On a recommandé de faire reproduire à l'écrit, par les élèves, un texte élaboré auparavant à l'oral. Née dans les années 1870-80, cette prescription, caractéristique de l'enseignement primaire jusqu'aux années 1960, est le symbole de la soumission à la parole du maître et d'une relation respectueuse au savoir. 2. Avec le second modèle, on fait appel à l'observationd e la "réalité". on invite l'élève à la fois à une soumission au réel, par un usage systématique des sens, et à la construction d'une vision personnelle deschoses observées. Apparu dans les traités des années 1900, ce modèle domine la conception de la rédaction dans les classes de la sixième à la troisième jusque dans les années 1970. 3. Vers les années 1920, dans l'école primaire, apparaît le discours hérétique de l'instituteur Freinet promouvant le texte libre. Ce discours est étudié dans les textes rédigés par Freinet, en relation avec les engagements politiques et les visées sociales de son auteur. 4. En 1970, le plan de rénovation de l'enseignement du français à l'école élémentaire préconise une démarche "dialectique" de "libération structuration". A partir de là, l'INRP lance une expérimentation, étudiée dans la revue Repères. 5.Un groupe restreint de professeurs du secondaire lance en 1974 la revue Pratiques où sont prescrites des activités rédactionnelles fondées à la fois sur les théories récentes de linguistique textuelle et sur l'esthétique littéraire du Nouveau Roman. La revue, dont les membres acquièrent rapidement un statut universitaire, devient le tremplin de la didactique du français.
