Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lecture notes were prepared by the authors for use in graduate courses and seminars, based on the work of many earlier mathematicians. In addition to very elementary results, presented for the convenience of the reader, Chapter I contains the Morita theorems and the definition of the projective class group of a commutative ring. Chapter II addresses the Brauer group of a commutative ring, and automorphisms of separable algebras. Chapter III surveys the principal theorems of the Galois theory for commutative rings. In Chapter IV the authors present a direct derivation of the first six terms of the seven-term exact sequence for Galois cohomology. In the fifth and final chapter the authors illustrate the preceding material with applications to the structure of central simple algebras and the Brauer group of a Dedekind domain, and they pose problems for further investigation. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in commutative algebra has surged over the past decades. In order to survey and highlight recent developments in this rapidly expanding field, the Centre de Recerca Matematica in Bellaterra organized a ten-days Summer School on Commutative Algebra in 1996. Lectures were presented by six high-level specialists, L. Avramov (Purdue), M.K. Green (UCLA), C. Huneke (Purdue), P. Schenzel (Halle), G. Valla (Genova) and W.V. Vasconcelos (Rutgers), providing a fresh and extensive account of the results, techniques and problems of some of the most active areas of research. The present volume is a synthesis of the lectures given by these authors. Research workers as well as graduate students in commutative algebra and nearby areas will find a useful overview of the field and recent developments in it. Reviews "All six articles are at a very high level; they provide a thorough survey of results and methods in their subject areas, illustrated with algebraic or geometric examples." - Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum Avramov lecture: "... it contains all the major results [on infinite free resolutions], it explains carefully all the different techniques that apply, it provides complete proofs (...). This will be extremely helpful for the novice as well as the experienced." - Mathematical reviews Huneke lecture: "The topic is tight closure, a theory developed by M. Hochster and the author which has in a short time proved to be a useful and powerful tool. (...) The paper is extremely well organized, written, and motivated." - Zentralblatt MATH Schenzel lecture: "... this paper is an excellent introduction to applications of local cohomology." - Zentralblatt MATH Valla lecture: "... since he is an acknowledged expert on Hilbert functions and since his interest has been so broad, he has done a superb job in giving the readers a lively picture of the theory." - Mathematical reviews Vasconcelos lecture: "This is a very useful survey on invariants of modules over noetherian rings, relations between them, and how to compute them." - Zentralblatt MATH

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2018. This book grew out of a course of lectures given to third year undergraduates at Oxford University and it has the modest aim of producing a rapid introduction to the subject. It is designed to be read by students who have had a first elementary course in general algebra. On the other hand, it is not intended as a substitute for the more voluminous tracts such as Zariski-Samuel or Bourbaki. We have concentrated on certain central topics, and large areas, such as field theory, are not touched. In content we cover rather more ground than Northcott and our treatment is substantially different in that, following the modern trend, we put more emphasis on modules and localization.

At that level, students have already followed a basic course in linear algebra and are essentially fluent with the language of vector spaces over fields. The topics introduced include arithmetic of rings, modules, especially principal ideal rings and the classification of modules over such rings, Galois theory, as well as an introduction to more advanced topics such as homological algebra, tensor products, and algebraic concepts involved in algebraic geometry. More than 300 exercises will allow the reader to deepen his understanding of the subject. The book also includes 11 historical vignettes about mathematicians who contributed to commutative algebra.

Book excerpt: Determinantal rings and varieties have been a central topic of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. Their study has attracted many prominent researchers and has motivated the creation of theories which may now be considered part of general commutative ring theory. The book gives a first coherent treatment of the structure of determinantal rings. The main approach is via the theory of algebras with straightening law. This approach suggest (and is simplified by) the simultaneous treatment of the Schubert subvarieties of Grassmannian. Other methods have not been neglected, however. Principal radical systems are discussed in detail, and one section is devoted to each of invariant and representation theory. While the book is primarily a research monograph, it serves also as a reference source and the reader requires only the basics of commutative algebra together with some supplementary material found in the appendix. The text may be useful for seminars following a course in commutative ring theory since a vast number of notions, results, and techniques can be illustrated significantly by applying them to determinantal rings.

