Les données ont été recueillies par un premier questionnaire distribué à tous les présidents de club (enquête épidémiologique exhaustive). Un second questionnaire a été réservé aux joueurs (enquête épidémiologique par sondage stratifié). Le risque de traumatismes des étages inférieur et /ou moyen de la face a été lié au groupe joué, à l'âge, et au nombre d'années de pratique et d'heures d'entraînement hebdomadaire. 64,3% de joueurs portaient un protège-dents. Par ailleurs, le port n'était pas systématique. Ce port était lié à la prise en charge du protège-dents, aux qualités et aux défauts de celui-ci, aux nombres d'années de pratique et à l'âge de début du port.

Le manque de données concernant ces traumatismes tant du point de vue de leur impact sportif que de leur impact économique limite les informations transmises aux licenciés et aux clubs. Matériels et méthodes : Une revue de littérature a été effectuée pour rendre compte de l'état actuel des connaissances. Une étude épidémiologique a été réalisée sur un échantillon de joueurs de rugby évoluant en France tous niveaux confondus, du top 14 professionnel aux divisions amateurs, afin de connaitre la prévalence des traumatismes de la face lors de la pratique du rugby. Résultats : 43% des joueurs interrogés ont, par le passé, été victimes d'au moins un traumatisme de la face. Ces accidents, entraînant en moyenne 24 jours d'arrêt d'entraînement et /ou de compétition, sont préjudiciables pour le joueur, son équipe et pour la fédération en général. 68% des joueurs interrogés se déclarent porteur d'une PIB : ce taux varie en fonction du poste, de l'âge, du niveau de jeu et est différent à l'entraînement et en compétition. Discussion : Nous ne pouvons mettre en évidence de différence de comportement significative entre professionnels et amateurs sur le rapport au traumatisme et au port de PIB. Nous pouvons cependant avancer que les joueurs professionnels, bénéficiant d'un suivi médical plus poussé, paraissent être davantage préservés de ces chocs.

L'augmentation croissante des licenciés est le témoin de la nécessité d'évaluer régulièrement la fréquence de ces traumas pour adapter les recommandations concernant les moyens de protection mis à disposition et leur bonne utilisation.

Though the genocide of 1994 catapulted Rwanda onto the international stage, English-language historical accounts of the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa--which encompasses Burundi, eastern Congo, Rwanda, western Tanzania, and Uganda--are scarce. Drawing on colonial archives, oral tradition, archeological discoveries, anthropologic and linguistic studies, and his thirty years of scholarship, Jean-Pierre Chr tien offers a major synthesis of the history of the region, one still plagued by extremely violent wars. This translation brings the work of a leading French historian to an English-speaking audience for the first time. Chr tien retraces the human settlement and the formation of kingdoms around the sources of the Nile, which were "discovered" by European explorers around 1860. He describes these kingdoms' complex social and political organization and analyzes how German, British, and Belgian colonizers not only transformed and exploited the existing power structures, but also projected their own racial categories onto them. Finally, he shows how the independent states of the postcolonial era, in particular Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda, have been trapped by their colonial and precolonial legacies, especially by the racial rewriting of the latter by the former. Today, argues Chr tien, the Great Lakes of Africa is a crucial region for historical research--not only because its history is fascinating but also because the tragedies of its present are very much a function of the political manipulations of its past.
