Book excerpt: Who says learning should be interesting and fun? Everyone of course! Yet, geography for some kids is both confusing and well, boring. Think back, you know it's true, but it doesn't have to be that way. As a homeschool parent I sought a more interesting way to teach all the states and capitals. By using the concept that each state, just like people, have a first and last name. Memorizing them that way stuck, and my grandson student is now an adult and knows the states and capitals to this day! The names of each state and capital are written above the outline of the state and each capital has an asterisk next to the word and on the state according to its location. The state's nickname at the bottom of the page and some fun images of what the state is known for are on the opposite page. Memorization comes from repetition, and I believe kids will enjoy reading and learning the names in a fun new way! Read, quiz, learn, repeat. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State capitals are an indelible part of the American psyche, spatial representations of state power and national identity. Learning them by heart is a rite of passage in grade school, a pedagogical exercise that emphasizes the importance of committing place-names to memory. But geographers have yet to analyze state capitals in any depth. In American Capitals, Christian Montès takes us on a well-researched journey across America—from Augusta to Sacramento, Albany to Baton Rouge—shedding light along the way on the historical circumstances that led to their appointment, their success or failure, and their evolution over time. While all state capitals have a number of characteristics in common—as symbols of the state, as embodiments of political power and decision making, as public spaces with private interests—Montès does not interpret them through a single lens, in large part because of the differences in their spatial and historical evolutionary patterns. Some have remained small, while others have evolved into bustling metropolises, and Montès explores the dynamics of change and growth. All but eleven state capitals were established in the nineteenth century, thirty-five before 1861, but, rather astonishingly, only eight of the fifty states have maintained their original capitals. Despite their revered status as the most monumental and historical cities in America, capitals come from surprisingly humble beginnings, often plagued by instability, conflict, hostility, and corruption. Montès reminds us of the period in which they came about, “an era of pioneer and idealized territorial vision,” coupled with a still-evolving American citizenry and democracy.

Book excerpt: State governments, headquartered in their iconic capitol buildings, have been governing continuously--and largely democratically, peacefully, and openly--for more than two centuries, a record difficult to match in the history of civilization. Fifty State Capitols shows how the architecture of state capitols contributes to the success of representative government. The formality, timelessness, and public grandeur of representative government are on public display at every one of America's fifty state capitols. Fifty State Capitols describes the majesty and stateliness of each state capitol's exterior form and selected interior details, in words and photographs, including a brief history of the building.
