Book excerpt: This book, coinciding with the sixtieth anniversary of the Liberation of France, takes a unique approach to the events of 1944, by seeing them as shared experiences which brought ordinary Anglo-Americans and French people into contact with each other in a variety of different communities. The book looks at the Liberation through 5 case-studies: Normandy, Cherbourg, Provence, the Pyrénées-Orientales and Reims, and uses the words of participants at the time to describe the developing relationship between Liberators and Liberated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Resistance and Liberation, Douglas Porch continues his epic history of France at war. Emerging from the debâcle of 1940, France faced the quandary of how to rebuild military power, protect the empire, and resuscitate its global influence. While Charles de Gaulle rejected the armistice and launched his offshore crusade to reclaim French honor within the Allied camp, defeatists at Vichy embraced cooperation with the victorious Axis. The book charts the emerging dynamics of la France libre and the Alliance, Vichy collaboration, and the swelling resistance to the Axis occupation. From the campaigns in Tunisia and Italy to Liberation, Douglas Porch traces how de Gaulle sought to forge a French army and prevent civil war. He captures the experiences of ordinary French men and women caught up in war and defeat, the choices they made, the trials they endured, and how this has shaped France's memory of those traumatic years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides their insistence on praxis and the application of the Word of God to a given situation, Liberation Theologies make ample use of tools of analysis to uncover root causes of oppression. Now, it is precisely with respect to these tools that Liberation Theologies today find themselves on shifting grounds. In intra-ecclesiastical circles cultural concerns have come to replace socio-economic analysis, whereas after the implosion of the East Bloc the liberationists proper also pay more attention to the issues of gender, ecology, and indigenous movements. The contributions to this volume, originating from various continents, discuss to what extent this shift in emphasis is desirable, and acceptable, and conclude that the cultural focus cannot possibly invalidate but only enrich and complete the socio-economic analysis. They, moreover, try to assess the developments in light of globalization (economics, informatics), on the one hand, and postmodernity on the other. Given the impact of western culture politics, the question arises as to whether the native cultures will succeed in keeping up their religious core values and structures of solidarity - two elements so indispensable for liberative commitments.

Book excerpt: The Sons of Night is two, or more, books in one. The first is Antoine Gimenez's memoir of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, an engaging tale of heroism and intrigue. The remaining three-quarters of the manuscript is a record of the fascination his memoir held for a group of historians—the "Gimenologists"—and the multiple paths of research and inquiry it led them down. Book Two begins with eighty-two "endnotes" to the memoir, each the equivalent of a chapter that follows a particular historical thread or explores a question raised by Gimenez's text. This is followed by the biographies of various people appearing in the memoir, many based on the friendships the historians formed with the now-elderly revolutionaries. The book closes with an Afterword discussing theoretical issues raised by the memoir and seven appendices. Also includes an Introduction by Spanish historian Julián Vadillo Muñoz.

It signalled the rise of 'new wave' cinema and the arrival of the 'post structuralist' literary-philosophy of Derrida, Foucault, and others. This is the first book-length study of May '68 in French fiction and film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remade in France: Anglicisms in the Lexicon and Morphology of French chronicles the current status of French Anglicisms, a popular topic in the history of the French language and a compelling example of the influence of global English. The abundant data come from primary sources-a large online newspaper corpus (for unofficial Anglicisms) and the dictionary (for official Anglicisms)-and secondary sources. This book examines the appearance and behavior of English items in the lexicon and morphology of French, and explains them in the context of French neology and lexical activity. The first phase of the latest contact period (1990-2015) has its own complex linguistic characterization, including a significant influx of nonce borrowings and very low frequency Anglicisms, heterogeneous and creative borrowing outcomes, and direct phraseological borrowing. This book is a counterargument to the well-known criticism that Anglicisms are lexical polluters. On the contrary, the use of Anglicisms requires the inventive application of complex linguistic rules, and the borrowing of Anglicisms into the French lexicon is convincing proof that language change is systematic. The findings bring novel interdisciplinary insights to the domains of borrowing in a non-bilingual contact setting; global English as a source of lexical creativity in the French lexicon; the phases, patterns and processes of integration of English loanwords; the morphology of borrowing; and computational corpus linguistics. The appended database is a snapshot of a synchronic period of linguistic contact and a useful lexicographic resource.

Book excerpt: Hanns Ullrich, this highly renowned legal scholar, has had a tremendous influence on legal research and the development of the law in the fields of both Technology and Competition. His expertise dates back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when he served as a member of the research staff at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property in Munich. In 1985, he became professor of law at the "Universität der Bundeswehr", Munich, and finally, in 2000, professor at the european University Institute, florence. He has acted as visiting professor at a number of Universities around the worldincluding, in particular, the College of Europe, Bruges. The authors of the contributions in this book feel greatly indebted to Hanns Ullrich. Much earlier than others, he recognised and explained that, in the absence of pressure from competition, intellectual property will not be able to fulfil its mission of enhancing innovation. In concentrating on the fields of interest of this eminent scholar, the contributions address a number of the most burning issues of the regulation of intellectual property, competition law and, of course, the application of competition law to IP-related cases.
