It aims to present in a direct and lucid manner an outline of the principles governing har monic composition. The student is supposed to have a thorough knowledge of the rudiments of music, as outlined in Lesson I. Until such a knowledge is acquired, progress in the study of harmony is hopeless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Harmony The present work is the outcome of a request, addressed to me by the Council of the Royal College of Music some years ago (as the Professor responsible for the teaching of Harmony and Counterpoint in that Institution), that I should prepare a Manual of Harmony for use in the College. Began then, its completion was unfortunately delayed by my many and growing engagements, and I found it necessary to ask the aid of my pupil and former assistant, Dr. Sawyer, who has had much experience in teaching this subject, in order that the desired task should be completed. I have thought it right to couple Dr. Sawyer's name with my own on the title-page, as only fair to one who has devoted so much time and rendered so much valuable assistance in the preparation of this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Key to Chadwick's Harmony The solutions here given are not to be regarded as the only possible harmonizations of the given basses and melodies. The student should be allowed some liberty in his choice of positions even in his choice of the chords themselves in proportion to his natural talent and'innate musical taste. For this reason the les sons, which partake of the character of original work (lxv), have not been fully worked out. It may be' suggested that the lessons on the Figured Chorale belong to the domain of Counterpoint (in the modern sense). While this is certainly true, as far as the part-writing is con cerned, such an art can never be mastered by the study of Coun terpoint alone. The lessons on the Figured Chorale (especially with the melody in the. Inner voices) may be continued indefi nitely with ever increasing profit to the student, and it is for' this purpose that the 17 Chorales by Bach are given at the end of the book. For this reason the construction Of scales, which is often given in books Of harmony, is here omitted, as the author contends that that subject belongs to the rudiments, as does also the subject of intervals. As, however, a theoretical knowledge of intervals does not enter into all systems Of teaching the elements of music, and an exact knowledge Of intervals is a prerequisite to the study of harmony, a preliminary chapter on them is included for those who may need it. Those who are not thoroughly familiar with intervals should write them out in different keys. All the early examples should also be transposed to different keys till the student gains the power of readily recognising the chords and their progressions in all their varied appearances and disguises. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harmony Harmony is the grammar of tone language. The knowledge of Harmony is just as indispensable to anyone studying music, as the knowledge of grammar is to those who wish to gain more than a superficial understanding of a language. Since the exercises in Harmony (from very simple pedagogical grounds) not only can be resolved into their elements, but, for the most part, must be a combination of separate elements, the student can easily see in them the preparation for composing; they are such indeed in no other sense than are the orthographical and grammatical exercises preparatory to writing poetry - not less elementary, not less indispensable. All chords may be divided into two groups: - 1. Triad, or chord with three tones. 2. Sept chord, or chord with four tones. Every triad consists of a fundamental tone, its third and its fifth. Every tone of the scale may be used as the fundamental of such a triad, thus a triad can be formed on any tone of the scale by adding its third and its fifth. If one uses only the tones which belong to a certain scale he will find that part of the triads have a major third and a perfect fifth, while others have a minor third and a perfect fifth. The triad on the VII degree of any scale, as well as on the II degree of the minor scale, always has a minor third and a diminished fifth. The difference between these triads does not concern us at present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature of HarmonyAt first, the contributions to such a theory based on scientific investigation were few and far between it is only of late that the impulse given to scientific study in general has helped us forward considerably. The interest of practical musicians in the new science is still confined to the few, and has not yet become intense but this is hardly to be wondered at when we consider that it is only within the past twenty years that our scientific knowledge has become sufficient to make it possible to classify discovered facts into a well-rounded system, available for practical use. The more the new way of looking at harmonic relations is seen to be positively useful and practical, the more will interest in laying scientific foundations for the art of music become widespread and lively. In the following pages I shall briefly show what benefit the practical teaching of music has already derived from exact science, and how much it may still hope to' draw from such study in wholly new directions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
