Book Synopsis De los recursos naturales a la economía del conocimiento by : David M. De Ferranti
Download or read book De los recursos naturales a la economía del conocimiento written by David M. De Ferranti and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study questions whether, after a decade of remarkable progress in trade reform, Latin America and the Caribbean really integrates into the global market, offering a promising rapid growth, and good jobs for its workers. For despite the incidence of the loosely called "knowledge economy", the concern prevails that most countries' rich natural resources, still are the determining factor for exports. Policy recommendations include fostering openness to trade, market access, and foreign direct investment flows, in addition to building human capital, institutions, and public infrastructure, without disregarding the natural advantages. To this end, policymakers should aim at developing educational systems that provide quality education, focused on lifelong learning, and training activities to build human capital. Emphasis should follow on research and development (R&D) incentives, and innovations systems, arguing that countries should experiment with taxation incentives, and subsidies to promote both private, and public investments in R&D, (dependent on the institutional capacity of governments to enforce tax laws, and monitor the quality of investments). Moreover, evidence in this report, suggests that information, and communications technology (ICT) can reduce coordination costs, enabling an effective industrialization, and market access.

Book Synopsis Understanding the Digital Economy by : Erik Brynjolfsson
Download or read book Understanding the Digital Economy written by Erik Brynjolfsson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2002-01-25 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of electronic commerce, along with changes in information, computing, and communications, is having a profound effect on the United States economy. President Clinton recently directed the National Economic Council, in consultation with executive branch agencies, to analyze the economic implications of the Internet and electronic commerce domestically and internationally, and to consider new types of data collection and research that could be undertaken by public and private organizations. This book contains work presented at a conference held by executive branch agencies in May 1999 at the Department of Commerce. The goals of the conference were to assess current research on the digital economy, to engage the private sector in developing the research that informs investment and policy decisions, and to promote better understanding of the growth and socioeconomic implications of information technology and electronic commerce. Aspects of the digital economy addressed include macroeconomic assessment, organizational change, small business, access, market structure and competition, and employment and the workforce.
Book Synopsis EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector by : Kim Viborg Andersen
Download or read book EDI and Data Networking in the Public Sector written by Kim Viborg Andersen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When researching, teaching or working with information systems in the public sector, one is left with few or often no textbooks that provide useful case studies or surveys on the implementation and effects of integrating information technologies in the organizations' operations. This is surprising since in most first world countries the public sector consumes a substantial part of the gross national product. Even more astonishing is the vast amount of financial and organizational resources that are spent developing and implementing various information systems. We decided to write this book to provide information for those studying information systems at business schools, information and computer departments at collegesl universities, and for those working hands-on with EDI and data networking in public administration. Thus, our primary target groups for this book are professionals, training (MA-courses), computer science, MBA, MP A, and political science. EDI has been seen as a means to wire the various policy areas in the public sector. Those included are not limited strictly to the public organizations, but extend to their trade partners. Also, government has sought ways to stimulate the usage of ED I in the private sector beyond those transactions involving direct communication with the public sector. In this book, we have contributors from eight countries and a total of 14 chapters reporting on issues of importance when developing and implementing EDI, when government wants to stimulate the diffusion of EDI in society, and when organizations want to address the impact of their investments in ED!.

Book Synopsis Do Caribbean Exporters Pay Higher Freight Costs? by : Alexander J. Yeats
Download or read book Do Caribbean Exporters Pay Higher Freight Costs? written by Alexander J. Yeats and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to analyze transportation costs incurred by Caribbean countries on their major export products to determine whether there is evidence of freight rate discrimination against these countries, or whether their transport costs are significantly different from those of other exporters. A key finding is that a distinction must be made between freight rates for air cargo services as opposed to ocean transport. For exports by ocean carriers the empirical evidence is quite different than that for air shipments. This study also finds that Caribbean exporters are more likely to experience adverse transport costs on food and agricultural raw materials than they are on manufactured goods where a relatively high percentage of shipments are by air. The report also suggests the following lines of analysis: how the Caribbean countries might best exploit the major cost advantage they have for products exported by air, why is ocean transport less cost efficient than air freight for Caribbean countries, and why do large adverse transport cost differentials appear to be concentrated in certain product groups like food and agricultural raw materials?
Download or read book EDI in Europe written by Helmut Krcmar and published by John Wiley & Sons, Incorporated. This book was released on 1995-11-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EDI in Europe How It Works in Practice During the last decade, the use of information technology to support the exchange of information has been constantly growing. One of the most important areas of growth has been the application of technology to the exchange of structured information between companies - generally referred to as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). While adoption of EDI is widespread in the US, usage in Europe is reported as scant. This book addresses itself to the European situation and the potential for EDI in Europe. EDI in Europe begins by introducing the basic elements of the concept, and its benefits. It goes on to analyse 14 case studies drawing out the lessons to be learned - all of which gives the reader the opportunity to evaluate their own situation and choose the most suitable approach.
