Book excerpt: An overview is given of new developments of the least squares finite element method (LSFEM) in fluid dynamics. Special emphasis is placed on the universality of LSFEM; the symmetry and positiveness of the algebraic systems obtained from LSFEM; the accommodation of LSFEM to equal order interpolations for incompressible viscous flows; and the natural numerical dissipation of LSFEM for convective transport problems and high speed compressible flows. The performance of LSFEM is illustrated by numerical examples. Jiang, Bo-Nan and Povinelli, Louis A. Glenn Research Center NASA ORDER C-99066-G; RTOP 505-62-21...

This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Heat Transfer (CHT) evolve and become increasingly important in standard engineering design and analysis practice, users require a solid understanding of mechanics and numerical methods to make optimal use of available software. The Finite Element Method in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics, Third Edition illustrates what a user must know to ensure the optimal application of computational procedures—particularly the Finite Element Method (FEM)—to important problems associated with heat conduction, incompressible viscous flows, and convection heat transfer. This book follows the tradition of the bestselling previous editions, noted for their concise explanation and powerful presentation of useful methodology tailored for use in simulating CFD and CHT. The authors update research developments while retaining the previous editions’ key material and popular style in regard to text organization, equation numbering, references, and symbols. This updated third edition features new or extended coverage of: Coupled problems and parallel processing Mathematical preliminaries and low-speed compressible flows Mode superposition methods and a more detailed account of radiation solution methods Variational multi-scale methods (VMM) and least-squares finite element models (LSFEM) Application of the finite element method to non-isothermal flows Formulation of low-speed, compressible flows With its presentation of realistic, applied examples of FEM in thermal and fluid design analysis, this proven masterwork is an invaluable tool for mastering basic methodology, competently using existing simulation software, and developing simpler special-purpose computer codes. It remains one of the very best resources for understanding numerical methods used in the study of fluid mechanics and heat transfer phenomena.

Book Synopsis Fluid-structure Interactions by : Thomas Richter
Download or read book Fluid-structure Interactions written by Thomas Richter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-26 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book starts by introducing the fundamental concepts of mathematical continuum mechanics for fluids and solids and their coupling. Special attention is given to the derivation of variational formulations for the subproblems describing fluid- and solid-mechanics as well as the coupled fluid-structure interaction problem. Two monolithic formulations for fluid-structure interactions are described in detail: the well-established ALE formulation and the modern Fully Eulerian formulation, which can effectively deal with problems featuring large deformation and contact. Further, the book provides details on state-of-the-art discretization schemes for fluid- and solid-mechanics and considers the special needs of coupled problems with interface-tracking and interface-capturing techniques. Lastly, advanced topics like goal-oriented error estimation, multigrid solution and gradient-based optimization schemes are discussed in the context of fluid-structure interaction problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider the application of least-squares variational principles and the finite element method to the numerical solution of boundary value problems arising in the fields of solid and fluid mechanics. For manyof these problems least-squares principles offer many theoretical and computational advantages in the implementation of the corresponding finite element model that are not present in the traditional weak form Galerkin finite element model. Most notably, the use of least-squares principles leads to a variational unconstrained minimization problem where stability conditions such as inf-sup conditions (typically arising in mixed methods using weak form Galerkin finite element formulations) never arise. In addition, the least-squares based finite element model always yields a discrete system of equations with a symmetric positive definite coefficient matrix. These attributes, amongst many others highlighted and detailed in this work, allow the development of robust and efficient finite element models for problems of practical importance. The research documented herein encompasses least-squares based formulations for incompressible and compressible viscous fluid flow, the bending of thin and thick plates, and for the analysis of shear-deformable shell structures.
Book Synopsis The Finite Element Method: Theory, Implementation, and Applications by : Mats G. Larson

This book was released on 2013-01-13 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an introduction to the finite element method as a general computational method for solving partial differential equations approximately. Our approach is mathematical in nature with a strong focus on the underlying mathematical principles, such as approximation properties of piecewise polynomial spaces, and variational formulations of partial differential equations, but with a minimum level of advanced mathematical machinery from functional analysis and partial differential equations. In principle, the material should be accessible to students with only knowledge of calculus of several variables, basic partial differential equations, and linear algebra, as the necessary concepts from more advanced analysis are introduced when needed. Throughout the text we emphasize implementation of the involved algorithms, and have therefore mixed mathematical theory with concrete computer code using the numerical software MATLAB is and its PDE-Toolbox. We have also had the ambition to cover some of the most important applications of finite elements and the basic finite element methods developed for those applications, including diffusion and transport phenomena, solid and fluid mechanics, and also electromagnetics.
