Book excerpt: "[This book contains] ... letters from a young Dundee surgeon who had volunteered to serve with the British Army during the Crimean War 1854-1856 ... There is very little about the much-documented chaos of the campaign and the misery in the British Military Hospital in Constantinople. Instead we have this young doctor's first-hand ... comments on the events that took place around him"--Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of letters from a Union surgeon in the American Civil War, revealing what life was like for a doctor and a soldier in that era. Union surgeon James Dana Benton witnessed firsthand the suffering and death brought about by the ghastly wounds, infections, and diseases that wreaked havoc to both the Union and Confederate armies. A native of New York, Dr. Benton penned a series of letters throughout the war to his family relating his experiences with the 111th New York Infantry as an assistant surgeon, and later with the 98th New York as surgeon. This unique correspondence—which covers a wide array of topics beyond medicine and the treatment of the injured—is the basis of Death, Disease, and Life at War: The Civil War Letters of Surgeon James D. Benton, 111th and 98th New York Infantry Regiments, 1862-1865. Dr. Benton was present for some of the war’s most gruesome and important battles, including Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg. He was also present for the fall of Harpers Ferry, Abraham Lincoln’s second Inaugural address, and the collapse of Richmond. His pen offers an insightful and honest look into the everyday life of not only a Union surgeon, but also an officer who suffered the same basic hardships other soldiers in the ranks endured. Chris Loperfido’s Death, Disease, and Life at War is a valuable addition to the Civil War bookshelf. “More than 600,00 men perished in the Civil War, and many more were wounded or fell ill. Prompt and timely attention from an army surgeon was often the difference between life and death. James Benton’s letters home provide a compelling glimpse into the everyday life of these doctors—their concerns and frustrations, their patients and colleagues, the places visited, and their opinions on the war. I commend Christopher Loperfido for bringing this interesting slice of the war to light.” —Scott L. Mingus, Sr., award-winning author of Confederate General William “Extra Billy Smith”: From Virginia’s Statehouse to Gettysburg Scapegoat “Loperfido’s excellent arrangement of [Benton’s] letters provide[s] a compelling look at the life of a Union doctor during a time when the practice of medicine was still primitive and an understanding of health in general was scanty at best. Death, Disease, and Life at War is another valuable piece to the puzzle of understanding what it was like to serve in the Civil War.” —Meg Groeling, author of The Aftermath of the Battle: The Burial of the Civil War Dead

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "George Frederick 'Fred' Dallas wrote 137 letters to his family and friends while on active service in the Crimea. A company commander in the 46th Foot, his first letters reflect a soldier's enthusiasm for the 'brilliant affair' that awaits the British Army overseas. Within weeks of arriving, excitement turns to disbelief at the continual misjudgement of his leaders. Poor preparation and divided command exposed the troops to surprise attacks from 'The Russe', and to the appalling conditions of the Crimean winter. By contrast, Dallas' reports on the casual bravery of his comrades recognise the true heroes of a mismanaged campaign. Through these letters we relive the terrible perils of combat and siege warfare: the author's almost miraculous escape from serious injury, whilst continually witnessing his comrades' slaughter; the monotony of being entrenched in Sebastopol; the 'utter confusion' surrounding instructions to attack; the mistakes at Inkermann and the Redan; the wearying cold. We also get an insight into the quieter moments in camp and the friendships forged between the men. Supplemented by the editor's excellent footnotes and detailed biographical index, this is a revealing and intimate history of all those involved in the Crimean War."--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: "First edition containing a record of the author's extensive experiences in the Crimean War during which he served as chief surgeon to the British army. Macleod was present at Smyrna and Sebastopol, and he describes the high mortalityrates for all of the standard operations. He recommended amputation despite the likelihood of unfavorable outcome (for excision of the hip joint the mortality was one hundred percent), since delay led to even greater loss of life. The war in the Crimea, according to the author, 'added little to our medical knowledge. Its short duration prevented this; yet it has shown us wounds of a severity, perhaps, never before equalled' (p. vii). A Philadelphia edition for use by Union surgeons during the Civil War was published in 1862. An edition for use by Confederate surgeons was published in 1862 in Richmond."--Antiquarian bookseller's description.