Book excerpt: The subject of Clifford (geometric) algebras offers a unified algebraic framework for the direct expression of the geometric concepts in algebra, geometry, and physics. This bird's-eye view of the discipline is presented by six of the world's leading experts in the field; it features an introductory chapter on Clifford algebras, followed by extensive explorations of their applications to physics, computer science, and differential geometry. The book is ideal for graduate students in mathematics, physics, and computer science; it is appropriate both for newcomers who have little prior knowledge of the field and professionals who wish to keep abreast of the latest applications.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, this classic textbook is an English translation of Einführung in die kommutative Algebra und algebraische Geometrie. As part of the Modern Birkhäuser Classics series, the publisher is proud to make Introduction to Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry available to a wider audience. Aimed at students who have taken a basic course in algebra, the goal of the text is to present important results concerning the representation of algebraic varieties as intersections of the least possible number of hypersurfaces and—a closely related problem—with the most economical generation of ideals in Noetherian rings. Along the way, one encounters many basic concepts of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry and proves many facts which can then serve as a basic stock for a deeper study of these subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the theory of associative rings and their modules, designed primarily for graduate students. The standard topics on the structure of rings are covered, with a particular emphasis on the concept of the complete ring of quotients. A survey of the fundamental concepts of algebras in the first chapter helps to make the treatment self-contained. The topics covered include selected results on Boolean and other commutative rings, the classical structure theory of associative rings, injective modules, and rings of quotients. The final chapter provides an introduction to homological algebra. Besides three appendices on further results, there is a six-page section of historical comments. Table of Contents: Fundamental Concepts of Algebra: 1.1 Rings and related algebraic systems; 1.2 Subrings, homomorphisms, ideals; 1.3 Modules, direct products, and direct sums; 1.4 Classical isomorphism theorems. Selected Topics on Commutative Rings: 2.1 Prime ideals in commutative rings; 2.2 Prime ideals in special commutative rings; 2.3 The complete ring of quotients of a commutative ring; 2.4 Rings of quotients of commutative semiprime rings; 2.5 Prime ideal spaces.Classical Theory of Associative Rings: 3.1 Primitive rings; 3.2 Radicals; 3.3 Completely reducible modules; 3.4 Completely reducible rings; 3.5 Artinian and Noetherian rings; 3.6 On lifting idempotents; 3.7 Local and semiperfect rings. Injectivity and Related Concepts: 4.1 Projective modules; 4.2 Injective modules; 4.3 The complete ring of quotients; 4.4 Rings of endomorphisms of injective modules; 4.5 Regular rings of quotients; 4.6 Classical rings of quotients; 4.7 The Faith-Utumi theorem. Introduction to Homological Algebra: 5.1 Tensor products of modules; 5.2 Hom and $\otimes$ as functors; 5.3 Exact sequences; 5.4 Flat modules; 5.5 Torsion and extension products. Appendixes; Comments; Bibliography; Index. Review from Zentralblatt Math: Due to their clarity and intelligible presentation, these lectures on rings and modules are a particularly successful introduction to the surrounding circle of ideas. Review from American Mathematical Monthly: An introduction to associative rings and modules which requires of the reader only the mathematical maturity which one would attain in a first-year graduate algebra [course]...in order to make the contents of the book as accessible as possible, the author develops all the fundamentals he will need.In addition to covering the basic topics...the author covers some topics not so readily available to the nonspecialist...the chapters are written to be as independent as possible...[which will be appreciated by] students making their first acquaintance with the subject...one of the most successful features of the book is that it can be read by graduate students with little or no help from a specialist. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of books on Commutative Algebra, but the present book is different. Most books are monographs, with extensive coverage. There is one notable exception: Atiyah and Macdonald’s 1969 classic. It is a clear, concise, and efficient textbook, aimed at beginners, with a good selection of topics. So it has remained popular. However, its age and flaws do show. So there is need for an updated and improved version, which the present book aims to be.
