Book excerpt: Letters to Bangkok is a story of love born on the internet between a practising Thai surgeon and an English University marketing manager. The initial Skype conversations and subsequent letters are true and exact records of written exchanges between two people trying to find love. Below is an extract pages 17, 18 and 19 of the actual book. The Skype Connection SeptemberNovember 2008 Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, the famous throwaway saying in Casablanca brings me immediately to thinking with amazement how I first met sweet Pen. Reflecting on this momentous meeting, well momentous in terms of its life-changing impact on my small world, I often pose myself one question: How is it possible that two people, effectively total strangers, with widely different backgrounds and experiences can begin a conversation through a chance meeting at a moment in a time and place on a social chat forum called Skype and through that conversation set off additional exchanges leading eventually to two hearts beating as one? (See explanation of the term Skype below.) It must be said at the outset that both Pen and I came to the site with reservations and varying degrees of scepticism born from previous failed and disappointing encounters on Skype, where people come and go with regular monotony, like ships in the night or ghosts briefly haunting the ether space but soon to disappear without a trace. It is the nature of the beast called social Internet chatting that you may find someone interesting and then they disappear, never to be seen or heard of again, with no by your leave, refusing to reply to further communications, leaving you saying, Um, it was definitely something I said!!!! I had an early impression from what Pen said that she was more experienced on Skype in comparison to me, a relative newcomer. But why did Pen and I come to seek out one another in the first place? I was searching initially for company and solace, as I was suffering in a loveless, rather cruel relationship. Despite my experiences, I have always been an optimist, eternally inquisitive and open minded, a peoples person. Setting aside early negative encounters on social sites, I have been blessed with a strong belief in the goodness of human nature and a belief in destiny. Whether I believed that destiny could be found in such a chance and brief encounter is a moot point. I had just come through a long and difficult marriage which had ended de facto, and although I had not made the break physically from my ex-partner, I had signalled my intention to leave, and in mind and spirit, I had disassociated myself from intimacy or any future plans with this failed relationship. So yes, in one sense, although not consciously acknowledged by myself, I was searching for a human being to fill the emotional chasm left by years of mild mental abuse born of being married to an aggressive and sometimes violent alcoholic. I was seeking someone who might be sensitive, caring, supportive, loving, someone who could be my friend and confidant, someone I could trust with my heart, a lover that would be my love for always, not just temporarily, someone that would be my encourager and someone that would share my dreams and let me share hers, and most importantly, someone that would not betray my emotional trusta big shopping order, you might say! And in that respect, I had already decided to cast my net wider, beyond the shores of England, and sought an international partner to be my friend. I was already familiar with some of the attractive qualities that an Asian woman might bring to a relationship: loyalty, selflessness, spirituality, a caring, loving, and generous nature, and rarely abusive of alcohol. I was also physically attracted to the Asian look with their dark eyes, sultry looks, and long dark hair. For Pen, Skype perhaps offered, amongst other things, an opportunity to d

Book excerpt: When the original Thai version of Letters from Thailand appeared in Bangkok in 1969, it was promptly awarded the SEATO Prize for Thai Literature. Thirteen years later, it was translated into English to reach a much wider readership. Today, the book is still considered one of Thailand’s most entertaining and enduring modern novels, and one of the few portrayals of the immigrant Chinese experience in urban Thailand. Letters from Thailand is the story of Tan Suang U, a young man who leaves China to make his fortune in Thailand at the close of World War II, and ends up marrying, raising a family, and operating a successful business. The novel unfolds through his letters to his beloved mother in China. In Tan Suang U’s lively account of his daily life in Bangkok’s bustling Chiantown, larger and deeper themes emerge: his determination to succeed at business in this strange new culture; his hopes for his family; his resentment at how easily his children embrace urban Thai culture at the expense of the Chinese heritage which he holds dear; his inability to understand or adopt Thai ways; and his growing alienation from a society that is changing too fast for him.

