Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Bishop John Wordsworth Bishop John Wordsworth was so copious in authorship that the bibliography appended to the volume, though I hope that it contains all his writings that are landmarks in his life, that deal with topics on which he spoke with special knowledge, or that are of permanent importance. Is but a small selection from the mass. A full catalogue would have filled a volume in itself. There has been no thought Of criticism; certainly no serious student will dispense himself from the task Of seeking in the Salisbury Diocesan Gazette for a full and wise comment upon events and thoughts in the English Church during Bishop Wordsworth's Episcopate. But it would be an unprofitable task to make a calendar Of his contributions to that Gazette and his sermons, dozens Of which he printed separately in small numbers and with no view to their general circulation, are quite inaccessible and therefore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christopher Wordsworth: Bishop of Lincoln 1807-1885 The names of the Dean of Chichester and of many other friends, to one and all of whom the warmest thanks are tendered, present themselves in due course. It may seem to some that a comparatively small space has been allotted to some very important subjects; but the work has not been intended to supersede, but to supplement that which the Bishop has himself left behind him in his various publications. To go thoroughly into all the events in which he took a leading part would practically be to write the history of the Church of England for the last fifty years. It has not been attempted to give the history of the Bishop's life year by year, as it was thought better to group the various subjects together under specific heads. In a life so varied, a mere narration of events would have given a very inadequate picture of the man, and been very perplexing to the reader. A table of the principal dates in the Bishop's life will, however, be found at the commencement of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bishop John Selwyn: A Memoir The following sketch of Bishop John Selwyn has appeared to me more and more inadequate in pro portion as, in the course of writing it, I have been privileged to become more and more familiar with the beauties of his life and character. Such as it is, I lay it before those who knew and loved him well, and beg them to pardon its deficiencies. The members of the Bishop's family were urgent that the book should be short. With this desire I fully sympathise, but it has in some measure added to my difficulties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of English Church History Such an object would have been unattainable without the help of many scholars. From the outset the idea of the Dictionary was approved and aided by those English bishops best known as Church historians - the present Bishop of Bristol (dr. G. F. Browne), the late Bishop of Gibraltar (dr. W. E. Collins), and the late Bishop of Salisbury (dr. John Wordsworth). Illness unhappily prevented the Bishop of Bristol and the late Bishop of Gibraltar from contributing articles; while the late Bishop of Salisbury had completed only two of his promised articles when, to the heavy loss of English learning, he was removed by death. The Dictionary is intended not so much for the scientifically trained historian as for the ordinary member of the English Church who desires to know the best ascertained facts in the history of the society to which he belongs. To attain this result in one volume compression and some omissions have been necessary. Yet, notwithstanding this, it is hoped that the broad features of the story have been covered. Any lack of proportion in treatment is due to the consideration that a subject admittedly Obscure, when treated by an expert, demands more generous space than a subject already familiar, for which authorities are easily accessible. In fairness to the contributors, it should be said that many articles have been rigorously compressed owing to exigencies of space. It has not been thought necessary to insist on uniformity in the spelling of proper names as to which scholars of repute differ. References have been appended to most articles, designed not so much to justify the conclusions arrived at, as to direct the reader to fuller and more detailed treatment of the matter discussed. John Clark Christian biography is as much more important than that of ineligious people, as the interests of eternity are greater than those Of time. In this brief state Of probation alone we may prepare for the felicity which awaits the faithful in the coming life. And while we are to regard the Bible as our consti tutional directory, and Christ as our only hope, it becomes us to understand how others, going before us, learned to practice the former, and embrace and trust in the latter unto final salvation. How suitable and profitable it is for us to ascertain correctly how the excellent Of the earth found the way of life in Christ, followed it to the end, and Obtained the in heritance Of the saints in light; and then endeavor to imitate their example, that we may share in the promised reward above. Then let us avail ourselves of Christian biography, both sacred and inspired, as a valuable mode Of instruction.
