Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life, Its Nature, Origin, Development, and the Psychical Related to the Physical Certain imperfectly understood teachings of nature have been perverted by a class of eminent men, and some one should restate these teachings from a different point of view. The writer has endeavored not to state as fact what does not rest upon good authority; but in writing What follows he assumes a serious responsibility. In the border lands of theory and speculation the lines of truth are not always clearly defined. To mislead is easy, and to mislead in important lines of thought may do harm; yet men must bear the responsibility of their honest convictions. Book Synopsis Democracy and Education by : John Dewey
Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Synopsis Sociological Theory- Classical Statements by : Dejerius Burgess
Download or read book Sociological Theory- Classical Statements written by Dejerius Burgess and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic insight of sociology is that human behaviour is largely shaped by the groups to which people belong and by the social interaction that takes place within those groups. The main focus of sociology is the group, not the individual. Sociologist is mainly interested in the interaction between people--the ways in which people act towards, respond to, and influence one another. Sociology, does not, however, study everything that happens in society or under social conditions. Classical Sociological Theory continues to include two historical chapters covering the early history of the field as well as its most recent developments. These chapters give students an overview that allows them to put the work of each theorist in its historical, social, and political context. This book offers students a handy overview of most of what they need to know about classical sociological theory.
Book Synopsis The Nature of Narrative by : Robert Scholes
Download or read book The Nature of Narrative written by Robert Scholes and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2006-09-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past forty years The Nature of Narrative has been an essential work for students of literature, teachers, writers, and scholars. Countering the tendency to view the novel as the paradigm case of literary narrative, Robert Scholes and Robert Kellogg offered a compelling history of narrative from antiquity to the twentieth century. Their main goal was to describe and analyze the nature of narrative's key elements: meaning, character, plot, and point of view. The Fortieth Anniversary Edition of this groundbreaking work has been revised and expanded to include a new preface and a lengthy chapter by James Phelan on developments in narrative theory since 1966. This new material describes the principles and practices of structuralist, cognitive, feminist, and rhetorical approaches to narrative, paying special attention to their work on character, plot, and narrative discourse. A continued leader in the field of narrative studies, The Nature of Narrative offers unique and invaluable histories of both narrative and narrative theory.

Download or read book Conceptual Issues in Psychological Medicine written by the late Michael Shepherd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptual Issues in Psychological Medicine is a collection of papers written by the celebrated psychiatrist, Michael Shepherd, who was one of the originators of psychiatric epidemiology in the UK and a leading social psychiatrist of his generation. He designed and implemented some of the first systematic studies into what are now widely recognised clinical syndromes. His extensive research experience and his advocacy of a scientific approach to social psychiatry form the basis of the essays contained in this book. Covering such issues as the development of research strategy and the difficulties involved in completing psychiatric studies, Shepherd's papers address many of the issues currently facing professionals in this field. He writes authoritatively and engagingly on clinical syndromes, the history of ideas and the use of the epidemiological approach in psychiatry. Conceptual Issues in Psychological Medicine stimulates and informs the reader in equal measure; it will be a welcome addition to the bookshelf of any practitioner of medicine.
