Book Synopsis Bilingual Language Acquisition by : Carmen Silva-Corvalán
Download or read book Bilingual Language Acquisition written by Carmen Silva-Corvalán and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do children develop bilingual competence? Do bilingual children develop language in the same way as monolinguals? Set in the context of findings on language development, this book examines the acquisition of English and Spanish by two brothers in the first six years of their lives. Based on in-depth and meticulous analyses of naturalistic data, it explores how the systems of both languages affect each other as the children develop, and how different levels of exposure to each language influence the nature of acquisition. The author demonstrates that the children's grammars and lexicons follow a developmental path similar to that of monolinguals, but that cross-linguistic interactions affecting lexical, semantic and discourse-pragmatic aspects arise in Spanish when exposure to it diminishes around the age of four. The first of its kind, this original study is a must-read for students and researchers in bilingualism, child development, language acquisition and language contact.
Book Synopsis A Contrastive Grammar of Brazilian Pomeranian by : Gertjan Postma
Download or read book A Contrastive Grammar of Brazilian Pomeranian written by Gertjan Postma and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pomeranian is the West Germanic language spoken by European emigrants who went from Farther Pomerania (present-day Poland) to Brazil in the period 1857–1887. This language is no longer spoken in cohesive societies in Europe, but the language has survived and is in remarkably good shape on this language island in the tropical state of Espirito Santo. This monograph offers the first synchronic grammar of this language. After a historical introduction, the book offers a systematic description of its phonology, morphology and syntax. The language is contrasted with its European sisters, more particularly High German, Dutch, and Frisian. It highlights various phenomena that will presumably contribute to the ongoing theoretical debate on the Germanic verbal system. It provides new data on cluster V2, do-support, and the two infinitives. As to the infinitival syntax, the language shows remarkable parallels to the system of Frisian. As to the rich Pomeranian system of subtractive morphology, the phonological account that is offered, will be important for the ongoing discussion of the abstractness of phonological representations. Finally, Pomeranian is a welcome addition to the set of languages on which our etymological understanding of West Germanic is based.
Book Synopsis The Fabulous Lost and Found and the Little Mouse who Spoke Portuguese by : Mark Pallis
Download or read book The Fabulous Lost and Found and the Little Mouse who Spoke Portuguese written by Mark Pallis and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A little mouse walks into the Lost & Found, but can only speak Portuguese. How will Mr and Mrs Frog figure out what the mouse is missing...? Aimed at children aged 2-7, the unique 'Story-powered language learning method' combines humour, story and emotion to gently and memorably introduce kids to 50 Portuguese words and phrases. "The kids were so busy laughing they didn't realise they were learning." Kyle Buchannan, Dad of two, London. It's a bilingual Portuguese English children's book with a difference, that helps lay the foundations of a love of languages. Reviews: "I love that I can introduce my kids to a new language without it feeling like homework." Zoe Reynolds, UK "Let's read it again." Noah, aged 4.5 "Utterly charming story, making use of children's natural approach to learning language" Madalena Xanthopoulou, We live Languages. "A wonderful book to introduce a new language into the classroom." Rohan Plunkett, Deputy Head, Akiva Primary School. How does the Story Powered Language Learning Method work? Unlike a Portuguese picture dictionary, bilingual baby books Portuguese english, dual language bilingual Portuguese English children's books, Portuguese learning books for kids, Portuguese english books for kids or other Portuguese language learning book for kids, the Fabulous Lost and Found uses the 'Story-powered Language Learning Method' to teach children Portuguese by tapping into a child's natural abilities. There are three steps: We create an emotionally engaging and funny story for children and adults to enjoy together, just like any of the other Portuguese storybooks for kids. Studies show that social interaction, like enjoying a book together, is critical in language learning. Through the story, we introduce a relatable character who speaks only in the new language. This helps build empathy and a positive attitude towards people who speak different languages. These are both important aspects in laying the foundations for lasting language acquisition in a child's life. As the story in this Portuguese picture book progresses, the child naturally works with the characters to discover the meanings of a wide range of fun new words and phrases. Strategic use of humour ensures that this subconscious learning is rewarded with laughter; the child feels good and the first seeds of a lifelong love of language are sown. Message from the Author Mark Pallis There is a special magic about learning words another language and using them: I truly think it warms the heart. I've learnt jokes or songs in ten languages so far and it's brought me so much joy. Portuguese reading books for kids can be