Book excerpt: “For this brief moment, the two sisters could be ‘together in heart and affection’, and through such letters bridge the distance of empire.” We often learn about the commerce, diplomacy, and military campaigns of the British empire without reference to the intimate side of life in these times—the development of self, the position of women, and the importance of family. In this book, the story of empire, so often told from a man’s perspective, is given a unique vantage point through Eliza Hillier’s letters to her younger sister, Martha. Written largely from Hong Kong, Shanghai, England, and Siam, the letters allow us to become a member of her family and follow the daily tribulations associated with the life of a young British woman in the port cities of Asia. We are thus able to share Eliza’s experiences as she leaves home to embark on married life, starts and raises a family, grieves at the abrupt and tragic loss of her husband, Charles Batten Hillier, and then sets about re-building her life. At once a reflection on the daily components of empire, an entertaining narrative of familial relationships, and the story of one woman’s inner feelings, My Dearest Martha guides us through the vagaries of life for a family who were very much a part of imperial careering and missionary circles in East and Southeast Asia. The letters are complemented by images and commentary from the author, a descendant of Eliza, providing context and depth, which together give us a fuller picture of British colonial life in the mid-1800s from a perspective that will resonate with readers around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to modern Thai literature through the themes of modernity, nationalism, identity and gender. In the cultural, political and social transformations that occurred in Thailand during the first half of the twentieth century, Thai literature was one of the vehicles that moved the changes. Taking seriously ‘read till it shatters’, a Thai phrase that instructs readers to take apart the text, to break it down, to deconstruct it, Thak Chaloemtiarana challenges the Thai literary canon from the margins and suggests ways of expanding and enriching it. Thai literature is scarce in translation and requires the skills of a scholar fluent in Thai to comprehend it. Thak is a political scientist turned literary scholar who is bilingual in Thai and English and an avid reader of Thai fiction by authors up and down the social scale. Here he offers lively insights into his favourite literary genres with fresh readings of early Thai novels, Sino-Thai biographies and memoirs of the rich and famous. ‘Thak Chaloemtiarana is an inquisitive man. Late in his career he switched from politics to literature. In these chapters, he draws on a lifetime of reading about writers and writing in Thailand over the past century. He nods towards the usual big names—King Vajiravudh, Luang Wichit, Kulap Saipradit, Kukrit Pramoj—but spends more time on those found in the lesser visited stacks of the libraries, the secondhand bookstalls, and the shelf by the supermarket checkout. His themes are familiar—Thailand and the West, Thai nationalism, the Thai-Chinese, and women under patriarchy—but the angles of vision are original. With a cast ranging from motor-racing princes through sexy Egyptian mummies and a feminist serial murderer to starlets touting breast-enhancement techniques, this book educates, enlightens, and entertains.’

Book excerpt: "A house in the center of Bangkok becomes the point of confluence where lives are shaped by upheaval, memory, and the lure of home. Witness to two centuries' flux in one of the world's most restless cities, a house plays host to longings and losses past, present, and future. A nineteenth-century missionary doctor pines for the comforts of New England even as he finds the vibrant foreign chaos of Siam increasingly difficult to resist. A post-war society woman marries, mothers, and holds court, little suspecting the course of her future. A jazz pianist is summoned in the 1970s to conjure music that will pacify resident spirits, even as he's haunted by ghosts of his former life. Not long after, a young woman gives swimming lessons in the luxury condos that have eclipsed the old house, trying to outpace the long shadow of her political past. And in the post-submergence Bangkok of the future, a band of savvy teenagers guides tourists and former residents past waterlogged, ruined landmarks, selling them tissues to wipe their tears for places they themselves do not remember. Time collapses as these stories collide and converge, linked by blood, memory, yearning, chance, and the forces voraciously making and remaking the amphibian, ever-morphing city itself"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: A PASSIONATE, AFFECTIONATE RECORD OF ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURES IN THE WORLD'S HOTTEST METROPOLIS Tourists come to Bangkok for many reasons—a sex change operation, a night with two prostitutes dressed as nuns, a stay in a luxury hotel. Lawrence Osborne comes for the cheap dentistry. Broke (but no longer in pain), he finds that he can live in Bangkok on a few dollars a day. And so the restless exile stays. Osborne's is a visceral experience of Bangkok, whether he's wandering the canals that fill the old city; dining at the No Hands Restaurant, where his waitress feeds him like a baby; or launching his own notably unsuccessful career as a gigolo. A guide without inhibitions, Osborne takes us to a feverish place where a strange blend of ancient Buddhist practice and new sexual mores has created a version of modernity only superficially indebted to the West. Bangkok Days is a love letter to the city that revived Osborne's faith in adventure and the world.
