Book excerpt: Over the course of the last ten years, Dr. Alex Caemmerer has written well over one hundred letters to the editors of the New York Times, the Record (of Bergen County, New Jersey), and Psychiatric News, a journal aimed at psychiatrists and other behavioral health providers. The letters, arranged in chapters, represent his response to articles on a variety of topics, including psychiatry, psychoanalysis, religion, priests and bishops, depression, violence, homosexuality, and miscellaneous subjects of general interest. He was also inspired to write in on a variety of subjects, including the business of Big Money, the American automobile and its role in American culture, the symbolic meanings and needs the automobile satisfies in ones psychology, and the practice of psychiatry (including a few examples of what brings one to a psychiatrist). He shared his opinions on business newscasters and their use of language, specifically the words and phrases aimed at scaring the public with frightening metaphors. Over the decades of his career, Dr. Caemmerer has been a witty observer and commentator on how people and society are changingand not always for the betterment of either. These letters capture his unique perspective and his creative solutions to get things back on track.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of letters-to-the-editor written during President Bush's despicable 2004 re-election campaign of smear and fear. Exposed is how George W. Bush, America's greatest confidence man, his advisors and his propaganda machine, blatantly misled Congress and the public by their deceptions, half-truths and outright lies. Our self-designated "war president" lived up to his nefarious style by conning us into his unnecessary war of choice in Iraq; by his shameful economic war against the middle class; by his secret, unconscionable war against the environment; by his misguided war against our constitutional right of privacy; and by his self-ordained war to blur the separation of church and state. Because most of the mainstream media either served as mouthpieces for the Bush administration, or were spinelessly intimidated by them, much of the subject matter in this book was never widely disseminated. These letters draw heavily on the many - mostly unread - books and periodicals available wherein truth resided. Because of their frequency and length, it was never anticipated that but a few of the letters-to-the-editor would be published (two of the short letters actually were). Aside from the therapeutic value I found in writing, my purpose in having sent copies to like-minded friends and relatives scattered around the country and abroad was to encourage them to become letter writing junkies like me. The mighty pen can and will - hopefully sooner than later - restore honesty in government, bridge the widening gap between the have-mores and the have-nots, and avert more damage being so arrogantly done to our democratic institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hungarian city of Sztálinváros, or "Stalin-City," was intended to be the paradigmatic urban community of the new communist society in the 1950s. In Stalinism Reloaded, Sándor Horváth explores how Stalin-City and the socialist regime were built and stabilized not only by the state but also by the people who came there with hope for a better future. By focusing on the everyday experiences of citizens, Horváth considers the contradictions in the Stalinist policies and the strategies these bricklayers, bureaucrats, shop girls, and even children put in place in order to cope with and shape the expectations of the state. Stalinism Reloaded reveals how the state influenced marriage patterns, family structure, and gender relations. While the devastating effects of this regime are considered, a convincing case is made that ordinary citizens had significant agency in shaping the political policies that governed them.

Kerry United States Senator If we are to reinvigorate and reinforce civic participation in this country at a time when our society is increasingly fragmented and highly technologically based, we must find a way to unite distinct communities, such as universities, regional and non-profit organizations, and families. We must find ways to link academicians, students, teachers, and professionals with the reality of events and circumstances so that theories and ideas mightily pursued within the "ivory tower" are connected to social reality and useful. As the editors and contributors in this volume point out, the way to bridge theory/practice divide is not merely to interpret and report on circumstances of the real-world; but rather, to deconstruct the separate and distinct communities that exist within our society and actively engage other communities to realize a continuum of mutual understanding, collaboration, and action. It is crucial to include our nation's public schools in this new approach of social inquiry and social action. Improving and creating educational opportunity for all children in the United States has been an ongoing critical federal issue. We know that when children achieve in school they have a much greater chance of living healthy, productive adult lives that will benefit themselves and society, and we know that increasing the base of stakeholders in children's education yields those positive results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When journalist Josh Wittmore moves from the Illinois bureau of Farm Country News to the newspaper’s national office in Wisconsin, he encounters the biggest story of his young career—just as the paper’s finances may lead to its closure. Josh’s big story is that a corporation that plans to establish an enormous hog farm has bought a lot of land along the Tamarack River in bucolic Ames County. Some of the local residents and officials are excited about the jobs and tax revenues that the big farm will bring, while others worry about truck traffic, porcine aromas, and manure runoff polluting the river. And how would the arrival of a large agribusiness affect life and traditions in this tightly knit rural community of family farmers? Josh strives to provide impartial agricultural reporting, even as his newspaper is replaced by a new Internet-only version owned by a former New York investment banker. And it seems that there may be another force in play: the vengeful ghost of a drowned logger who locals say haunts the valley of the Tamarack River.
