Philip could read souls and had the gift of prophecy, and he knew exactly how to direct his penitents. The distinctive feature of the Mediatrix Press edition is that it is a reprint, not a facsimile. Moreover, footnotes have been added to translate the numerous Italian and Latin quotes found in the text that are not in the original, as well as new portraits.