fun. This Portuguese books for baby is first and foremost a really enjoyable story, but it's also my way of helping little learners engage with a new language, empathise with strangers and ultimately build a love of languages. And it happens without them realising. Any parent who has ever tried to smuggle vegetables into pasta sauce will know that you can get a lot of good stuff into things without kids realising. This book is the same! Portuguese language learning for kids can be fun. I want you all to have fun together and enjoy the story. All the learning is a bonus; the icing on the cake (or the extra veg in the sauce!). The idea that after a few reads, kids will be able to go up to a native speaker and tell them in their own language: 'I've lost my hat' fills me with joy. Imagine how proud the child will feel. And imagine how proud you'll feel too! I hope you have as much fun reading this Portuguese English book for kids as I had writing it. Learn Portuguese kindergarten kids! Mark
Download or read book Pantomime written by Karl Toepfer and published by Vosuri Media. This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 1320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers perhaps the most comprehensive history of pantomime ever written. No other book so thoroughly examines the varieties of pantomimic performance from the early Roman Empire, when the term “pantomime” came into use, until the present. After thoroughly examining the complexities and startlingly imaginative performance strategies of Roman pantomime, the author identifies the peculiar political circumstances that revived and shaped pantomime in France and Austria in the eighteenth century, leading to the Pierrot obsession in the nineteenth century. Modernist aesthetics awakened a huge, highly diverse fascination with pantomime. The book explores an extraordinary variety of modernist and postmodern approaches to pantomime in Germany, Austria, France, numerous countries of Eastern Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Chile, England, and The United States. Making use of many performance and historical documents never before included in pantomime histories, the book also discusses pantomime’s messy relation to dance, its peculiar uses of music, its “modernization” through silent film aesthetics, and the extent to which writers, performers, or directors are “authors” of pantomimes. Just as importantly, the book explains why, more than any other performance medium, pantomime allows the spectator to see the body as the agent of narrative action.

Book Synopsis Language Disorders in Bilingual Children and Adults, Third Edition by : Kathryn Kohnert
Download or read book Language Disorders in Bilingual Children and Adults, Third Edition written by Kathryn Kohnert and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language Disorders in Bilingual Children and Adults, Third Edition, provides speech-language pathologists, advanced students in communication disorders programs, and clinical language researchers with information needed to formulate and respond to questions related to effective service delivery to bilingual children and adults with suspected or confirmed language disorders. The bilinguals of interest represent varying levels of first and second language proficiency across the lifespan. That is, bilingualism is not determined here by proficiency in each language, but rather by the individual's experience or need for two languages. In separate chapters, the book synthesizes the literature on bilingual children and adults with typical and atypical language skills. These chapters give the reader a deep understanding of the multiple factors that affect language development and disorders in those who rely on two languages for meaningful interactions. Chapters on assessment and intervention issues and methods are then presented for each population. For children, the text focuses on developmental language disorder but also discusses secondary language disorders (such as autism spectrum disorder) in bilingual populations. For adults, the focus is on aphasia, with additional discussion of dementia, traumatic brain injury, and right hemisphere disorder. Although child and adult, typical and atypical populations are presented separately, all are considered within a unifying Dynamic Interactive Processing perspective and within a new Means-Opportunities-Motives framework for understanding language disorders in bilinguals. This broad theoretical framework emphasizes interactions between social, cognitive, and communicative systems to form the basis for very practical implications related to assessment and intervention. This third edition has been completely updated to reflect the current research on bilingual populations and the best practices for working with them. Studies at the intersection of bilingualism and language disorders have expanded to include additional disorders and new language combinations. The authors synthesize the current literature and translate it for clinical use. New to the Third Edition • Coauthors Kerry Danahy Ebert, PhD, CCC-SLP and Giang Thuy Pham, PhD, CCC-SLP • Updated literature review and references to reflect new research on bilingualism, cultural competence, cognitive advantages and clinical practice with linguistically diverse populations • Case studies on assessment with bilingual children and adults • Additional tables and figures summarizing key information • Available evidence on additional child and adult language disorders in bilinguals • Updated extension activities and resource supplement
