Book excerpt: Most of us believe that we will finally feel satisfied and content with our lives when we get the good news we have been waiting for, find a healthy relationship, or achieve one of our personal goals. However, this rarely happens. Good fortune is often followed by negative emotions that overtake us and result in destructive behaviors. "I don't deserve this," "this is too good to be true," or any number of harmful thought patterns prevent us from experiencing the joy and satisfaction we have earned. Sound familiar? This is what New York Times bestselling author Gay Hendricks calls the Upper Limit Problem, a negative emotional reaction that occurs when anything positive enters our lives. The Upper Limit Problem not only prevents happiness, but it actually stops us from achieving our goals. It is the ultimate life roadblock. In The Big Leap, Hendricks reveals a simple yet comprehensive program for overcoming this barrier to happiness and fulfillment, presented in a way that engages both the mind and heart. Working closely with more than one thousand extraordinary achievers in business and the arts—from rock stars to Fortune 500 executives—whose stories are featured in these pages, the book describes the four hidden fears that are at the root of the Upper Limit Problem. The Big Leap delivers a proven method for first identifying which of these four fears prevents us from reaching our personal upper limit, and then breaking through that limitation to achieve what Hendricks refers to as our Zone of Genius. Hendricks provides a clear path for achieving our true potential and attaining not only financial success but also success in love and life.

Book excerpt: Traditionally, company leaders develop a business strategy based on bottom lines and profit margins, then hire an ad agency to back up that strategy with creative advertising. But history shows that some of the most effective branding campaigns are born when companies work with ad agencies to develop a business strategy that has a big, creative idea at its heart-what CEO of Euro RSCG Bob Schmetterer calls the Creative Business Idea. In Leap, Bob Schmetterer shows advertisers how to combine advertising creativity and bottom-line realities to develop winning business strategies and winning ad campaigns. He analyzes some of the most creative business ideas in history, showing how successful advertising and marketing strategies do more than simply communicate the brand-they define it. Advertisers know how to create demand for an existing brand, but Schmetterer argues that the next challenge for advertisers is to help their clients apply creative thinking to their core business strategy before they launch a branding blitz. Leap is about connecting the left brain and the right brain to develop solid business strategies that are also creative, fresh, and exciting. It's about mixing business's cold fixation on numbers with the warm heart of art and creativity to build revolutionary brands. It's about connecting with and listening to the client, understanding the business and the product, tapping into the client's passion for the product, and transmitting that passion to the consumer. It's about what happens when the business makes creativity part of its core strategy-enabling it to move beyond self-imposed boundaries and expand the limits of its reach. With a wealth of examples from Volvo to Purdue, Schmetterer shows ad agencies and managers how to help their clients develop the big, creative idea that will transform their businesses-and perhaps their industries. It's time for companies to make the Leap that synthesizes business and creativity to reap the full rewards of profitable innovation. BOB SCHMETTERER is Chairman and CEO of Euro RSCG Worldwide, a one of the world's top five global advertising and communications agencies with clients such as Intel, Peugeot, Air France, Orange, Abby National, MCI, Danone Group, Reckitt Benckiser, Volvo, and Yahoo!

Book excerpt: World-class rock climber Todd Skinner is also one of today's most sought-after motivational speakers for business audiences. Whenever he describes his history-making sixty-day free climb of the 20,500-foot Trango Tower in the Karakoram Himalayas (shown on the jacket), people are in awe of his stamina, skill, ambition, and determination. They are also eager to apply his lessons in their professional and personal lives. Skinner argues that everyone has a mountain to climb, whether it's meeting your annual sales target or launching a new product or getting your department to improve its teamwork. And he stresses that you should set your goals even higher than you normally would, and constantly look beyond the current summit to the next one. For instance, instead of aiming for 10 percent revenue growth, go after a seemingly impossible 50 percent target, and then think of new ways to get there. In both rock climbing and business, you must define your exact mission, assemble the right team, make the critical transition from preparation to action, have courage when crossing difficult terrain, and weather the storms well. Skinner offers fresh insights into all of these topics and explains principles such as: how you think is more important than what you know pick teammates for what they will do, not what they have already done make decisions in answer to the mountain fall toward the summit see each challenge as part of a bigger picture, your lifelong ascent Beyond the Summit presents fresh and inspiring advice on leadership, teamwork, and decision-making skills, combined with an epic adventure tale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would you like to "change your thinking"?Would you like to "forget your past"? Would you like your horrible night dream to become very nice dreams? Would you like your body pains and suffering to go away? Would you like "luck" come your way? Would you like positive things to happen in mysterious ways in your life more often than not? Then this book is for you. There are two methods given in this book and they will help you to achieve these goals (1) the first method is to control your physical and thinking karma and (2) the second method is a copyright (by me) and it will guide you to "transform your thoughts" from physical-thoughts to non-physical-thoughts (divine/higher-power/God). I did this in 6-9 months. You do it once and then maintain it. When you "transform your thoughts" then you "throw away" your thoughts such that all your thoughts, happy, sad and negative thoughts are thrown away. This way all your thinking goes away. Your mind does not go blank but you replace your mind with non-physical thoughts. Once you have accomplished this then you have "new" thinking without your baggage. You will "forget" your past. At this level, your karma will improve and go positive, and as this happens, your horrible night dreams will become positive. At time moves forward, your body pains will slowly go away. If you get hurt in sports then you will heal faster. This is a very powerful method. As time passes, you may be able to establish communication with divine/higher-power/God and you may begin to receive "bells and whistles" at some point. If this happens then you will be an extremely happy person.

Book excerpt: The Gospel according to Spiritism is one of the five books that make up the Spiritist Codification, a set of teachings transmitted by high order spirits, and organized and commented upon by Allan Kardec. This work contains the essence of the moral teaching of Jesus, and therefore is a refuge where the followers of all religions – and even those who have no religion – may join hands, because it offers a sure itinerary for our inner reform, the objective indicated by Christ as indispensable for achieving our future happiness and inner peace: that achievement which only the full observance of the divine laws can provide to the spirit on its gradual evolutionary path toward God.

In 1800 Degerando wrote these Considerations on the Various Methods to Follow in the Observation of Savage Peoples as a memoir to serve as guidance to the members of the Societe des Observateurs de l'Homme in an impending expedition to Australia. Degerando's originality lies in his recognizing and stating that the observations of previous explorers were casual and superficial. The advice to the members of the expedition listed topics about which observations should be made and how they should be made. First published in 1969.
